Her Name

"What are you doing over there? Come inside," Grandma Hong invited Yun inside their home. It was Yun and their Captain who came to the Hong household that night to give them their token of gratitude for the elderly.

Although Yun was thrilled that the Captain had taken her with him, she can't seem to welcome herself inside their home. There are two reasons: first, she was too shy to meet the woman, and second, she wanted to stay away from her.

Captain Yoon was already inside. Yun thought that they won't be staying long so she decided to stay outside but the elderly had a different plan.

"Why don't you join us for dinner?" Grandma Hong suggests which the Captain cannot resist.

Yun had no choice but to join them inside. They were now sitting around the table, and that woman was the one serving the food. Yun cannot look up though she was tempted to gaze at the woman's beauty. Instead, she watched her hands that were moving gracefully as if they were doing a dance over the food.

And when they started eating, Yun was still uneasy. She would've been fine if the woman didn't choose to sit across her. Once, while Grandma Hong and the Captain were talking, Yun glanced up and took a time to stare at the woman that when the latter looked up, she was caught off guard.

She accidentally pushed the empty bowl interrupting the whole dinner. All eyes were on her as she take the bowl back on the table.

"I'm sorry," she said without looking at them.

"You should be careful," Captain Yoon told her.

"Yes, sir. I'm sorry," Yun apologized again.

"It's okay, Captain. Things like this could happen. The bowl was empty too so there's no need to be tough on her," the old woman. Yun bowed at the elderly uttering a small thanks for her kindness.

The dinner then ended soon. And Yun hated herself for ruining the half of it. She failed to leave a good impression and it frustrated her that night.

She was sitting outside looking at the night sky. The stars were twinkling brightly and the moon was looking down at her luminously. The skies seemed happy but the one watching it wasn't.

"What are you doing outside?"

Her eyes went to the person who just spoke and she quickly stood up when she saw tat it was their captain. The man chuckled and sat beside her. Yun was still embarrassed of what happened earlier and here she is now sitting with their captain.

"What are you thinking about? You seem so sad." Captain Yoon commented.

Yun looked down. Realizing why she was sad, she then thought that it very petty of her. The world is at war right now but here she is thinking about a woman. It feels like it was a sin. Well, it was?

She is a woman. And she likes another woman. It is wrong.

"I'm just hoping that all of these would be over soon," She said, pertaining to everything that os happening now — the war and her own illusions.

"I hope so too."

If she thinks about it, it was really a bad timing. She shouldn't dwell on the feelings she has now as these things will passed eventually especially when she knew they would not stay there for long. Once the other soldiers were healed, they will head out again to fight in the war. And she couldn't wait until that day comes.

The next morning, Yun was with the injured soldiers when the others went on their morning jog.

"Do you think we can this war?" Junsu, one of the injured soldiers, started to ask. She attended to him giving him his breakfast when he suddenly asked her.

Yun sighed. "We should try."

When she looked at the guy, tears were starting to pool his eyes. Yun immediately finds a towel and gave it to him.

"I miss my mother so much," he uttered sadly.

Junsu is only sixteen now. He is the youngest of them all and Yun cannot help but feel sorry for the boy. She can empathize with him. Being the only child in the house and with her father sick and mother also too weak, she had no choice but to join the army at seventeen years old. She thought, it was also the same situation as Junsu's.

"That is why you need to recover soon. So, we could win this war and we can all go back to our families. I'm sure your mother misses you too," Yun said and stroke his hair to make him feel better.

When he finally calmed down, she helped him to get out and get some fresh air. She ushered her to the platform on the yard and settled him there while she cleans up.

The other soldiers were still not coming back even after she finished cleaning. She was talking to Junsu when they both heard a voice calling from the other house.

Yun saw it was the same woman. Junsu followed where Yun was looking and saw the woman. He smiled at her beauty.

"Who is that, noona?" He asked.

"Hmm?" Yun hummed as she continues to watch the woman as she talk with one of her colleagues.

"She's the one who came here the other night, right? Do you know what her name is?" He asked and Yun only realized it now.

She still doesn't know what the woman's name is.

So, when the others went back and while they were preparing their food, she used that opportunity to ask about the woman.

"By any chance..." Yun started to ask Bada. "Do you know who that woman is?"

"Who?"

"That woman," Yun pointed at the other house. The woman she was talking about was helping out the soldiers with their food, and the fact that most of them were men made her sigh in dismay.

"Ah," Bada nodded. "But why are you asking?"

Yun's eyes widen, did not expecting that to come, and laughed awkwardly. "I just want to know. What's wrong with that? I just want... a new friend..." she replied seriously, looking down.

"Alright then. But tell me something first," Bada bargained when she noticed that Yun is hiding something. And if her guess is right...

"What is it?" Yun asked, very willing to give an answer.

"Who among them do you like? Is it Beom-Gyu? Or Captain Yoon?" Bada asked intriguingly while squinting her eyes at Yun. However, the latter's mouth hanged open at her assumption.

"What the hell are you talking about?!" Yun retaliated.

"What? Am I wrong? Is it Youngbae then? Aish! That guy, what is he even doing there? He's in our team, right?"

"Hey, just shut up before you say more nonsense," Yun ignored Bada and went back to cooking.

"But that woman—"

"Forget it. Let's just finish these, okay?" Yun cut her through, irritated that her friend thought she was being jealous of the woman when she only wanted to know her name!
