 ''And if you die, I would have to work more till I get myself a new assistant. Better than that, we can sit back and watch how that cunning guy handles it. Let him send his assistant over. If she dies, it's his loss and I can sit back and enjoy the show without suffering any losses.''

Veronica was stupified. She should have known. Such logic can easily stem from this person. 

''Dr. Warner doesn't send Diana around for doing rounds,'' Veronica mumbled grumbly.

''Huh?'' Alex gave her a side eye, "Why not? He is so fussy."

Veronica wanted to bang his head on the opposite wall and tell him that not every doctor treated their assistant like a 24X7 housemaid, unlike him. 

As they stepped inside his office, both Alex and Veronica stopped in their tracks. 

''Dad?" Alex was taken aback when he saw his father leaning back on the edge of his desk, fiddling with the pack of cigarettes he had left there.
