SEAN'S POV
Before I could answer, the door opened, and a nurse came in. Her smile disappeared the moment she saw me, and she stood pinned on the doorframe. Her eyes widened and froze for a few seconds as she gazed at me, though she managed to let out an awkward smile afterward. Probably, she didn't expect I was there because Calla came alone. And I was sure that part of her endorsement from the ER stated that she should have maximum confidentiality and that there should be no visitors allowed.
"Yes?" Calla raised her brows on her, embarrassed by her sudden intrusion. I was sure she knocked on the door but perhaps, we were just too overwhelmed to hear it.
The nurse looked at me, then back at Calla in an unsteady gaze. "I'm sorry if I disturb you, ma'am, sir but I'm here to give you-"
"Please, come back later. We have some important matters to discuss," Calla replied, suppressing her embarrassment from showing up.
"Sure, ma'am. Just dial o1 to connect to the nurses' station."
I smiled at the nurse to ease the tension away, and her eyes glittered as she smiled back. I was about to tell her to keep what she saw to herself, but she slipped away from the door before I could open my mouth.
I looked back at Calla who was taking a deep breath to let go of her embarrassment. She only spoke again when I gestured for her to do so, perhaps losing the courage to continue our disrupted subject.
"Sean, when are you going to help me get out of here?" I smiled inwardly at how she changed the topic.
"Now," was my brief reply.
Her eyes brightened again the moment I uttered the word, and she moved closer to me. She took another breath and whispered, "Sean, I'm pregnant."
I knew about it already while we were still in the Emergency Room, but the way she told me made my heartbeats race. A glint of fear and hesitation flickered in her eyes, and she looked away.
"How old?" I held my breath as I waited for her reply.
"The doctor said it's eight weeks." She stared at me, watching my reaction.
A lump formed in my throat as I did a mental count of the weeks that passed after we made love. My mind suggested that the baby could be mine.
I was dying to ask who she thought was the father, but I couldn't dare. I got scared. I could never turn my back on Mr. Thomas Grey, and I did not want to break Red's heart. I was set on marrying her as soon as she falls in love with me. Calla had been together with the president, anyway.
However, if the baby is indeed mine, how can I turn my back on my child?
I stood up and called a pizza house. "Twenty sets of your best-sellers and twenty liters of soft drinks, your choice. Have half of it delivered to the nurses' station and a half to the utility department."
Calla gazed at me with furrowed brows, wondering why I did a bulk order. I threw her back a glance but did not explain. I proceeded to call the head of the maintenance and utility department instead after I settled the payment.
"Gather your staff in thirty minutes. I ordered pizza for all of you. Take a short break and enjoy."
"S-sir? Who's this, please?" I could picture his reaction in my mind, and I got amused.
"From the HR."
I heard a gasp before a series of 'thank you's flooded into my ear. I chuckled at their evident joy. I then turned to Calla and said, "Prepare."
"What?" she clarified, but I answered her with a quick stare before I went out of the room.
I passed by the nurses' station and saw the nurse who entered the room. She was answering a call, but her eyes caught me approaching their cubicle. She then hurriedly ended her call and opened the glass window of the station.
"Sir, is ma'am ready now?"
"Maybe, later," I shrugged and then smiled at all of them as I ran my eyes on everyone inside the station. "By the way, guys, I ordered sets of pizza for you. Enjoy it while it's hot. It will be here in 25 minutes."
All their eyes were on me, and it felt like it was boring a hole in my face. Not even one of them thanked me. They just stuck their eyes on me, unblinking. I smiled and closed the window before I walked away. I then heard squeals the sooner the edges of the glass fitted together.
I went straight to the parking area and slid into my car. I turned the engine on, waiting for the notification that the delivery personnel has arrived. After exactly thirty minutes, my phone beeped. I then called Calla through the intercom.
"There's a set of a scrub suit in the closet. Put it on and get down to the basement using the elevator near the exit. It's on your right, a few steps from your door."
I calculated the time that Calla could change into her scrub suit. When my set time was up, I stepped out of the car and walked towards the guard who posted near the basement elevator.
"Good day, sir!" he smiled, having recognized me already.
"Good day, chief. I just ordered a pizza and a cold drink for all of you. Why not get your share first?"
He was about to say no, but I was already holding my phone to my ear in a loudspeaker mode.
"Maintenance department, good day!" The guard stared at me as soon as he recognized the voice of the call receiver.
"Sir, can you please have a slice of the pizza sent over to your guard in the basement?"
"Of course, sir. All of us are going to have our share."
The guard gave out a shy grin as he glanced at me. "Thank you, sir."
I smiled back at him and locked his gaze. Out of the corners of my eye, I saw Calla emerging from the elevator.
"You're welcome, chief. By the way, how long have you worked here?" I asked, trying to distract him until Calla could safely take her exit. I secretly pressed a button on my car remote, hoping that the blinking lights would give her a clue.
