Constructing A Bomb

Taking in that Lin Chao was unscathed, Lin Shiyu had nothing more to say. With a huff, she turned around and headed back into the house.

Lin Chao entered as well.

Then, he closed the door, locked it, and blocking the remaining gap with some cloth.

He removed the flying knives and magazine arm guards on himself and wiped himself with a dry towel to get rid of his sweat and scent before he returned to the living room.

To hunt for a special zombie, one must first find one.

There was a piece of equipment in the apocalypse called the Organism Detector that could probe a zombie's brain wave and attract them. It was rather common and was not difficult to procure. However, it could only attract low-level zombies that had no instincts.

Higher-level zombies that were already equipped with mankind's intelligence would not be tricked by it at all.

Lin Chao once obtained a technology chip from the ruins so he was able to build simple tools like this.

He first carried the computers, mobile phones, and electrical appliances from the units downstairs that had no zombie up and disassembled them. Picking apart a few useful parts and soldering them together, a simplified version of the Organism Detector was successfully built after a few hours.

"Adjusting the volatility to one hundred should allow it to attract the special zombies. Normal zombies won't be summoned as they're totally unaffected by such a high level."

The Organism Detector worked like a resonator as it was able to resonate with the special zombies' brain waves. Normal zombies were unable to detect it as they lacked the frequency possessed by the special zombies.

The Organism Detector was only Lin Chao's first step. He then selected a suitable spot with his binoculars at the window since it was impossible for him to battle the special zombies face to face once they were summoned. They had vastly different physiques so Lin Chao could only kill them with traps.

There was an assortment of traps.

Digging a pit was the simplest hunting trap but Lin Chao neither had a shovel nor the strength to excavate such a large trough. The option was immediately dropped.

The next method was rolling stones — to place an object on a high enough place before letting it roll down and collide with the target. However, Lin Chao could neither find a suitable location nor could he lift a rock that was over hundreds of catties himself.

Food poisoning? No, the zombies themselves were toxic enough.

Lin Chao resorted to bombing!

His explosives skill was Grade B, and he could have been an explosives expert in modern times. Making mini bombs with strands of hair and chewing gum was common. He also had a collection of materials to choose from his surroundings now such as petrol in the residential area's cars, gas in the natural gas pipes, heavy metal powders, and more. These are the resources required to achieve an explosion.

Considering his action plan over and again to ensure that nothing was amiss, Lin Chao went out immediately after having lunch.

Average mini-bombs would not work against special zombies. Only the damage from an explosion from fuels would do the trick.

Lin Chao took the elevator down.

It was only the second day of the calamity. Electricity, internet and other supplies in the city were still working. These resources only required the occasional manual maintenance run. After all, they were products of mankind's intelligence. They would not be paralyzed so easily unless it was a serious earthquake or disaster.

As the elevator door opened, Lin Chao was preparing to fight only to see that there was no trapped zombie inside. There were only a few pools of dried blood and a woman's arm.

Lin Chao pressed the button to the first underground floor upon entering the elevator to head to the basement parking.

The enclosed elevator space was oppressively cold and dead, reeking with a rotten stench along with a stinging metallic scent.

The red digits counted down slowly.

Eighteen, seventeen, sixteen…

It went down level by level and finally stopped at the first underground level, the doors opening with a ding.

Lin Chao clenched the steel bar with his eyes trained at the doors that were slowly moving ajar. The sight that greeted him was an empty basement garage. Cars of varying colors were parked there. Browned to darkened blood made several puddles on the floor while wallets, car keys, heels and random objects laid scattered.

There was no zombie!

Breathing out in relief, Lin Chao did not put his guard down. Illuminated by the dim light of the parking space, he moved stealthily to a black Land Rover and was about to drain some petrol into the mineral water bottle that he prepared when he suddenly heard a soft noise made by friction.

It came from his back.

Lin Chao felt the hair on his back standing up as he turned around to see a woman with unruly hair standing up slowly from the back of a red car…

A zombie!

Alarmed, Lin Chao quickly inserted the transparent soft tube that he had brought along into the petrol tank and sucked. When the petrol was about to reach his mouth from the tube, he pushed the tube into the bottle and lowered the set-up, pouring the petrol from the tank into the water bottle.

Sniffing where Lin Chao was, the woman zombie bolted over aggressively. Pieces of putrescent flesh could be vaguely seen on her face that was covered by her long hair.

Lin Chao did not panic. Gently placing the water bottle on the ground, he flipped himself onto the top of the Land Rover while holding the steel bar to first take the advantage of geographical position.

The fashionably dressed woman zombie hurtled toward him and hit the Land Rover. With her head against the car, she tiptoed to grab at Lin Chao's feet. He then took two steps back to where her arms could not reach him and bashed her with the steel bar.

Bang!

The steel bar landed on her head, causing her roars to intensify as she crashed her head against the car continuously as if she was about to flip the vehicle over.

The apparent solution was just to go around it but the woman zombie's intelligence was too low.

Lin Chao did not fool around with the zombie but killed it with a few rapid blows. If they attracted more zombies, the Land Rover would be pushed over with the strength of two zombies.

Although the woman zombie was annihilated, its bellows had roused the other zombies in the room. One by one, seven to eight of them sprang from the back of vehicles and dashed toward Lin Chao with intimidating fury!

Lin Chao swiftly hopped off the car and snatched the now almost fully-filled bottle of petrol before he sprinted for the elevator. The Land Rover was very close to the lift, enabling Lin Chao to hit the button "18" swiftly.

The elevator doors closed so slowly it was torture.

The seven or eight zombies were already darting to him but the doors were only less than halfway closed. As long as a zombie managed to clutch the elevator doors, they would open once again, and once the entrance to the narrow platform was flooded with that handful of zombies… Lin Chao would definitely be devoured no matter how skilled he was.

Faster!

Lin Chao was anxious. The front-running zombie was about to reach – with its speed, it could definitely hurl itself into the elevator before the doors closed!

Cold sweat covered Lin Chao's palms.

He put the petrol bottle down, pulled out the flying knives on his legs, and swiftly adjusted himself to a stable himself.

"Swoosh!" He calmed his breath.

The flying knife that was tossed was akin to a white flash of lightning!

Pang!

The knife went straight into the front-running zombie's eye socket, piercing through it and stabbed inwards until only the grip was left outside. While the strike did not kill it, it came into contact with its nervous center and befell the zombie with a stagger.

The second zombie lightly tripped over the first zombie but it managed to control itself promptly. A bloodthirsty gleam shone across its face as it continued its sprint.

Lin Chao held onto his second flying knife.

Taking in a deep breath, he shot it!

The flying knife stabbed into the zombie's eyes socket accurately, causing it to fall outside the elevator doors.

As the two zombies collapsed, the doors finally met each other in closure.

It was then that Lin Chao panted in relief. It was like he just brushed past the God of Death as cold sweat drenching his clothes.

Returning to the eighteenth floor, Lin Chao began to construct his bomb as soon as he stepped foot into the house.

The explosive was finally made after a night. Only the size of a fist, it was wrapped with parchment papers that were soaked in gas, tied up with some zombie hair, and stuffed into a cooking oil container.

At the break of dawn the next day, Lin Chao headed out once he had breakfast,

Before he marched out, he cut some carrion from the zombie by the door wearing plastic gloves and mashed them in a basin in the kitchen. He then poured distinct spices like pepper and chili powder on himself before swiping the mashed carrion on his clothes, chest, back, and legs.

Even if the carrion seeped through his clothes, Lin Chao was not worried that he would suffer an infection from the skin contact as it would be blocked by his undergarments.

The zombies had a sharp sense of smell and could whiff one's sweat. With the camouflage of the obstructive scents, it greatly reduced the range of one's odor could spread.
