Obviously, Cheng Sheng beating (separating) the mandarin ducks (pair/couple) Jing Kang and Lei Ling is to punish them for the mistake that they made that almost cost one of the sect leaders' life - Yu Wen's life. Because Jing Kang is a talisman master and he has the power to defend his comrades from mental and spiritual attacks, which happened to Yu Wen. Yet, he didn't since he went to spend his time with his lover, Lei Ling, who was forcefully brought back by Cheng Sheng to Xinfaxian Sect to discipline Lei Ling.
