"First of all," he starts, " I am not a perv! Second Tom sounds like a name for a grandpa. Listen I did happen to glance up but most of my view was obstructed. Once I realized you were naked my eyes did not wander to the window again. I was too busy trying to figure out what that guy watching you was doing." He finished firmly but his ears were red rethinking the incident. He was sincere. I knew I was safe with him. I wasn't afraid of spending time with someone if it was him, for once.
"Fair enough," I said uncovering my face, "So Tom, your dad likes to meddle in your dating life?"
"Ugh, don't start, he only wanted me spend time with you because he's dating your mom. In theory we are gonna be brother and sister," He stated,
"From the look on your face I can tell you didn't know. They started dating four months ago." He smiled awkwardly at me. He nervously put his hand behind his head and again that blazing tattoo showed.
"Ugh that woman. It doesn't really surprise me that she started dating. She could have told me." I rolled my eyes, knowing my mom, she probably thought I would be upset. She was a really wonderful mom, who always put me first. I loved her dearly even though she enjoyed meddling. I know she did it because she cared for me.
"If I had known it was a secret I wouldn't have said anything. I just recently found out. When my dad mentioned getting to know you because you'd be around for awhile, I put two and two together."
"So what your saying is that you've heard about me?" I probed, wanting to know what he knew about me.
"In passing, yes. I knew you're a firefighter, that you're 23, and your name is Aurora." He grinned, knowing that he had more information on me. He definitely skimmed over that earlier and acted like he had no information about me.
"Well this is totally unfair. Tom, you're gonna need to give me some more information than you do 'something like that'." I pushed.
"Don't wanna. Stop calling me Tom, pick something else." He answered.
"Aren't we supposed to get to know each other," I prodded again. Knowing that he would pull away. Now as we ate I could get a food look at his face. He was handsome. He had large blue eyes that looked like marbles when the light danced on them. His face had a strong jaw line and a square cleft chin. A small scar sat just above his right eyebrow. He was muscular but not over powering. His thick shoulders and hands were definitely that of a firefighter. Overall he was very attractive. If he looked anything like his dad I could see why my mom wanted to date his father.
"You're staring," he chuckled, " If you're not careful I'm gonna think you got the hots for me." As he finished I snapped back to reality. I cannot ogle this man.
"Tom, your face is one only a mother could love." I said without thinking. Obviously his mother had passed away and I put my foot in my mouth, "I...I'm sorry, I said it without thinking."
" Wow way to make it heavy," he snorted, " How long have you worked for the city?"
"You know usually there's a give and take when you ask questions. I'm starting to get frustrated here."
"Answer it or don't. I don't really care. We could eat in silence. But I think you're the type that hates silence." Ugh he's got a point. I really hate silence. I was also dying with curiosity about him. He wouldn't give me any information.
"Fine, I started three weeks ago. I've been volunteering at another city since I was 18 and got certified through them. My father was a fire marshal for the city and I wanted to follow in his footsteps I guess."
" Alright at this rate I'm not gonna have anything to ask. You better hurry and finish your food before it gets real awkward," he laughed, "So what happened to your dad?"
"Now look who's getting heavy."
"Alright fair enough. You finished? I will be right back." He picked up my tray for me and headed to the bathroom.
What is it about this guy. He won't give me anything. Ugh, why do I keep giving him info anyway! I sighed loudly and sat back in my chair.
"Hey babe, you're a little over dressed for a burger joint. You sighing because you're date is too dull?" A coffee skinned man sat down in Tom's seat. He had a aura about him that was dangerous. His eyes looked fearsome deep within their black iris. He wore an earrings on his ears.
"Yo Quintus, you planning to take that bitch tonight," his friend called. This guy had a white crackhead look about him. His saggy brown hair hung to his shoulders. He had several piercing in his face that stuck out awkwardly. His skin drooped heavily from his too thin face. He wore baggy clothes that were tattered and beaten.
"Chase, shut the fuck up man. She's on a date. I might just need to make her disappear while her dates in the bathroom. She'd look good as a side piece. You know Renne is back in town." Ugh why is it that I always attract scuzzy people. I try not to get into fights because I'm a public servant but this shit is annoying. Fucking Tom. These people were just fucking targeting me and waiting. Sometimes being a woman was just too irritating.
"Fuck off will you," I pushed.
"Oh bitch got a mouth on her don't she. Can't say I don't like that though. Maybe you might have some fight in you too." His smile turned dirty as his eyes leered at my body. Then suddenly Tom was standing over him, having just laid him flat on his ass. Tom grabs my hand and we run. A few of the guys friends chase after us.
"How many fucking times and I gonna have to save your ass tonight, Red!"
