I opened my eyes for the first time in weeks.
The sky above was black, an inky abyss I could fall into at a moment's notice. I had never seen such a dark, empty sky in my previous world.
I suppose that was one of the advantages of this world. By working together, people have been able to build their own lights on this planet, bright enough to blot out the sky itself. Back in my world, no human would ever work together for anything. Why would you, when you could do everything yourself? Why risk being stabbed in the back?
Magic was power. True power. With it, you could do anything you wanted. You knew the risks to yourself, and there was no chance of magic ever betraying you due to some errant mood.
But even then, people had bound together in my previous world, hadn't they? To overturn me.
I sat up, naked. I was on the roof of my apartment building, which I had made into a pool area.
