Chapter 55; Mischief

"At every party there are two kinds of people – those who want to go home and those who don't. The trouble is, they are usually married to each other."

– Ann Landers

Shaking my head I padded silently through the dense undergrowth, my feet automatically swiveling past sticks and stones. The softness of my paws muffling my approach. Chris cursed in the distance as a twig snapped under one of the what I assume to be new hunters booted feet, as he had shot his arrow right in to the newbie's foot that had snapped the twig, my whiskers twitched in amusement, wishing that I could laugh heartily at their misfortune. Instead I remained silent as ideas of trickery appeared in a list but we're crossed out one by one. Chris knelt down and helped the poor chap and scolded him as he done so. I kept closer and suddenly my cat lips curled up, maybe a little fright would do. My paw caught a stick and snapped it in half, the sound echoed loudly as deafening silence shrouded the suddenly tensed men. I had moved far from the place which I had stood a mere second ago, using the shadows to create puppets that danced with the flickering light of the moon. The injured newbie gulped as Chris raised his bow slowly. I leaned my head back and amplified a deafening roar that should have been a cat's meow. Once again I was gone from the spot I stood at a moment ago, crouching low on a lowered tree branch above one of the Hunters head's. All weapons were raised, shoulders tensed and fear dancing in their eyes. Chris raised his hand, his eyebrows furrowed in concentration as his eyes wandered around for my location,up,above, below and to all sides. But he completely miss- looked me. The shadows stilled as silence rained once more, the late night birds were unnaturally quiet as they watched the scene that played out before them, animals in curiosity watched in silence, not even a cricket could be heard. My shoulders tense and my hackles raised, I launched on top of the Hunters head. A girl like screech emitted from the depths of his throat as he clawed at his own head. I disappeared once more as all weapons were aimed at the squirming man now on the ground crying for a saviour. Chris frowned.

"What happened?" He asks the man on the ground, still squirming, his eyes watery.

"S-something! Something land-landed on my head! I-it tried...to k-kill me!" The man stuttered out. Chris's eyes twitched.

"It was probably a squirrel. Or a mouse, I don't think something small could kill you." Chris says slowly as if talking to a toddler. I snapped a twig and disappeared again. They fired their weapons this time, wasting amo and arrows. Another horrible stench blew past my nose, it smelled like piss, oh! That cry-baby must've pissed his pants. Blegh! I shuddered and ran pass the hunters, just a black streak in the blinding light of the moon now directly above us. Once again guns went off and arrows were fired. Maybe a larger animal...? Imagining a large wolf like that of Twilight, it's fur pitch black with blue patterns imprinted on to its body. Though it is large it should still be as fast as a vampire and as flexible as allastic. My body grew in size as I ran once again just briefly passing by the Hunters. Sparks flashed as bullets once again missed their target. My feet could still hide any sound I made so it was still worth it. I crawled closer my body crouched low as I growled, the ground shaking softly at the resounding vibration.

"Humans, retreat or die." My feral voice roared through the forest, shaking the hunters, even Chris. They stumbled back upon seeing my height, my size and shape. The hunters with weaker hearts ran like scattered mice the instant I took another step.

"Run! A monster." I scoffed, sometimes humans could be monstrous as well and they call us monsters. Hump! I'm more human then they are for not wanting to harm the innocent! Chris was the only one who stayed.

"You are dealing with higher beings, Hunter, stay out of the forest until the dust has cleared." I say as I backed in to the shadows fading slowly as if mixing with them. Chris narrowed his eyes in confusion but said nothing.
