I continued deeper into the jungle, hoping to see something other than giant bees.
Spoiler alert: I didn't
As I walked deeper, I continually used the baby slime as a decoy for the bees to attack while I killed them. it worked fine until I reached one of the larger caverns in the jungle, a place that was completely different from the rest.
The whole cavern had become a beehive, and I could see that there were tunnels leading deeper into the hive as well.
'Damn, they really took over this place. I expected the beehive to be smaller...'
While I may have been startled by the sheer size of the hive, I still continued my trek into the gigantic bees' nest.
I quickly approached the entrance to the hive, noting the giant bees that seemed more focused on working than me.
'Huh. I guess they have a one-track mind...'
I walked further, but the situation soon changed as soon as I took my first step into the hive.
My foot stepped onto the first piece of the hive, and all the bees in the area stopped moving all at once.
I noticed the lack of motion and looked around the hive, only to see a creepy scene.
All the bees had turned to face me.
I voiced my thoughts out loud, speaking to no one in particular.
"Oh I fucked up, didn't I?"
{Beyond a doubt. We suggest you start running for your life now.}
'Well this situation is just the bee's knees.'
{That has to be the worst attempt at a joke we've heard in centuries.}
And so I began running. And the bees followed too.
'Of all things to make hyper-aggressive, why bees?!' I shouted in my mind, the question meant for a 'single' being.
{We didn't choose. We rolled dice to see which creatures got what trait.}
The response made me stumble for a moment, but I quickly righted myself soon after.
'That is way too unreliable to have come out this well.' I thought with a straight face.
{We got lucky.}
I sighed, annoyed by how stupid the answer was. Too bad I knew that it would be something these Gods would do.
'You are an unreliable idiot.'
{Wrong. We are four unreliable idiots in one body.}
I stumbled once again, with this time taking a bit longer to right myself due to how shocked I was at the absurd answer.
'What.'
{Why do you think we refer to ourselves as we? We are we for a reason.}
'Okay that second sentence does not sound correct in the slightest, but I get what you mean. Thank you for having lowered my opinion even more than before.'
The Gods shot back a snappy response, but I decided to ignore it in order to focus on running.
I looked at my surroundings, noting several details.
'Yellow, filled with holes and bees, and very organized. Yup, this is a beehive.'
~Who would've guessed.~
'Oh god you're here too. Why do I have the worst luck today?'
~I just came here for the show, your next challenge is not going to happen right now.~
I sighed in relief, the scene of the meteorite chase still fresh in my mind.
I did not want a sentient beehive out for my blood. Not one bit.
~I would never do something as evil as that. I have to give you a chance of survival at least.~
As I was running, I was constantly thinking of ways to deal with the bees, but very few ideas came to mind.
And then I had a 'great idea' (Hindsight is always 20/20).
'Hey Gods, is this beehive flammable?'
{Yes, why do you ask?}
A smile broke out on my face.
'I just had a great idea.'
The two entities had different reactions to the idea I just had.
{Good idea!}
~You are a complete moron.~
I looked behind me, hoping that I had lost the bees.
Too bad the buzz was just as loud as ever.
'Looks like I don't have another choice. Well, arson is finally a solution to something I guess.' I thought.
And so I pulled out one of the ever-burning torches made from wood and gel and hesitated in throwing it.
'I'm starting to think that this is a bad idea.'
The baby slime had other plans, though.
I grabbed the torch out of my hand and threw it away from us, soon chasing after it.
'Did it just set the beehive on fire in hopes of playing catch?'
{Yes. Yes it did.}
"Well there goes any chance of me getting out of this unsinged.'
I watched as the torch quickly lit the hive blocks on fire, spreading like a wildfire in an area filled with old eucalyptus trees.
I decided that I should probably book it at that point, as I was not eager to become a charred corpse so early in life.
I dashed towards the bees, noting that their focus had been changed away from me once again.
'Jeez, these bees are weird as hell. Intrude into their home and they attack you. Set their home on fire and they don't.' I thought sarcastically.
And then I remembered that I forgot the baby slime.
'Ah shit.' I thought sadly. The little slime was starting to grow on me, and I was sad knowing that it had died.
And then I looked behind me, viewing the blazing inferno that was quickly approaching.
'Well, I guess I better book it.'
And so I ran all the way back to the entrance of the hive, quickly stepping off of the dry hive and onto the wet muddy ground of the jungle.
I stopped running a minute after I reached the entrance of the hive, into an open area close enough that I was able to look into the hive's entrance.
I looked in there and was happily surprised to see the baby slime flying out of the hive.
And then my happiness was quickly snuffed out when I saw what was chasing it.
"That's a really big bee.'
{It is the queen after all.} The Gods helpfully commented.
"Fuck."
