Wonder Why

The two pairs switched places, so now Matsu and Arata were sitting at the table with notes that were already written by the rest of their team. The boy got to work trying to make sense of what was already discussed so they could expand on the points. Given who his partner was, he believed that a lot of heavy lifting was going to have to be done. Unfortunately for him, that wasn't going to be the case. At least, not on this half of the work.

"Ow!" Yogi cried out not long after he and Yuki took to their stations. It wasn't something that anyone had paid much mind to at first, then he did it again. "Ow!" He yelled out again.

"Is something wrong?" Arata asked, feeling a bit concerned over the pain his friend seemed to be in.

"It's no big deal." Yogi just laughed it off as he held a towel to stop the bleeding of his finger. "I'm a bit clumsy when it comes to cooking." He told him. That wasn't the only thing he was clumsy in, but at the moment, it certain was the one thing that was killing him. "Ow…" The boy said it again as he accidentally grabbed the pot where it was hot.

At this rate, his buddy was going to lose a finger. So Arata had to think of something. Of course, he should be telling that boy to just go back to the safety of working on this paper. Though, he didn't want to have Yuki all by her lonesome in the kitchen. The problem is Matsu was not a suitable replacement for returning to cook, so he was left with only one option.

"Yogi, maybe you should just finish off our project." Arata suggested to him. "At least so we can get the food all done without hurting ourselves."

"Are you sure?" Yogi responded, not wanting to have them handicap themselves because of him. "I mean, you are the smart one here." It wasn't meant as an insult, but it was the truth. Arata didn't relent on his stance. It was a good thing for him that there was someone on his side.

"I agree with Arata." Yuki spoke up. "I don't like seeing you hurt yourself." She explained herself, but there was one main reason that she didn't want to mention. "And well…"

"I know I know." Yogi's weakness for his cousin was what led to him giving into them. "You don't want me to hold you back, it's fine, I understand." He left the kitchen to take Arata's spot, and the boy was able to return back to his first job.

"I'm a little worried about our project." Arata said to Yuki as soon as he walked up to her. This wasn't an ideal situation as it was, and him not bringing much work to their homework didn't make him feel much better. "It's kind of a little unfair that I'm doing so little for you."

"That's not true." She replied. "You've been a lot of help in the kitchen, so don't think we're being burdened by you." It cheered him up a little, but cooking wasn't what he had in mind when he came to her house. So there was only so much she could do for him there.

They got to work on finishing up this meal. The soup was moving along nicely, as Arata added in the chopped up veggies and meat. Meanwhile, Yuki was doing the rest of the cutting that Yogi was unable to do safely or competently.

"You're doing a really great job." Arata commented on her cutting skills. Of course, all he had to compare was his own and Yogi's performance, but even she was doing a better job than his own mother. "I've never seen someone as good as you."

"Well, I just cook a lot with my mom." She got bashful over hearing his compliment, turning her head away from him. "It's nothing special or anything."

"You certainly have some skill with it." He continued to talk to her. "You'd make a good housewife in the future."

"…" Something about him saying that got her to turn back towards him. "Is that something you'd want when you grow up?"

"A good housewife?" He thought about it for a little bit. He certainly already had done a good amount of work between the babysitting and gardening. So being the one to work in the family was pretty much a done deal for Arata. So it would be nice to have someone at home to take care of the rest. "I'd guess I would."

"That's… Nice." She was pleased with the answer, but now was the time to change the subject. Yuki didn't want to continue this line of conversation because it might bring about things she'd rather not talk about. "You know, it's a little funny how we're doing this together now." Her words had gotten a lot more quieter now, as if to not let the other pair hear them.

"Funny how?" Arata also lowered his voice as well. While this had baffled him, he could tell that she didn't want this part of the conversation to enter uninvited ears.

"I mean, what are the chances?" She was referring to how they were childhood friends. Or more accurately, close friends as kids who had to separate. "It's funny that not only did we meet again, but you were friends with my cousin." That was also not mentioning the fact that the pair had in fact reunited before her return to Japan as online friends with a shared hobby.

"It is kind of funny when you say it like that." Hearing her repeat all that made him grin. "And I really am glad to see you again after all those years." Though he had only remembered his time with her shortly before she moved back in. Considering how close they were, the boy could never shake one major thought regarding their relationship. That being, why would he forget about someone he cared so deeply about those years back. While he never brought it up to Yuki, the fact that he put a heart around their first initials in his journal should speak for itself.

Yet if that really was the case, how could he completely forget who she was? Not just her name, but what she looked like, or even the events happening in the first place. That also went with why she didn't seem to remember him either.

"I wonder why mom apologized to you." Yuki broke him out of his thoughts, as they moved onto getting bowls out for the soup and rice. "When I told her about the two of us, she looked like she was a little sad about the news." It baffled her, since the girl figured that this was a good thing.

"She probably just felt bad about making us lose our friendship." Arata answered. He didn't want to say it out loud to not hurt Yuki's feelings, but that girl didn't have any other friends beyond him for years. Somehow the young him found a way to break passed her shell that she still lived with. It would've helped her a lot in growing up to have someone there with her.

"Oh well, at least we still have the memories." She said that, but also brought up that a diary she kept during that time had apparently gone missing. So all she was left with was the very vague memories of him, and what her mother had told her.

"Where do you think that diary went?" He asked her. "I know you guys have moved across countries now, so maybe it's lost forever. But we could try looking for it if we ever have time." She couldn't say for certain, so they agreed to check the attic whenever they had free time. Of course, since their prior relationship had to be kept secret as per Yuki's request. There weren't going to be many opportunities to do so with just the two of them.

"Okay, the food's ready." Yuki announced to the others as they brought four bowls to the dining table. "Mom said she'll be back late, so we can already have some food."

"Great, I'm starving." Yogi immediately sat down when he heard the news. Matsu was not far behind him either.

"Thank you for the food." Her saying those words were the only delay she had before chowing down. Yuki and Arata joined them at the table as soon as they got themselves cleaned from cooking the food. For Yuki, this was a weird way to have dinner, since she was spending it with someone that she was very unfamiliar with, that being Matsu. So she was quiet as they ate.

"I guess once we're done eating, I can finally get to working on this project." Arata spoke while blowing on his soup to cool it down. Despite all the things he had experienced, there was still belief within him that they could have some normalcy.
