Chapter 3

As I opened my eyes, I saw James looking at me. I guessed he was trying to wake me up for my turn on keeping watch.

"Sorry, Its your turn now." James said quietly.

"Don't be. Thank you for waking me up." I said whispering back to him.

As I got up, he took the spot I was in and closed his eyes. I went to a nearby tree and watched our surroundings. We were in a heavily forested area. I took a whiff of the air. I smelled all sorts of stuff. It overwhelmed me entirely and gave me a migraine instantly. I clutch my head and closed my eyes. I needed to focus. I opened my eyes and looked at James. I tired to smell his scent and ignore the rest. It smelled like the farm we lived in. I could smell the lay and the grass on him. The smell of his clothes. Then his body odor entered my nose. I almost threw up from the smell. Everyday showers were a luxury few people had especially us. We would have to find a lake or something to wash ourselves. There's no way I'm traveling smelling that all the time.

That pretty much confirms my heighten sense of smell. Let's focus on hearing. I closed my eyes again and focused solely on hearing my surroundings. I could hear everything around me move. It gave me a small headache but nothing too bad. I opened my eyes and looked at a nearby tree. I focused on it and I could hear how the branches resisted being pushed by the winds. I could hear the leaves moving and the snaps of the ones that broke off. The sound of the wind moving was also there, hitting against the tree.

Let's try my healing again. I took the knife I had that I used to kill mother. As I pulled it out from the cloth I wrapped in, I couldn't help but pause for a bit. I resolved myself and made a small cut on my hand. I flinched from the pain, but I noticed the wound healing. It was already healing the moment I made the cut. It's definitely faster than James. The only difference between us would be our bone structure and his claws. As far as Victor goes, he is probably stronger physically, but I am not sure. James would become more powerful if he gets adamantium injected into his bones. I don't know how I feel about that. I knew once the adamantium was there, it would make him stronger and more durable, but it came with a trade-off. His regenerative powers would constantly be at work trying to keep the adamantium poison at bay. He would lose his immortality and slowly die. Maybe there was something I could do about that. He doesn't deserve to die like that.

I stopped my experiments and decided to focus on keeping watch. Some time passed and the sun started coming up on the horizon. I woke James and Victor up. They slowly got up from the ground.

"We should be far enough from the town. Do any of you have any ideas on what to do?" I asked. James shook his head.

"We could keep going east. I don't know what to do once we get there." Victor said.

"Yea, I think that's a good idea. Its better to increase our distance from this area as much as possible." I agreed with his plan. I knew that eventually James and Victor would become mercenaries and join different wars.

We continued moving east and along the way James and Victor would catch an animal so we could eat something. Eventually I was also able to locate and track the animals too. The harder part was killing them. We would go after small ones since they were easier to kill once we got close enough. Bigger ones would just run away the moment they sensed something. The knife started to get chipped since we usually threw it at the animal and would sometimes miss.

Every time we found a lake we would go and wash ourselves. We kept our clothes on while we did. It wasn't out of embarrassment or anything like that. It was so we don't spend too much time at one place. We had to keep moving. There was something that we all felt. A sense of urgency to keep moving as far away as possible from our home.

As the sun started to go down, we started to look for shelter. We didn't find any large rock formation or cave we would use for cover. It was getting dark quickly, so we had to decide on something.

"Lets just gather some leaves and sticks. We can use them to make a shelter or at least a bed." I decided to tell what to do after seeing them.

"Yea let's go Victor. We'll look for larger sticks." James said as he went off with Victor.

I started to pile the leaves and branches to use for cover. I could hear snapping off to the distance and figured that must be James and Victor. I was proved right when they came back a couple of minutes later with large sticks. We had enough to make one makeshift tent and cover it. It would be enough since the sun is going down.

"You guys get some rest. I'll take first watch." I told them. James and Victor looked at me for a second.

"Are you sure?" James asked.

"Yea if anything happens, I'll wake you guys up." I explained to James.

Victor only nodded and proceeded to lay down inside the tent. James just looked at me for a bit longer and followed what Victor did. Seeing him concerned made me feel nice. I never had any siblings in my past life, so it was a welcomed change.

I decided to just sit near a tree and listen to our surroundings. I could hear all the insects and small animals around us. I could pinpoint the location of the noise just by focusing on it. I continued to practice this until I heard something off.

It sounded like running of an animal. It was running fast and it sounded bigger than what was around us. I tried to sniff the air, but I couldn't smell anything. The wind was blowing toward from the source. Which means that if it's a bear and a wolf then it got a whiff of our scent. I waited to see if it continued its course towards us and decided to wake James and Victor up.

"Guy! There's something coming our way! Wake up!" I yelled. Victor was the first to leave the tent and looked around.

"Listen over here. Do you hear it?" I asked Victor. He narrowed his eyes in the direction of the sound.

"We need to move." Victor said. I think he knows what's coming at us.

"What is it? A bear or something? We could probably scare it off if we work together." I said.

"There's more than one…" Victor said. That shocked me. How did I miss that? I focused again and I could hear more stomps. Its hard to tell the number but its for sure more than one.

"Damn it. Sorry." I whispered.

"Its okay. At least you were able to hear something coming to us." James said as we came next to me.

"Guys, its coming too fast at us. We need to start moving now." Victor told us as he started to take off running.

James and I followed Victor as we ran away from whatever was following us. We continued for some time but had to stop. We were tired and it was hard to run in the dark. We leaned against the trees to catch our breath. I was too tired to focus on listening, but I felt something off. That's when I noticed lights in the distance and small figures coming towards us.

"Guys!" I yelled and pointed at the direction. Both looked at what I was pointing at and had a shocked expression.

I heard barking something near us. I quickly put the information together. We were being tracked. The dogs probably took our scent and were able to lead the people to us. I can't tell how many came but we are at a disadvantage. I looked towards James and Victor and was about to tell them something before I was interrupted by barking. A dog was coming at me and leaped. It sank its teeth at my right arm as I tried to defend myself.

"Lydia!" James scream and tried to help but was interrupted by another dog.

I fell as the speed and weight of the dog hit me. The pain was intense as the dog's teeth were hitting my bones. It started to shake its head and try to drag me away. Trying to focus, I got the knife out and stabbed it multiple times. The dog yelped and got quiet. I didn't have time to get up as another dog came at me from behind and tried to bite my head. I was lucky enough move enough that it only got my hair. I firmly held the knife again and stabbed the dog. This time I aimed for the throat and shoved it up to try and hit the brain. It didn't make a sound as I did that.

I pushed the dog off my hair and got up. I noticed my right arm was already healed and look for James. I saw him desperately trying to push the dog off him. It was biting him in different places as James kept on kicking the dog off. I ran and stabbed the dog from the back. It yelped and ran off quickly with the knife still on its back.

"James! Get up! We need to get moving!" I yelled at him.

"What about Victor? Where's Victor?" James asked. I looked around to find Victor. I heard a yelp and saw him with the knife I had and dragging another dog behind him.

"Thanks for the knife. It helped." Victor said with a grin. I looked at him shocked. How did he get the knife? I shook my head. It didn't matter now. We needed to get out of here.

"Come on, Let's-" I didn't have a chance to say anything as I heard a loud bang and felt a force push me on my chest.

"I found them!" Someone screamed.

"They got the dogs! Quick shoot them!" Someone else screamed.

I couldn't really feel the pain of the bullet. I think it was all the adrenaline in my body kicking in. I knew what we had to do in order to survive this.

"Victor! James!" I yelled at them and started to charge at our attackers. I knew they would follow me.

The guy I was charging at was the one that shot me. I screamed as I was running towards him. He started to fire his gun and hit me on my right shoulder. It felt like someone yanking me from my right shoulder, but I didn't stop. Another shot fired and this one was on my chest again. It slowed me down, but I continued to rush at him.

"What the f-" The guy said as I jumped on him. I made him fall from the force I excreted on him. Taking advantage of the situation I put my hand on this chin and forced it up. I opened my mouth as wide as I could and sank my teeth on his throat. I took a large chunk of flesh off. I watched as I could hear him trying to speak. All that was coming out was a gurgling sound as the blood came pouring out from his throat. I spit out the flesh and blood on my mouth and took his weapon. It was a revolver.

I looked around and saw James charging at another guy. He looked like a mini wolverine as he charged and jumped to stab the person with his bone claws. I saw a person coming up behind him and took aim with the revolver I had and fired. I recoil lifted my whole arm up and made me take a few steps back, but I hit the person on the right arm. It gave enough time for James to turn around and leap on him with his claws.

Now that he was okay I started to look for Victor. I spotted him stabbing someone with his hands on their chest. He stood up and started walking towards me with blood dripping from his hands.

"You got something on your mouth." He said with a grin. I wiped my mouth and found some piece of flesh that was stuck because of the blood.

"Thanks." I responded with a smile. I don't know if the smile or how I looked right now scared him, but I wanted to make sure he knew I wasn't some gentle little girl.

"Who were these guys? Why come after us?" James asked.

"Well, we did just kill two people. I'm surprised they found out that fast and were able to move that quickly." I said. I wonder if Sir had anything to do with that.

"We need to keep moving." Victor said as he looked around.

"Let's grab some of their stuff. We can use it to trade or protect ourselves." I said looking at the revolver. They both nodded and went to each body looking for anything valuable. I found some more bullets and a short knife. I also took bag pouches to use for storage.

"We need to wash ourselves." I said noticing the blood on our clothes and bodies.

We continued to move east and reached another small lake. It was still dark, so we quickly washed ourselves. We had to keep moving since whoever was looking for us could send more people. We continued going but this time we were walking. It would be too difficult to run full speed in the dark.

Once the sun came up, we picked up our speed. I took lead since I was the fastest. We ran during the day and walked during the nights. We didn't stop. If we did that would mean the people after us could catch up. If they had horses, then they could shorten the gap between us quickly.

"Guys, we need to try not make any tracks for them to follow us." I said when we started walking since the sun went down.

"How do we do that?" James asked.

"Take lighter steps. Try not to disturb the ground too much. Or we can go in separate directions and meet up somewhere to make it confusing." I suggested.

"Let's do all of that." Victor said.

"Let's wait when till the sun comes up." I said and they agreed.

We continued until doing that for several days. I stopped counting after the 12th day. I'm sure by now the people after us either gave up or are far behind us that we have time to plan something.

All three of us were hungry since we haven't stopped but our powers allowed us to basically keep going. As our bodies started to use itself to feed on, our powers would regenerate the damage caused. We were in constant pain, but it was better than fighting a group of people again.

We finally decided to rest when we reached a large lake. I am assuming that this might be the Hudson Bay since it seems endless. Victor and James went out to see if they could grab something to eat while I gather leaves and branches.

I finished grabbing all that I could find and piled it together. I finally had a moment to myself. I wonder if this is what happened originally to James and Victor. No wonder they develop the personalities they have when they grow up. All this constant killing. The scary part is that I don't feel anything when I killed that guy or the dogs. I guess James and Victor must feel the same way.

I looked around and noticed they haven't returned yet. I decided to take this time and focus on the memories Sir gave me.
