While walking she found herself in a big market filled with countless little stalls. People sold all kinds of stuff. From small animals to food. From clothing to accessories. She slowly walked while even her mind was empty when suddenly something flashed in the corner of her eye.
She turned her head and saw an old necklace made of blue stones. At old times these stones were extremely popular and expensive, but now there are so many fakes so they became cheap and worthless. She slowly touched the whole set... ring, necklace, hair accessory, bangles...
''Young woman, you have good eyes. This is an old set my grandmother got from her old working place as a dowry. At that time these things were quite pricy, but now not many like this style. My grandchildren almost threw it in the trash and I felt sorry for it. I'd prefer to sell it to someone who will wear it, then to be thrown away. '' A deep sigh came out of her chest when she gazed over the things in front of her.
There were whole rounds of old coins that were almost worthless. Some silver coins, more accessories. A silk handkerchief, a couple of silk fans, a pair of old-style shoes and some clothes.
''My grandmother was just a servant in olden times. So her clothes could be considered common clothes. Nothing special. But the way it looked on her was very pretty. This is the last two sets of clothing that were used and I took them out in hope that someone would consider them, at least as some kind of cultural heritage. I think these things would look pretty on you.''
Liu Mei chuckled. ''So you as well think I would be better off in another timeline? Good. Then how much is it all together?'' Her voice was devoid of any emotion while her eyes became reddish.
The old woman happily jumped and took out an old bag. ''Here I have some underclothes, a hat, shoes for work, more accessories, some more coins, two jade bangles and a ruby set. I will give you all for 5000 RMB.''
Liu Mei just nodded. It was a bunch of money, but why does she care now? She earned some secret stash that she wanted to use in case something happened in the business world her husband was in.
She just paid her the stuff and walked a bit further and saw another set of commoner clothes but a bit prettier. She bought more clothes, some more pretty coins, a couple of red jade bangles and went to the antiquary store to buy more things.
Her resolution grew with every minute. ''You call me old fashioned and stupid. Let's make a whole point then. Shall we?''
When she came back home she found out from the servant that he picked up the children's clothes and went with them to the adventure park. That means they just wanted to avoid her until tomorrow. She sarcastically laughed and entered her room.
''Fei Chen, come here.'' The older woman looked at her ironically. The servant that had not even a bit of respect towards her as the house's lady.
''Yes?'' The way she said that made Liu Mei even more chuckle to her own sorrow.
''Pack all my stuff and throw it into the homeless bin. They are maybe not pretty but still wearable. Do it now. If you dare not to respect my wishes I will kick you out of the house and trust me, even if we are now divorced my husband will listen to my wishes and never arrange another job for you.''
Her cold voice made Fei Chen change her expression as she realized how different her lady was. In her eyes was no feeling and that made her nervous. She nodded and did as she was told.
All Liu Mei's clothes were packed neatly and brought to the clothes bin. The luck was in that moment the bin was emptied and all those clothes were gone. Fei Chen told her about it and she nodded.
''I know. Now pick up all my pictures. Anything that is relatable to me and dump it into the big garbage bin. It will leave in another hour. I will check the rest of the house to see if are there any other things that could be related to me.'' She searched the house and actually, she had only a couple of pictures with her husband, two pictures with the whole family and she chose one. The other she threw away into the garbage bin.
She took out all her jewellery as she knew that no one would like the simple gold and silver accessories she had. She liked tiny filigree arts. Butterflies, tiny flowers, small animals. The accessories all had such things. She put them together with the old bag she got from that old woman and sat down in the living room.
It all felt so familiar but still so distant. She signed in to the inner architecture class and design, where she got her last diploma. So she put it on the wall instead of the family picture and smiled. She knew that not even this would make their mind change, but it made her happy. She was not worthless. Just simple.
That night she slept for last time in her bed, ate for last time the breakfast and then went to turn herself into that what he saw her as...
