The Calm

"Ok, wolf get ready so check all systems before we go and everything else so we can get it fixed now," I suggested, " copy that running systems check now,"  said wolf. Man who knew that I would ever become a super-soldier not even out of high school and now having to rescue my ex-girlfriend. Feels like something out of a movie or something. " All systems are a go but we should refuel our landing rockets before we head out along with our ammo in our belt" wolf said. "Roger that," I said walking out of the room going to my weapons locker to restock. "Wolf what should we carry with us from out of the plane," I asked him, " I would recommend holstering a pistol on our leg holster and our main gun an assault rifle," he said. " ok we will do that and have a rifle attached to the back holster," I said. We got to the weapons locker and got our guns loaded and cleaned, made sure we had extra ammo for all the guns. "Wolf how much time is left," I asked " until when sir" he questioned. "Until dark" I said, " we have an hour cap," he said. Ok so an hour before dark and it takes close to 40 minutes by plane to get to the city and 10 minutes to refuel and do one final check of things, I thought to my self. " you ready to go wolf" I asked, " yes sir lets go refuel and head out" he said. We refueled our landing rockets and go on the carrier and took off towards the city. " Captain," said one of the tail gunners on the carrier with me, I looked at him and he couldn't have been any older than 19 or 20. "What can I do for you," I asked him, he looked out at the ground and back up at me with a sad look in his eyes. "Sir, do you think we will win this war? I mean I know it just started but I want to go home and see my parents. Do you think they are still alive sir?" he asked, "let me ask you this first," I said, "What war have we ever lost?" I said boasting. "But no one has ever attacked us much less started a war here sir" he replied with worry in his voice. I noticed that he was genuinely upset. " Look kid I am going to be honest with you, I don't know if we will win or not but I can promise that if you fight like there is no tomorrow and do everything you possibly can then it increases our chances of winning. I know you will see your parents again son, and yes I would like to believe that they are alive so keep your head up kid. We will make it out of this alive." I told him. "Yes sir," he said, and then he turned back around and we flew for a few minutes in silence. "You didn't say that for the soldier did you?" questioned wolf. "Not exactly but I know I needed to hear that just as much as he did. Even if it was me saying it, I needed to hear it. Well more like convince my self of it." I said, "Thought so," said wolf. We flew the rest of the way there in silence, leaving me to my thoughts which wolf could hear but he didn't say anything, he just let me think. "Sir 20 seconds to drop," said the tail gunner, I noticed his badge marking him as a private. That's why he looked so young and scared I thought, I got up and walked to the door and looked out at the night sky. There were stars that filled the sky and not a single cloud to be seen. It would have been peaceful if I was not about to jump out of a plane into a war zone.10 seconds now,  I thought, "wolf run a systems check one final time," I said. "Running check," he said. 5 seconds. "All systems are good to go," he said, "green light sir," said the private. I looked back at him and he still looked worried but also confident. " good luck kid see you back at base, and you will be alright just remember what we talked about" I said, then I turned around and jumped. The ground was approaching fast as I turned to put my feet towards the ground. "Ready for landing procedures," I said "copy that initiating landing rockets in 20 feet," said wolf. "10 feet..... Launching now" he said as the rockets lit and slowed us down just slightly. "Ground contact in 30 seconds," he said as I grabbed the assault rifle that was hooked to my chest plate. "Contact in 10....5....Now" warned wolf. *Crash* My feet hit the ground and almost immediately I moved to a building next to me. "Wolf scan the area for hostiles," I said. "Sir we have an incoming squad most likely a patrol," he said, " ok can you find me away into the building so we can get to the roof silently we don't want them to know we are here. Not yet it's not dark enough" I said. " Too late a drone spotted us" he warned. "Crap find a way in now" I ordered.
