"Oh. I thought we were taking a break" I replied.
"Yeah, for this."
She was looking up at something. I saw that it was a tree branch that was 1 or 2 feet up from us. Cindy seemed to be considering this branch.
As I was about to ask for clarification, Cindy crouched down a bit and then jumped up. She grabbed on to the branch with both her arms. I was surprised and held on to her but it was difficult since I could barely hold on to her shoulders in the position.
"Wha.. .what are you doing?" I asked shakily. I was again surprised by Cindy's strength. She could actually jump and grab onto a branch while carrying me on her back?
Cindy didn't reply, instead she started pulling herself up. Once she had pulled herself up all the way, she slowly went down. I could see her arms shaking due to the strain. This was obviously not easy for her. But she didn't stop at one. Instead she repeated this two more times before finally letting go of the branch and dropping down.
I was left speechless and didn't even know what I could say to her at this point. But this wasn't the end either. Cindy took a break for a few seconds and then jumped up again. She did another 2 pull ups before she had to drop down again.
Finally she said "You can get down now…."
I quickly got off her back and stood there in daze. I didn't think I could do that even just by myself, let alone while carrying someone else. As I was thinking about this, Cindy turned towards me and said "Your turn"
"Ah? There is no way I could do something like that?"
"I am not saying you have to do this while carrying me. Just try it by yourself." Cindy replied with a smirk.
I nodded my head seriously. I decided to give my all for this.
I got into position under the tree, crouched down a bit and jumped up with all I had. It didn't work and I couldn't get a proper grip on the tree and fell down. I tried again to adjust my jump and was able to grab on to the branch. But I lost the grip in a second and fell down again. This was even harder than I had thought.
I tried a few more times but I could never grip the branch properly. As I was looking at the branch and contemplating what to do, Cindy grabbed my legs and lifted me up.
"Grab the branch now."
I quickly grabbed the branch tightly with both my arms.
"Do you have a firm grip?"
"Yeah…" I grunted in reply.
Cindy slowly let go of me and I kept holding on to the branch. It was still quite hard but I was able to keep my grip on it.
"Now try to pull yourself up."
I tried what she said but I didn't move at all. It seems my arms were quite weak. I was only barely able to hold on to the branch. I had no strength to spare to pull myself up.
"Uh… I don't think I can…." I replied in a voice tight with exertion.
"That's ok. Just keep holding on as long as you can in that case." Cindy replied in a calm voice.
I did as she said but I could not hold on to the branch for more than 15 seconds. Finally I let go, but I didn't drop to the ground. Cindy caught me again and held me up.
"Lets try again."
"O… ok."
It didn't look like I had a choice. Cindy raised me up again after a few seconds and I took hold of the branch again. My fingers were already hurting so I couldn't get a firm grip. Cindy kept holding me but as she saw that I was unable to get a good grip, she finally put me down.
"That was a good first attempt. You should keep trying it and it will increase your strength."
"Thanks. I will keep practicing…"
Cindy nodded and went to check on Mark.
