I stepped out of my car with my backpack slung over one shoulder.
"Nate!" I turned my head towards the familiar voice.
"Oh, hey Leo. What's up?"
"Nothing much." He walked next to me.
"I forgot to tell you, there's no practice today. Coach cancelled it."
"Thanks, then I'll see you later."
...
As I sat down, I saw Melanie walk into the lunchroom with another girl. She looked… Nervous? Her eyes darted around the room as she made her way towards an empty seat in the back.
Suddenly, a table of girls got up and walked towards Melanie and her friend. I recognized one of them. It was Geena, the captain for the cross country team. They giggled and whispered as they sat down next to Melanie and her friend. I saw them talk and burst out into a fit of laughter. I couldn't see Melanie's face since her back was towards me, but I figured she was having a good time.
...
A few minutes later, I glanced over at the table and saw Melanie abruptly standing up and walking out of the lunchroom. Geena and the other girls followed her while the rest held her friend back. Was Melanie okay? What was going on?
"Hold on, I'll be right back." I told Leo who was next to me.
"Alright, don't take too long or else your lunch will be gone." He snickered.
"Just take it, I'm not hungry." I ran towards the doors, following them.
