Virtual Training

Chapter 5 — Virtual Training.

SDF Training Facility | 1:40 PM.

Jason walked toward a large building which was located near the academy's main building. He saw many peoples inside and they seemed to be about the same age as him.

He then became curious about the several large cubic rooms that were all lined up in an orderly fashion. It looked strangely futuristic with large screens displayed outside it.

He was amused by those cubic rooms and quickly asked a random dude some questions about this building and also those cubic rooms.

The dude looked at him strangely, but slowly explained toward him in the end. To summarize what the dude said, those cubic rooms were actually virtual training simulation rooms. And this place was called as the SDF Virtual Training Facility where the cadets-in-training could practice their piloting skills and also compete for the weekly rankings.

Jason thanked the dude for explaining things toward him. He then stared at those virtual training rooms with great interest.

It also made him feel nostalgic.

In the past, he was fond of playing a certain virtual simulation game. However, it no longer existed now.

Although Jason wanted to pilot a real Guardian, he knew it was still not the right time yet. He didn't even know how to use and control a Guardian. He knew nothing as of now.

He needed to quickly learn and adapt to the new environment he was suddenly thrown as soon as possible. The SDF Academy and this virtual training room were just stepping stones for that.

Jason was confident about his piloting sense and experiences that were honed sharply by playing a lot in the past. He was sure of improving very quickly in this field. He was confident about surpassing the peoples that were on the weekly rankings.

Jason looked around for an empty virtual training room and soon found one that was empty and clean.

The room soon opened after he pressed his hand on the black screen, revealing what was inside the virtual training room.

It was the standard cockpit style that was commonly seen in anime.

The cockpit was something that also resembled those in modern tanks. There was a central main view screen and two side screens.

The main screen had the full Heads Up Display, target information, and warning notifications.

The secondary screens extend the viewable area, making use of Jason's peripheral vision.

It also have multi-function that can act as communication displays. The cockpit seat was fixed forward and heavily padded.

Jason looked at the control module and found it to be very unfamiliar. He had played with many different types of cockpit before—including the fantasy and technological cockpit style. However, this cockpit only showed some similarities. Many of the stuffs were clearly unfamiliar to him.

Fortunately, Jason found a reliable user manual placed on the storage module. He slowly started reading It and realized something.

This virtual training room used the Type 18 Guardian as its model. And this Type 18 Guardian used a type of system that he didn't really liked that much.

It used an automated system that made it easier for the pilots to handle and control.

It was not that bad, but Jason preferred using manual control that allowed him to control every movements of the machine. There was a fine difference between the two.

Automated system and Manual Control was like the difference between a noob and a pro.

Jason continued reading and gradually memorized the important and essential knowledge needed to know. He wasn't smart in terms of brain, but when it's related to mechas, he was like those natural geniuses.

Furthermore, Jason felt his brain was working much better and efficient than usual, allowing him to remember and digest those knowledge very easily.

He thought this was another effect from his superhuman body that was modified by Mr. Alien.

Jason finished reading the thick user manual and was glad to find something good. At the end, he learned that he could remove most of the automated system, but not completely all of it or else it will break. It was still not a true manual control.

However, Jason was satisfied with that. He didn't wanted to bite more than what he can chew.

Once he became a successful pilot in the future, he would ask for his own Guardian that don't have automated system.

"It's time once again for the former number 1 of the most popular virtual simulation game to shine like a star!" Jason smirked as he finally launched the virtual training program.

The main screen and secondary screens lit up and the surroundings suddenly changed. The virtual training was now starting...

....

Type 18 Virtual Training Room | 3:45 PM.

The results from Jason's first virtual training experience was....

...a complete failure. He did a very horrible job, causing him to feel embarrassed. He quickly died under the countless tendrils of the gigantic Gauna. It was much more terrifying than he thought.

His failed mission didn't even received a grade, but he didn't minded it. He still have rooms for improvement.

Jason was already exhausted from his first virtual training experience that lasted for a hour. However, he chose to play again after resting for a while. His exhaustion was overwhelmed by his enthusiasm about piloting a real Guardian. And since he was a superhuman, his natural endurance was far superior than normal Sidonians.

He would do anything to perfectly master this virtual training. He wanted to quickly become an official pilot and ride a real Guardian. He was just that serious and determined about accomplishing his dream that couldn't be fulfilled in the past.

Jason failed many times inside the virtual training room, but he was slowly improving at a fast rate. He retried the mission many times, causing his eyes to become bloodshot and grew heavy dark circles. He was also sweating profusely. However, his crazy smile wouldn't fade even though he was frustrated inside.

For his final attempt, Jason finally managed to barely complete the mission. However, the virtual training system forcefully shut down after detecting he was already playing for too long now. It wasn't good for his body and mind.

Jason left the virtual training room and stretched his stiff muscles. He saw fewer people inside this building. They must have already left since it was now night before he knew it.

Rumble...

He felt his stomach growing, he was very hungry after his brain consumed a huge amount of nutrients during his time inside the virtual training room. There was also no sunlight inside, so he couldn't photosynthesis.

However, Jason didn't planned on using photosynthesis much as it felt weird. He wanted to eat food like a normal human he was once before.

He then remembered Mother Bear's words and decided to eat at the cafeteria.

...

SDF Dormitory | Mother Bear's Cafeteria | 10:00 PM.

There were no people eating in the cafeteria, making it look very lonely. It was normal since Sidonians would usually just photosynthesis.

However, they still needed to intake some nutrients that only came from foods and also drink water. Photosynthesis only slowed down their hunger since eating sunlight wasn't enough to sustain the billions of cells inside their body. It also lacked some of the nutrients that the body needed to live.

Jason looked around the cafeteria, seeing many empty tables and seats. It looked dark here.

Just before his sight, there was a bar and stools below it. Mother Bear was behind the bar, wiping some plates using a white towel.

Mother Bear noticed him and smiled lightly.

"Hey, you came here sooner than I thought."

Jason shrugged his shoulders, "I'm interested after all. I'm also feeling hungry..."

"Oh, do you perhaps don't have photosynthesis?"

"I have one, but its not like I'm a plant. A human gourmet like me definitely needs to taste delicious foods and water to live happily."

"Haha, I see, I see! Then what do you want to order? Want to order my most proud work, the ramen?"

"Uhh..." Jason pondered for a moment before smirking teasingly. "No, not today. I just want to eat rice and chicken."

Mother Bear was disappointed, but soon nodded her head. "Sure, I'll serve it to you soon."

She then went to the kitchen located at the back and several minutes later, she came out while holding a plate.

She placed it on Jason's table and said, "Here's your order. Enjoy eating it."

"Sure, thank you." Jason said while holding a pair of wooden chopstick. He took a deep breath, the smell of the crispy fried chicken entering his nose. It smelled delicious.

He took a bite at the fried chicken, a satisfying crunching sound entering his ears as the fried skin crumpled inside his mouth. He began slowly chewing at the chicken's juicy meat and crispy skin. He didn't chew quickly, but rather slowly, appreciating its flavourful taste.

"Hmm... It's very delicious," Jason praised her as he continued eating slowly.

"I see, I'm glad that you liked it."

Mother Bear was satisfied upon hearing Jason's compliment.

Jason soon finished eating and he quickly paid for it. He had some money that was given to him as an allowance for him to use in his everyday life.

"See you," Jason said goodbye and returned back to his room. He wanted to rest and sleep now. He was exhausted. And tomorrow, he still needed to attend a lecture and even the ranking session in the future.

He wanted to perform very well and surpass everyone at the SDF Academy. Both in military academics and pilot ranking. He wanted to stand out and appear special. By doing so, he could attract the commander's attention again. This way, he can be quickly promoted and become an official pilot. He wanted to quickly ride a Guardian and didn't wanted to spend more time on the SDF Academy.

Jason was growing impatient and worried as time passed. He was in a hurry since he knew that his lifespan was running short. He didn't know how much time was left for him. He needed to absorb a Gauna's energy core as soon as possible to extend his lifespan.

Mr. Alien's words were bugging Jason's mind.
