Chapter 10 — Mission.
Jason Star's Daily Log.
Sidonia | Day 63.
There was a special occasion that started today.
It was the Gravity Festival that was unique in Sidonia's culture.
The entire residential area was covered with various spectacular decorations and bright colourful lights.
A warm and joyful festive atmosphere wrapped around Sidonia.
Jason went to watch the competition that was always held during the Gravity Festival. He was accompanied long with the Akai Squad, except for Akai who was busy participating at the competition.
They cheered loudly for him to achieve victory and in the end, as they expected from the very start Akai won the competition after managing to defeat Kunato Norio.
Jason was not that surprised with the result of the competition as Akai was considered the best pilot of the one hundred period of peace.
He just happily congratulated Akai for his victory.
However, Akai commented that the results might have been different if he had joined the competition.
Jason just smiled lightly and didn't replied to him.
He actually didn't know who was better between them in terms of their piloting skills.
Nonetheless, that question was something that he didn't needed to know. It was just better for someone as skilled as Akai to exist and protect Sidonia along with Jason.
Jason said his goodbye toward the Akai Squad and wandered around the residential area.
He was already somehow familiar with the place and felt he was now a true resident of Sidonia.
Jason tried out many kinds of japanese foods along the way without ever feeling completely full as his metabolism was extremely fast at digesting all of what he ate.
While he was strolling around and enjoying the festival, he suddenly heard a commotion happening in front of him.
He became curious and walked toward the commotion where a large crowds were already gathered.
Jason then saw Kunato pounding his fist violently toward a black-haired boy's face.
Behind the boy, Izana Shinatose was sprawled over the ground, a stick stabbing deep in their thigh.
Jason observed the situation calmly and then decided to step forward to calm the situation down.
It was his job as pilot of Sidonia, and he would earn some good reputations for helping the helpless boy from Kunato Norio.
And besides, he didn't like Kunato Norio that much.
Jason had always felt Kunato's looking at him whenever they were in the same location.
It was like an obsession. A frightful one at that since the gaze he could feel was filled with hostility and anger.
It was now the proper time to warn Kunato to not look for trouble with him.
Jason quietly approached them, and before Kunato could send another punch toward the boy, he suddenly felt something grabbing his wrist tightly.
He poured more power into his hand, but he still couldn't move escape from the monster-like grip strength.
"Let go of my hand, you inferior human!" Kunato roared in anger and quickly swung his other free fist toward the person behind him.
However, he suddenly saw his world flipping upside down.
Under the various surprised and astonished eyes of the crowd, Jason grappled and locked Kunato down on the ground with his hands.
"Release me, you inferior human! Don't you know me?" Kunato roared once again, but then froze after seeing a familiar face.
It was Jason!
The only person he felt inferior and humiliated!
Jason's black and crimson eyes glared down at him coldly.
"You keep saying about inferior human and that at me, but what are you then? As far as I know, you're just a second place fool who can't even hope to surpass my achievement at the academy. If I'm an inferior human, does that makes you a brainless sub-species monkey? How laughable, I'm only trying to hold you down in order to not cause more problems that could affect the reputation of the SDF Academy."
As Jason was speaking, Kunato's companion who was a woman tried to sneak attack on him, but he simply sweep his foot over her legs, causing her to lost balance and fall down, her head hitting the ground, completely knocking her out.
"...." Kunato went silent after seeing her failing the sneak attack.
He grunted before apologizing toward Jason, Izana, and the boy he beat up very badly while clenching his teeth hardly.
He then left the area while carrying the woman who seemed to be his assistant.
Jason started clapping his palms together to get rid of the dust and fine particles.
He was about to leave when he suddenly heard Izana thanking him for his help. The boy also did the same.
Jason simply nodded and explained it was not a problem. He then quickly went away to leave.
The bruised boy, Nagate, asked something toward Izana.
"Do you know who that man is?"
"Oh right, you were still not present at that time and still living underground. That guy is Jason Star and he didn't originated from Sidonia. However, he doesn't remember much because he have amnesia after waking up from his frozen hibernation. He was also once my classmate, but he had already graduated in advance and became an official Guardian Pilot."
"And for your information, Jason graduated in advance because he performed so well that it almost seems unbelievable. He perfectly excelled at the academics and obtain the highest possible scores at the pilot ranking."
Izana spoke so enthusiastically about Jason with excited eyes.
A fan was a perfect term.
Izana spoe
"Oh, that's amazing...!"
Nagate was shocked hearing all of that. It indeed sounded unbelievable, but it seemed to be the truth.
He didn't expected Jason to be that famous and good back then at the academy.
Nagate then made an oath become like Jason and even surpass him someday.

Guardian Hangar Site | Day 66.
The Gravity Festival have ended and things soon returned to normal.
Jason recently received a new mission that he needed to accomplish perfectly. It was to lead trainees on their first mission campaign and the mission was about mining resources from a large asteroid.
He accepted the mission.
Jason quickly sortied out and soon arrived before Rokurome.
"Hey buddy. It's time to wake up and get into some action once again."
He smiled lightly and immediately went to the rope lift to reach the cockpit.
"Jason, good luck on your mission," Sasaki said while looking at him with crossed arms.
Sasaki was the one who made Jason's Rokurome. She was also responsible for the repair works and maintenance of Guardians.
Jason nodded at her words and hurriedly boarded the cockpit.
Soon, Rokurome's visored face shone with crimson light and it's Higgs Particle Reactor roared into life.
"Open Rokurome's hangar."
"Sure thing," Sasaki replied and then pushed a button on her tablet.
Then suddenly, the huge lifting platform that Rokurome was standing on shook violently and started moving down to enter the launching tunnel.
Rokurome grabbed on the launching lever that was located at the side.
"Rokurome...." Jason took a deep breath as his eyes suddenly became sharp and pushed the control handle forward, "....heading out!"
Rokurome accelerated through the long and wide dark tunnel, quickly exiting out of the gate circle.
He finally reached the space that looked an endless sea of stars.
Jason then saw the main screen of Rokurome zooming toward his side and he saw the Guardians that the trainees piloted.
A total of 8 Guardians were present.
The other 7 were the Type 18 Guardian, but Jason was surprised to see The Type 17 White Moon Variant, Tsugomori along with them.
And normally, the officers at the command bridge would order them in this mission, but they handed the control toward Jason.
They wanted to see if he had the ability to command others and have the potential to become a Squad Leader.
Jason saw through their plans and planned to perfectly complete this mission as they wished themselves.
He opened a communication channel toward all the trainees.
He then commanded them—
"Jason over to all units, quickly assemble into a nine palm formation and stay vigilant. From now on, we will begin the Ice Mining Mission to gather vital resources. This is a real dangerous mission and not some training campaign, you must absolutely heed all my command and not do things according to your own thoughts."
""""Roger!""""
Jason heard several people replying to him and found them all very familiar.
The squad two was lead by Hoshijiro, the second ranker of the SDF Academy. Her squad mates were the three Honoka Sisters—En, Ren, and Hou.
The Squad One was lead by Kunato, the first ranker of SDF Academy. His squad mates were Izana Shinatose, Yamano Eiko, and an unfamiliar boy.
They were Jason's classmates before, except for the unfamiliar boy piloting Tsugomori.
Instead of separating the two squads, Jason preferred for them to stick together and form the nine palm formation until they reach their destination.
They could quickly reach the asteroid this way while also using less energy and not too stressful for the trainees since they were in one group.
It was all about efficiency.
All of them quickly formed into a large circle on space while holding each others palm, causing their travelling speed to reach the fraction of light.
They quickly traversed through the endless wave, leaving a trail of blue particles behind them.
After a minute, they soon reached the large asteroid and quickly decoupled from the formation.
"Jason over to all units, slowly land down and don't let your guards down yet."
"""Roger!"""""
All of them landed on the surface of the asteroid which was frozen in ice and began inspecting around.
"Kunato over to all units, we found nothing at our side."
"Hoshijiro over to all units, there's also nothing to be found at our side."
"I understand, then let's quickly start the harvest of the ices," Jason commanded, but then suddenly felt some waves of anxiousness overflowing his heart.
He didn't know why he was feeling like this.
Cold sweats trickled down his forehead as time seemed to slow down before him.
Jason looked everywhere, performing a detailed scan of his environment, but couldn't find anything.
Strange...
He then turned to look at the underground when a piercing pain started assaulting his crimson eye.
He groaned slightly before seeing something underground.
He then heard—
< A threat has been found. >
Within Jason's vision, a large red outline of an abomination was moving around the underground.
His breathings stopped for a moment, his hands that wrapped around the controls becoming tighter.
His heart began to rapidly beat; not knowing whether he was afraid or excited.
But—
"Jason over to all units, I take my previous command back. I now immediately order all of you to retreat as far away as possible."
The trainees were confused at his sudden change of command, but didn't dared to refute him.
The officers at the command bridge were also all confused, not knowing why he made them retreat so suddenly.
The commander was amongst them.
"Pilot Jason, why did you ordered for a sudden retreat?" Kobayashi calmly asked after opening a communication channel with Jason.
"...." Jason didn't replied and remained completely silent.
"Answer my question, Pilot Jason! Are you abandoning your mission?"
Jason still ignored her and looked at the retreating trainees. After confirming they were faraway now, he made his move.
"Sure..."
He muttered, aiming his rifle toward the surface of the asteroid and then pressed the trigger.
"I'll show you."
"And I will never abandon a mission. Not even my comrades nor humanity."
Bang!
The gun fired with a loud bang and a bullet hit the ground, causing fine cracks to slowly spread.
"Watch carefully and see for yourself."
As his voice drifted—
Swooosh!
Swoosh!
Everyone widened their eyes, looking completely shocked. The surface made out of ice completely bursted apart and several dozens of red tendrils pierced toward the air fiercely.
From within the shattered and broken rubbles of ice—a gigantic crimson abomination revealed itself.
It was a Gauna!
The command room was alarmed seeing it and then wondered how Jason knew that there was a Gauna lurking underground?
Even Sidonia couldn't detect its presence even after using various kinds of sensors.
The Gauna's attention was completely focused at Jason, its several large placenta arms piercing toward him.
Jason just stared at the Gauna, a cold sneer forming in face.
O' how long had he waited for this moment to come.
He then made his move, Rokurome charging furiously toward the Gauna—
To be continued.
