Happy Birthday

Eve

I smile as the smell of pancakes travel down the hall, blessing my senses with their sweet smell.

I hurry out of bed, following my nose to the kitchen. As I entered the kitchen my stomach made its self known by sounding like an angry grizzly.

I heard a bubbly laugh and smile when I see Ella, my sister, cooking the fluffy goodness.

"Morning Bunny." Ella hummed turning back to the food.

"Mornin'," I say, smiling at my nickname. I hurry and sit on a stool as Ella continued to hum, finishing a huge stack if pancakes.

I envied her looks, as sisters everyone expects us to look the same but we're complete opposites. Her fair skin contrast with my pale pink shaded skin tone, her 5'11 frame towered over mine at only 4'5, though I'm only 8 and she's 16, her light blond hair was grown to her waist and my dark brown hair was chopped just below my shoulders. The only thing we had in common were our light blue eyes. Everytime we told someone we were sister's they'd either laugh or say 'wow that's a shocker.'

Ella places half of the fluffy pancakes in front of me, dragging me from my thoughts.

She rummages in our drawers until she finds what she's looking for, a candle.

I blush as she pokes it in my breakfast. "Happy Birthday!" She squeals with so much joy I can't help but smile.

"You know i-" i start but she cuts me off.

"I know I know! 'You hate your birthday bla bla bla!' Just this year, let me make it happy." She smiles sadly.

I haven't celebrated my birthday for years because when I was 5 my parents got into a car crash and died, going to get my birthday cake. I'd blamed myself and still do, I'm cursed with bad luck.

I sigh when Ella starts to pout. "Fine! But it better be good and don't spend over fifty dollars." She smiles and claps her hands.

"This'll be fun!" She skips to her seat, lighting the candle. "Make a wish!"

I think for a second and find what I want, 'I wish that Ella will stay safe, for as long as I live.' I pray to whatever God or goddess is listening and blow out the candle.

She claps her hands and we eat our pancakes, talking about this and that.

Ella was right, it was fun. When we went to lunch she told everyone it was my birthday and we ate free, they even got me a free cake.

We're watching some corny movie now, Ella saw it and just had to take me to see it. My popcorn bucket was almost empty along with my liter cup of cola when nature called.

"I'ma go for a sec, be right back," I whispered and Ella grunted in response.

I snorted and left the dark room. I hummed to a few songs as I walked around, searching for the bathroom. By now there were barely any people in the halls and most the lights were dead or dying so, of course me being 8 and obsessed with crime movies started to run while looking.

I finally saw one and headed to it, relived. I finished quickly and started on my way back to the room me and Ella were in when a hand grabbed my arm, yanking me into a dark, pitch black room.

I screamed as loud as I could but no one must have heard me, no one came.

That's how it started, the story if how I disappeared. The people who took me called themselves "rogues"  and I quickly learned they weren't human.

They were wolves.

Through the years they've kept me they've done a lot of crazy experiments, none I should have been able to survive but I have against all odds.

I can't wait for the day I can escape and see Ella again, she must be scared.

Ella

'What's taking her so long?' I think as the movie comes to an end, 'Maybe she got lost?'

I stand up, popcorn in hand, and start searching the halls for Eve. I'm rounding a corner when I hear a blood curling scream.

Eve.

I run at full speed to where I heard the noise. I reach an empty room, the lights are off so I turn on my phone's flashlight.

And scream.

Blood covers the floor, an abandon bucket and cup lay on the floor.

This can't be happening. It can't...

I fall to my knees, shaking, and dial 811.

I'm sitting in an ambulance waiting for word on what happened to my sister, my baby sister..

I take a shaky breath when I see the detective.

"We didn't find her," he says bluntly. "That only means she could still be alive but the amount of blood isn't a good sign." He looks at me with sympathy, "We'll find who did this." With that he leaves me.

I bite my lip, Eve.. I couldn't loose her as well..she's only 8..

The next few days went by with no leads, days into weeks, weeks into months, months into years. Eventually they dubbed her dead. There was a manorial to remember her, they even put an empty coffin in the ground.

It's been eight years now, every year I go to the theater on her Birthday, hoping she'll walk out of one of the rooms like nothing ever happened.

But what we hope never really happens.. does it?
