"I'll go." He Lanjin's voice was filled with unprecedented determination.
The instructor was obviously surprised. "Think about it again," he said in a very serious voice. "If you go, you might not be able to come back."
"But I'm still alive, right? Everyone says that it's the responsibility of the common man to help when the country is in trouble. Besides, we've been trained. If we can save one person, we can save another." He Lanjin's fingers trembled. Images of the effects of the earthquake appeared in her mind, making her extremely miserable.
He Lanjin would have wanted to go home and pack some of her things, but there was no time. The group of volunteers boarded a plane to and changed trucks in the neighboring city of the earthquake zone. They rushed to the disaster area overnight.
While on their way, the volunteers studied the safe zones and discussed the best way to save more people in less time.
He Lanjin suddenly broke off from the group when she remembered something. She dialed Qiao Hanye's number, but there was no signal.
She composed a short message for him to say that she was fine, but the transmission failed.
Sitting in the truck, the group suddenly heard a loud bang, as if something huge hit the roof of the vehicle. Someone shouted, "Falling rock! The front of the truck car has been smashed. Everyone, get out of the vehicle and start running for cover."
He Lanjin hurriedly put away her phone and got out of the truck. She followed the rest of the volunteers,
While walking, the group saw houses collapsing, felt the earth shaking., and heard faint mournful crying.
"Hurry up, everyone. This place is about to collapse. Run!" The instructor barked his order from the front. He Lanjin quickened her pace but stopped in her tracks when she saw a familiar figure. He Lanjin hesitated for a moment but quickly decided to chase after the person.
A shaking house came into He Lanjin's view. Without warning, a big rock fell on the house and crushed it into the ground with a deafening boom.
"Dad!" A man shouted as he rushed to the house. He Lanjin quickly stepped forward and grabbed his arm, pulling him back forcefully.
"Let go of me. My Dad is still inside," the man growled, his voice filled with tears. He Lanjin was surprised, finally realizing why the person looked familiar. "Zhao Yuyi, is that you?"
She did not expect to meet Zhao Yuyi here. She watched him cry and fall to the ground. He pulled his hair and tried to go inside the house, as if he was deranged. "Dad, dad, come out."
"You can't go in. Calm down," He Lanjin said as she pulled Zhao Yuyi back. He kept struggling as if he had gone mad, with the sole intention of rushing into the fallen house.
The world seemed to be on the verge of cracking. The ground shook as Zhao Yuyi crawled over, digging in the dirt with his bare hands. He cried in pain and despair. "Dad, your son is back. Come out, please."
He Lanjin watched as the entire house collapsed. Her eyes moistened and grew red as she listened to Zhao Yuyi's heart-wrenching cries.
"It's very dangerous here, "He Lanjin sid in a firm voice. "We have to leave." Zhao Yuyi froze on the ground, tears streaming down his ashen face. He looked up at the house and muttered, "Dad..." For the first time, He Lanjin looked directly at the man's face.
He Lanjin was not a spiteful person, but she was naturally disgusted with Zhao Yuyi for being in cahoots with Lu Zifan. However, this scene before her was painting Zhao Yuyi in a totally different light.
"My dad has cancer. He is paralyzed and bedridden; his organs are weak," Zhao Yuyi sobbed. "But I will save him. I have the money now. Everything will be all right."
For some reason, Zhao Yuyi's backpack caught He Lanjin's eye. Hearing Zhao Yuyi's words made He Lanjin think. Could he and Lu Zifan be...
"Your father would definitely want you to stay alive and live for him," He Lanjin said in a low voice. She did not know how to comfort people, but she felt that she needed to say something.
Zhao Yuyi sank to his knees in abject desperation. He Lanjin noticed that something was wrong with the terrain, so she quickly pulled Zhao Yuyi up with all her strength and led him away. Just as they got to an area that seemed safe, the spot they were standing on collapsed into a hole.
