The next day morning Myra was called to his Lord's study. She anxiously tapped the door and entered when she heard a deep male voice saying, "Come in".
Theodore was reading something. He was sitting on the sofa, with both his extended legs propped up on the coffee table, crossed over his ankle. His black hair was all tousled up, two of his shirt buttons were left open and his sleeves were rolled up.
Myra couldn't help staring at him. He looked like a handsome devil sitting there reading so calmly. The morning sunlight beamed all over him through the windows behind. The word gorgeous didn't even come close to describing the Arcardian Lord.
He looked up at Myra and motioned her to sit on the empty seat across him. Myra obediently sat down waiting for the Lord to say something.
Theodore placed the file he had been skimming through on the table and put both his legs down to sit up properly.
"My Lord, did you have something to talk to me about?", Myra asked.
"Yes" replied Theo staring directly into to her eyes with a serious expression, "I have found a new job for you".
"Really?", Myra shifted in her seat excitedly.
Theodore nodded, "It is a job that pays you well and is quiet safe".
"Where is it, milord?"
"You will be working for the Swanson's starting from tomorrow", Theodore declared, carefully analysing her reaction.
Myra took sometime to process the information. She didn't know whether to get excited or to feel nervous about it. She was already familiar with Lady Florence and Mr. Swanson. Both of them were kind and friendly people. Myra had no doubt that she would get adjusted to the work there easily in no time.
But at the same time, the episode where she was attacked by the muggers on her way to the Swanson's household came rushing into her mind.
"Don't worry, you will not be allowed to go anywhere alone" stated the Lord, as if sensing where her thoughts were headed.
"And what would be the job description?", Myra inquired.
"Just the usual household works such as cleaning, cooking, gardening or something like that" Theodore answered with a shrug and leaned back. "hope you can manage that?"
Myra nodded her head with enthusiasm, "Yes, milord".
Theo had no doubt that she would be able to do any kind of daily chores without any problem. He had even instructed Alvin to let her perform a few easy tasks around the mansion. So as to test her working skills and to keep her mind occupied at the same time.
"Devon will be heading over to meet Leonard sometime in the noon today and you will be accompanying him", Amyra heard the Lord say.
She digested everything quietly for a while and then lifted her head up to beam at Theodore.
"Thank you, My Lord". Amyra was truly grateful towards the Lord for everything he had done to her soo far. If not for the him, she would probably be rotting somewhere severely abused and left without food or shelter.
Theodore stared at her blankly, observing her. He had originally considered letting her work in his mansion itself. Compared to the Swanson's, the Warburton mansion was the safest to live in, but then he felt it would be difficult for her to adjust working for him.
Most of his workers, had treated Myra like a Lady this past week and now if he were to demote her to the position of a maid, there would have been high chances of Myra being subjected to bullying among the servants.
And if she were to stay with him in his mansion for a long time as his guest, it would only end up arousing unwanted curiosity among certain people which would only turn out to be dangerous for her.
Keeping all these facts in mind, Theodore had decided to send Myra away to his cousin's house, as a mere maid where he knew that she would be safe, away from the eyes of unwanted people for the time being.
Theodore gave a curt nod and Myra stood up from her seat and curtsied at him, before turning to leave.
"Amyra" Theo, called out and that had her stop and turn around again. She saw the Lord getting up from his seat.
"One more thing", he added sternly, "you will have to portray yourself as a human while you are working there".
Myra blinked, with a bewildered look on her face.
"Not even a single soul there should get to know that you are a pseudoborn and not a human. Not even the swansons".
It was a strange demand.
wait a minute... how did his Lord know that I am not a human? She didn't remember mentioning this to anyone here.
Myra didn't know why the Lord had asked to hide her identity, but she didn't question him further. There must be a reason, she thought before nodding her head.
A smile broke out on Theodore's face. He took a step forward and caught her left hand gently and lifted it to his face and pressed a kiss on the back of her palm, before letting her hand go.
Myra blushed as her heart did a wee somersault. "I will come and take you away soon", he said in a low voice, that managed to send shivers down her spine.
Myra ignored the jittery feeling and frowned, not understanding what his Lord had ment by him coming and taking her away. Where would he take her to? she wondered.
Theodore saw the expression on her face, shook his head, a smile was still plastered on his face. He put both his hands inside either side of his trouser pockets and casually strode away from her towards his large study table.
Myra's eyes followed the Lord and noticed a huge portrait of a lady on the wall behind the table. It was the same lady she had seen on one of the paintings in the first floor drawing room. Rachel was right, compared to the painting in the living room, this one looked majestic.
Lady Aurelia's painting looked so regal and impressive in this one. Unlike the other picture where she was portrayed as a beautiful woman fondling her child, in this one she looked bold and Majestic.
Clad in a rich red colored gown, the Lady was seated on an armchair with her legs crossed and her head held high up, clearly defining her perfect jaw structure. She was so unique. Her oval face was flawless and smooth, her perfectly arched black eyebrows rested above her slightly slanted eyes; her nose was straight and those generous full lips of hers--- uff..she was an epitome of perfection alright!.
Theodore saw Amyra staring at his mother's potrait with an awe, and cleared his throat to get her attention back on him. Myra immediately snapped her head to look at the Lord and lowered her head, feeling intimidated.
"We are heading to wendyln in three weeks time, remember?" asked the Lord.
And Myra nodded, "I'll come and pick you up". Theo clarified her doubts and she visibly relaxed.
Myra thanked him once again and left the Lord's study after bidding him a goodbye.
Once she was back in her temporary guest room. She dumped herself on the bed. She laid there for a long time, staring at the ceiling while her fingers played with the pink charm stone around her neck.
After what seemed like ages, she got up from the bed with a sigh and started packing her things.
Selecting four dull colored dresses from the wardrobe, she set them aside. All the dresses that was provided to her were of fine quality, none of which a maid would ever wear. But she had no other choice. Her bag that contained her old clothes were stolen and she had to pick up a few dresses from what the Lord had provided, hoping that he wouldn't mind.
Just then someone knocked the door and Myra walked over to open the door and let Rachel in.
"Are you going somewhere, Myra?" asked the maid curiously. She didn't understand why the butler had instructed her to help Myra pack her stuff.
Rachel had bought in a small satchel bag for her to put her things in.
"I will be working at the Swanson's household from now on", Myra answered
"Working?", Rachel questioned sounding confused.
Myra nodded "hmm..". Neatly placing the clothes in the bag, she put her father's pocket watch and the viol bottle in it too.
"Did the Lord permit you to?" Rachel inquired.
Myra nodded once again, "His Lord only told me to work there".
The maid frowned lightly. Why the Lord would allow his guest to work for someone else, was something beyond Rachel's understanding.
Myra sat on the bed and tapped the empty space next to her, signalling the Maid to sit next to her. Rachel hesitated before sitting next to Myra. Over this last week Myra and Rachel had become quiet good friends.
Even though she addressed her using honorifics sometimes, Rachel was the only person who would talk to her freely while the other Maids treated her like a lady.
"When will you be leaving?"
"Sometime in the noon, I think", Myra responded.
"Can't you just stay here?" Rachel asked.
Myra shook her head, "I came all the way to terracotta, to live on my own. Independently with my earnings. I don't want to depend on the Lord for everything".
"Will you visit here often then?", the maid asked. "Swanson's mansion is quite nearby"
"I will try to", Myra assured her with a small smile.
Rachel nodded understandingly. Both of them chatted on for sometime and Rachel left after a while stating that she has some work.
Alone once again, Myra went to the bath chamber to wash her face and freshen up and with a heavy heart, she started getting ready to leave.
