Chapter 98: The War on the Undead(1)

Loud groans and shrieks echoed throughout the night sky of Skysea City as hordes of pale-skinned zombies went ape shit in the streets: moving crazily like a tsunami of rotten flesh that they are towards defense line of 5x5 made of five purple Mechas with rows of other purple and yellow Mechas behind them with the very last being five imposing black Mechas.

Although Soul Mechas below the black tier are considered to be useless at the current, but it was only due to the soul EMP bomb devices in the hands of evil soul masters. So they are still considered to be useful in a battle against the undead.

"Brothers! Hold your ground!" Wei Lu ordered his team through radio, his eyes showing fierce determination as he prepared to channel his control of his black Mecha, which is stationed at the middle at the five black Mecha line at the back, to exterminate the undead rushing towards them. "Ready your soul laser beams and soul missiles. We cannot let anyone of them into the Skysea City's Federation's public shelter!"

"Yes, sir!" His subordinates responded firmly through the radio. A wave of soul power surged out of their Mecha as they activated their defensive and offensive tech equipped in their Mechas.

The wave of undead remain unperturbed by the fierce fluctuations of soul power emitting from the group of Mechas, that could rival a Soul Douluo, in front of them and continued on sprinting and running towards them in a frantic manner like that of starved rabid animals.

There were thousands of them, all with the intent to bite and spread more of their kind.

They were just 30 meters away from crashing towards them and closing in fast. At this rate, it would only take about 2 minutes until the inevitable clash of metal and flesh would begin.

Cold sweat slowly dripped down Wei Lu's cheek as he watches the horde of undead closing in to him and his squad with bated breath. Though, he wasn't the only one either. Every Mecha Pilots besides and behind him were waiting with anxiety and nervousness.

Everyone quickly tried to calm their nerves, they were after all, special services of Skysea City's Federation.

They were part of a special services squad that served directly under the Federation, which is wholely separate from both the military army and the police, with the sole duty to protect the civilians when a city level danger was happening.

They were the elite of the elite. Adopted or recruited secretly by the government. This special service is an organization filled with only five squads, with a total of 130 members. It had a small amount of members compared to other organizations out there but it was also a great benefit for the Skysea City's government because they can easily fund their training and the resources needed to create their Mechas, which are considered to be the most money costing technology in the entire world.

For years, decades, they've been keeping quiet and keeping up with their training, hoping one day that they can fulfill the purpose that they'd been waiting for, for almost their entire lifetime.

Yet, even with all the years of training they'd undergone, the technology that they have and the hardass mentality that they developed, they weren't prepared in dealing with this sort of situation.

I mean, zombies? Who would have prepared for that?! Though in retrospect, this is a world of where people awakens a part of their soul to materialized in the real world as some strange tool, animal or a part of their body. And there are evil soul masters known for resurrecting people as undead creatures for thousands of years now...

Yeah. They really should have thought that this situation would happen.

Wie Lu shook his head to shake such thoughts out of his mind and focused once more at the current situation at hand.

Him and his squad, and the others, were ordered to defend the public shelter by positioning themselves in the streets that would have the undead run into the building where the shelter is at.

There were three road streets that was connected to the public shelter, called: Rabbit, Chu and River streets. Wei Lu and his squad had stationed themselves at the Rabbit street while two other squads took the other two streets while the remaining two of the five squads are to stationed back at the public shelter; as the last line of defense to ensure that no undead or evil soul master were to enter it.

10 meters. The zombies had crossed over that distance.

"FIRE!" Wei Lu yelled out his order to his subordinates, setting both of his large soul cannons, equipped on top of his Mecha's shoulders, to slightly tilt up and immediately fired out several small soul missiles at the undead, causing small explosions to explode on impact. Flesh and blood scattered everywhere.

"FIRE!"

His subordinates soon followed his order after he did the first shot, sending out their own brand of soul missiles and soul lasers to exterminate the zombies.

Lights coming out of the Mechas illuminated the Rabbit street with showers of flesh and blood everywhere: it was carnage as it annihilated hundreds of undead in a single volley of attack.

It continued on for thirty straight minutes before the situation started to change.

The zombies continued on crying out in a frenzy and slowly; as beams and missiles destroyed them, they were closing in on Wie Lu's forefront squad members.

"Fuck! They're closing in! Men, be ready to engage in close combat but make sure they don't go much further: stomp them to paste or kick them!" Wie Lu ordered as he tried to keep his composure at the fact that zombies had reached his squad.

The current situation of a zombie invasion wouldn't have been so stressful and terrifying if it weren't for the fact that these zombies weren't of the normal kind.

The ones that shuffles and walks around like a drunk person? As well as being weak as hell? Nope. Theses zombies were of the opposite.

One zombie managed to passed through the almost endless barrage of beams and missiles and leap up towards one of the purple Mecha's left leg. The pilot of the Mecha quickly notices the zombie and immediately controlled it to use its leg to kick away the leaping zombie away.

But as soon as the kick connected with the zombie, sending it flying towards the sky, a red flash began to appear at the corner of the pilot's screen that reads: warning, the left leg has received 50%!

From a bird's point of view, on the purple Mecha's left leg, that kicked away the zombie, had its metallic shin slightly dented with web cracks spread around it.

The Mecha pilot swallowed in horror. He was told about the abnormality of the zombies but this was the first time that he personally saw it.

The normal humans turned zombies had acquired superhuman strength at the level of possibly a power assault system Soul King and an increased speed at the level of a agility system Soul Ancestor, but only when the infected remained infected within half an hour.

This was the reason why the situation had quickly escalated to this level, no normal humans or average soul masters could stand a chance against monsters like them.

As for those soul masters that got turned into zombies...

There was a reason why there were so few protecting the public shelter. It was because most of the city's military force, as well as Spirit Pagoda and Tang Sect, are out fighting the more dangerous type of the undead and the evil soul masters as well.

The ghouls. The second tier of undead that soul masters who are infected are called.

They are an incredibly dangerous type of undead, due to how their cultivation is increased by either an entire realm or half, their physical strength doubled, and most frighteningly of all, is that their intelligence and use of martial soul/s still remains.

Zombies are terrifying enough, but zombie soul masters that can still effectively use their martial soul/s? All it takes is a Soul Douluo or Titled Douluo getting infected by them for the entire city to be reduced to rubble and infecting the remaining population.

Thankfully there wasn't any Soul or Titled Douluo Ghouls. The most powerful ghoul that they spotted was currently a Soul Sage, now with the strength of a Soul Douluo or possibly even a Titled Douluo if it can still use its battle armor, that most of the city's military force(Spirit Pagoda and Tang Sect as well) went to destroy along with a horde of about a hundred thousand zombies and ghouls at the Skysea Alliance Stadium.

Wei Lu, his squad and the rest of his organization's job was to hold off any undead into coming anywhere near the public shelter while also finding any survivors to help take back into the shelter. Sadly, with the way things are in the streets, finding any survivors is impossible.

Not only did they sealed off the streets, they also sealed all entrances of the buildings around them so no stray undead could try and wiggle their way through.

Wei Lu could only pray that any remaining survivors in the city would remain in their homes and barricaded themselves until they arrive to help them.

Time passes by and unknowingly several had already passed and it was only an hour away from dawn.

Sounds of explosions and lasers destroying the zombies was still heard as Wei Lu and his squad continued on guarding the Rabbit street against the unrelenting and almost endless wave of undead with great iron-willed determination.

Despite their soul power battery increasingly low, how cramped their arms and legs from constantly moving their Mechas, or how they still haven't received any response from their superiors about the current situation and where the hell reinforcement was, they stubbornly continued on defending their spot.

The only solace that they have is that their other comrades was still fighting on, defending their respective streets, meaning that the public shelter was still safe.

Wei Lu clenched his fists tight, hoping that the horde of undead rushing towards them would momentarily stopped so they can change with shifts with the other squad defending the public shelter so they can rest, charge up their Mechas, and resupply themselves with new ammunition.

He knew that the current situation was bad. This was the problem fighting with an undead army: they don't get exhausted; they don't need to sleep, drink, piss, or charge up their robots and resupply their ammunition!

Wei Lu was confident that he and his men could fight on for days without any sleep but the issues remain in their Mechas. The constant barrage of attacks on the undead horde was exhausting both its energy and ammo at an alarming rate!

Wei Lu calculated, with the help of his Mecha soul technology screen, that their Mechas would last until three more hours with all of their ammunition and soul power battery completely exhausted.

Unfortunately, the two squads that remained guarding the public shelter were all yellow Mechas. They couldn't help keep any of the streets by themselves. All Wei Lu and the other commanders that guarded the other streets could do were switch out with their yellow Mechas and other Mechas who received critical damages. It could only delay the inevitable however.

Their situation was getting worse as the time passes, more so when the unexpected happened.

Bang!

A gigantic explosion exploded at the front of Wei Lu's squad, taking out several of his squad mates in an instant.

"What the fuck was that?!" Wei Lu yelled out through his squad's radio channel in disbelief as smoke and ash covered his soul camera. What the hell just happened? At first, everything was going normally when a sudden explosion exploded right in front of him. Thankfully, with how much their Mechas weigh, they stayed still in their respective positions.

"W-we don't know, sir!" One of his vice commander's stuttered in reply.

"The smoke is obstructing our view too much sir!"

Wei Lu almost yelled at the dumbass who said that with, 'I see that, captain obvious!' but gritted his teeth and focused more on the situation.

He added his night vision cameras with heat signature and x-ray, only to find no life and multiple scattered skeletons heading towards them.

'Shit!' Wei Lu readied his cannons to fire. He wanted to figure out how many of them had survived.

He swiped his hand around his soul screen in front of him to display the casualties of his squad. When he saw how many he lost, all the color on his face quickly drained.

Ten out of twenty four of his men, had died in that single explosion.

How?! Although the pilots were using yellow and purple Mechas, which couldn't be compared to his and his vice commanders' blacks Mechas, they should have been able to tank an explosion like that! Especially the purple Mechas! What the heck's going on?!

As the smoke cleared, Wei Lu's eyes widened to see the reason as to why and how most of his team had died.

"No..."

Standing in the middle of scattered heaps of metal and other debris, was a lone suited figure with a deep brown suit of armor on him/her that obscured his/her identity. But judging by the figure of his armor, it was a he. But the most eye catching part about him was large battle axe resting on his right shoulder and the 'belt' wrapped around his waist.

The belt had several severed heads attached to it, blood still leaking out their necks.

Six soul rings appeared beneath his feet, two yellow, three purple and one black. It was a Soul Emperor Ghoul with a Battle Armor!

The scene in front of him was like something straight out of a horror movie. Wei Lu almost screamed in fear when he saw those decapitated heads hanging that person's waist. Although he wanted to curl himself into a ball and bawl out his eyes out, mourning for his fallen comrades and witnessing something that no human should ever see, he tried to calm himself down to try and calm his now scared squad as well.

"Ghoul in sight! Men! Get yourselves together! I know you're scared, I am too, but for the sake of our city's civilians, for our loved ones who have died and who are still alive, we must fight back! Don't stand around like little ducklings! Fight! Fight for our people's survival!" Wei Lu screamed like his life depended on it, his five soul rings appeared beneath him, and immediately fired off his soul cannons, guns, and missiles on the ghoul. The attacks coming out of his Mecha seemed to be more powerful than before.

His comrades snapped out of their dazed state and quickly followed after their leader, screaming out as they launched their own volley of attacks of the ghoul and the wave of zombies still rushing towards them.

The ghoul let out a rasped breath and lifted his heavy battle axe, its edge was as long as an arm and big as an adult human torso, with its handle being two meters tall, diagonally over his head. One of his purple soul rings lit up, wisps of purple light surrounded his battle axe like a tornado with arcs of wind lashing around.

The ghoul's eyes glowed ominously red under its helmet and muttered with a raspy, rough tone of voice.

"Kill... Eat... Kill!"

The ghoul roared, which followed by the rest of the zombies behind him, and several explosions ensued as the war of the living and undead continued on.
