We reached the Archery Ground. It was just beside the garden. On reaching there I noticed that very few sendates around. Yesterday Isabella had told me that 'Sendate' was the official term for descendents of half-bloods. Sendate meant the one who connects and now, when no half-blood was alive, except me, the only connection between gods and humans are the descendents of half-bloods. That's why they are called sendate.
"Hey, Will? Where are the others?" I asked him.
"Listen Adrian, this is not a school. Here we do things according to our interests. Since we are connected to a particular god, our powers, likes and dislikes are more or less like them. For example, our archery instructor is related to Apollo. That's the reason why he's very good at archery. " he said and excitement filled me. I had always hated schools. I hated their methods, so much that at a point of time, I had even started to think that dying would be better compared to it.
I didn't know why but, I never did great in school. I just couldn't focus on studies. I always thought that there was no point of studying what you didn't like. It was just a waste of time and from my experience, it often leads to depression.
My happiness was immeasurable when I heard that this place was different.
My thoughts were interrupted when our archery instructor came forth.
"Sendates, we have a new recruit with us today." he announced and I knew what was going to happen. He was referring to me, and judging from the awkward glances I was receiving, others knew it too.
"Let me introduce you to Adrian Crimson, the son of Zeus." he said and everyone present there, together, looked at me.
Now please tell me, how would you feel when numerous curious and peculiar eyes were glued on you. They all were staring at me like I had murdered someone and now was being imprisoned. Every single strand of hair on my body stood.
'Why the hell was I stuck in this awkward situation?' I thought.
"Umm. Hello." I feebly said, uncertain how to act. I had never attracted so much attention.
"Okay, that's enough introduction. Now focus here." our instructor said and I was saved.
"What is his name?" I asked Will when I realized that I still didn't knew the instructor's name.
"He's Joseph Mallord Turner." he said.
Mr. Turner seemed calm and quiet nice at first, but as he carried on his class, he became more serious.
It was my first time using a bow and arrow. I didn't even know the correct way to hold them. When Mr. Turner saw my condition, he uttered just two words, "It's gonna be difficult."
I tried again but this time the arrow went flying into the garden and hit a satyr exactly in his butt. The satyr stomped his hooves and muttered something useless curses. He took the arrow and broke it apart into two pieces, yelling, "Die! you ignorant arrow. How dare you touch my sweet booty."
I was staring dumbly at him. I looked at Will and Isabella, who were grinning secretly.
"Is that guy mentally disturbed?" I asked them and their grin changed into loud laughter. Even Mr. Turner was smiling now.
"Adrian, you have to do better than that." he said, still smiling.
I again took my bow, ready to make complete fool of myself. I knocked an arrow. This time, determined to hit the target. And I released it from the bow. The arrow, this time, flew past the target and disappeared.
"I can't do it." I wailed and threw the bow on the ground. "I am a complete failure."
Mr. Turner picked up the bow from the ground and handed it to me. I looked at him and was surprised to see his expression.
His eyes were glaring at me with terrifying coldness. He looked frightening and intimidating.
"Don't you ever, ever insult a weapon like this. It can have many terrifying effects." he said in an alarming tone. "Many gods hate it. And by doing so you will be on their 'nemesis' list and believe me, it's never good."
Then he moved towards a kid, who was struggling with his arrow. Even when he had left, I found it hard to move.
"He's right. Some gods like Ares, Hephaestus and Apollo do take insult of a weapon as personal insult." Will said.
I was uncertain what to do next so I looked at my bow. "I'm sorry if I hurt you." I said and honestly I meant it. But I couldn't understand why Will and Isabella were laughing hysterically. Like I had cracked a joke.
After that, they kept on grinning occasionally. I was still trying to hit the target. And I think that by now you can guess what would have happened next. I didn't hit the target, even once and how could I? After all, I was the supreme lord of failure.
