I shut the door behind me after Melanie stepped into the room. "So," She started as she sat on the bed. "What do you need help with in English?"
I set my backpack down and grabbed my laptop. "Well, there's this essay I have to turn in by next week but I don't know how to finish it,"
"What's the topic?" She asked as I sat next to her.
"It was about what kinds of obstacles we've overcome to be a better person," I explained to her. "I was planning on writing about my mom,"
She delayed for a minute. "Your mom?"
"Yeah, she passed away a few years ago,"
"I'm sorry," She stared at me with an expressionless face. It was as if she was trying to figure something out about me. "Nate, do you have a brother?"
Surprised at the abrupt question, I looked at her. "No, why do you ask?"
She hesitated for a moment and replied, "It's nothing,"
There was an unpleasant awkwardness in the air as I didn't know what to say. She interrupted the silence with a question that got me left speechless.
"You're Nate. Right?" Melanie stared at me with penetrating eyes. I was tempted to let my guard down and tell her everything. I mean, what was there to lose? I stared right back into her eyes.
"What if I'm not?"
