Surviving The Blood Moon

As Jacob said those words, the entire world became dyed in a crimson red.

"Well I would have said you should relax, but it appears that fate has other ideas."

I could only look at him in confusion.

"what do you mean?"

Jacob then began explaining what is happening.

"Tonight is a blood moon, meaning that we are unsafe no matter what we do. The zombies are stronger during these nights, and you will also see a certain variant of the regular zombie. The worst part is that zombies are able to break down doors, and they appear more commonly. People have a saying for the blood moon: The night where the rivers run red and monsters swarm aplenty."

"This is going to suck, isn't it?"

"It most definitely will, and I regret to inform you that we are currently in grave danger."

The moment Jacob said those words, I heard a loud thud at our door.

"Oh s***."

"Indeed."

"Well, I guess I have to do something about that."

"You should really hurry up, or we may just end up dead in a matter of seconds."

With that said, I proceeded to go with plan A: Explosives.

'I am going to end up as a pyromaniac soon if I keep blowing things up.'

Plan A was not the best idea, since zombies aren't really well known for durability. I could only think of one sentence for the scene outside:

Paint the 'town' red.

Now I would say that the outside isn't that scary, but I am pretty scared by the scene of a horde of zombies shambling through a dark forest, especially since it is also raining red water.

At this point I immediately ran through the hole I made in my house, and immediately said one thing to Jacob:

"We are completely and utterly f*****."

Jacob just looks past me and responds:

"I can see your point."

I honestly had nothing to say other than that, since I was still in shock at seeing an entire army of zombies.

As I was staring at the oncoming army of shambling bodies, Jacob tapped my shoulder and pointed in the direction of the rising moon.

"Look over there. Do you see what I see? Because I really hope that you do."

I look at where he is pointing, and immediately widen my eyes in surprise.

"Is that a person waving a glow stick in our direction?"

"I'm pretty sure it is."

now at this point I am extremely relieved to know that there may be other people out there. I guess I never thought about the fact that the old man was the only person around that 'light red' castle.

While I was thinking this, I felt something drip onto my shoulder. I looked up and I am not ashamed to say I screamed at what I saw.

it was a big red dripping ball of blood, which was covered in eyes the size of my hand. You do not realize how terrifying that is until it is floating 1 foot above your head, and approaching in very slowly.

Hearing my scream, Jacob looks at the cause and widens his eyes. As soon as he saw what it was, he pulled out a throwing knife and impaled it in one of its eyes.

I do not know how, but the thing screeched in pain when it was hit. The sound was physically painful to hear, so I did the only thing I could think of at the moment, and slashed it with my sword.

It split in two, but when I looked at the still floating body, all I saw was teeth. So. Many. Teeth.

All I could think of was to get as far away from that thing as possible, and Jacob seemed to agree with me on that idea.

We both began dashing towards the spot where we saw the person waving a glow stick, and we came upon a campsite. It only seemed to house one person, sadly, so we decided to search for that person we saw earlier.

Suddenly, a voice came out of nowhere behind us.

"It's good to see that you two made it out of that death trap alive."

"Jesus christ!"

"Who?"

"Nobody you need to know about right now."

"Alright then."

"So, who are you."

"The name's Isaac, and I am a merchant who ended up here due to some real bad luck. Got separated from my friends because one of them tripped and splashed me with a teleportation potion, so now I'm stranded in the middle of nowhere. I did not expect to see anybody sane in this world anymore."

I was confused when he said that last bit.

"What do you mean by anybody sane?"

He just looked at me and said:

"Kid, this world has been dealing with monsters for decades, and we are losing. Bad. I have lived for more than 60 years, and I know for a fact that my group was one of the last few people sane enough to be considered people in this world."

It was at this point that Jacob decided to speak up.

"Man, I expected things to be bad, but to thing that we are going extinct."

"The guides may know all about the history of this world, but the one thing they tend to avoid seeing is the present. Do not blame yourself for not knowing, but you should always strive to learn more."

"There are many flaws in the orders' ways, but I am still a guide through and through."

Jacob starts muttering something I could barely hear, sounding along the lines of:

"If only I studied monsters instead of memorizing every way to make anything. Maybe I would have recognized that monstrosity."

It was at this point that I decided to rejoin the conversation.

"Sorry to interrupt, but I think that we should keep moving, since those things might follow us here."

"I can agree with that reasoning, kid. I have dealt with my fair share of blood moons, and that method has been proven to work. I am living evidence of it."

Suddenly Jacob rejoins the conversation, asking only one question:

"Which direction should we head?"

" I say we head east, since it is easily discernible due to the fact that the sun rises from that direction."

"Solid logic, kid. I say east as well."

"I guess we have a unanimous decision on where we go."

And so our forced relocation begins.
