Magic was the reason. Magic seemed to be the bane of his existence.
During his stay in the royal castle of Olinthus, he learned that the King possessed an affinity to a weak, yet rare magic: charm.
The old man at the time managed to ensnare him, keeping him like a canary within the castle confines. The only difference was that he wasn't there to sing, but rather talk continuously.
When Rowan reached the age of 13, the Old King died. The youngster had hoped the succeeding king would be sensible enough to let him leave the castle and perhaps, the country. Olinthus was stable and was ushered into a golden period.
But, the new heir, King Jove, wanted it to flourish, thus further imprisoning Rowan in the castle grounds, then a certain wing of the building and finally a mirror with the use of magic from Empress Juno.
So, to go back to Luken's question...
What did Rowan want to do to Olinthus?
His first thought would be to let the nobility of Olinthus to suffer the same fate as he: trapped with no chance to struggle, deprived of human rights and forcibly doing another's bidding.
Rowan quickly took back the thought, 'I'm better than them.' Even he knew that it was too cruel. Plus, he would not let his dark thoughts overtake him.
Shaking out his depressive state, he puts his focus on the man in front of him who was still waiting for a response. Luken wore no smile on his cold face, yet his sunset red eyes exuded both confidence and assurance, allowing Rowan to further regain his senses.
"Let them panic on their own." Simple and straightforward. No need for any extra work.
Luken raised his eyebrows a bit, "Are you sure you want only that?"
"Yes."
---------------------------------
Days have passed since that conversation and everyone returned to their usual routine, the only difference being the constant letters that demand their "object" back.
Of course, all of those are ignored.
Well, almost all of them.
There was one particular letter that was a bit too noticeable to leave unread. It had the royal stamp and placed in a red envelope, which laid conspicuous on the pile of plain white parchment.
Luken held Rowan's mirror body and the letter so that they could read it together, only for the paper to be crumpled up and thrown onto the floor and Rowan cursing incessantly inwardly. Luckily, they were in the library and no one witnessed the King inelegantly throwing something onto the ground.
The letter was simply worded: "An envoy will arrive at the castle to receive an explanation."
Both Luken and Rowan knew what an Olinthus envoy looked like. Rowan saw them leave the Olinthus castle, while Rowan had to deal with them at the Nelumbo castle.
And what did they both think of the envoy?
Too showy! Too wasteful! Too embarrassing!
Unlike other countries who would send their best negotiators or scholars to act as envoys, Olinthus sends over an entire parade and create unnecessary gossip and hype amongst countries.
This would put Nelumbo in a passive situation where Olinthus was "robbed" by Nelumbo, and is "nicely" asking for it back in a "civil" manner.
Public opinion of the Nelumbo Royal Family would become negative and many foreign countries or political enemies may become a little too interested in the subject of the two countries' dispute. Which might lead to the discovery of Rowan.
Before Luken could call Gale to stall the envoy so Rowan and he could have enough time to strategize on what they could do, Gale came dashing in with a powerful wind spell.
"Bad news: An Olinthus envoy is here." The blond-haired man had an ugly expression and harshly pointed towards the throne room, obviously showing his disdain.
'Olinthus just don't know how to let go...' Rowan sighed to himself and could only hope they would leave after this one meeting.
Though, Rowan knew that his hopes were a bit ridiculous considering the nature of Olinthus' nobility.
