By the time the hour was up it was 5:32am and the pile of drones had been reduced by only ten in that time – most had more severe repairs that needed to be made to them which required him to spend a much longer time on figuring out how to fix them, they also then needed to be tested to ensure that the code was working perfectly. Needless to say, the job of repairing the drones wasn't as enjoyable as he would've liked it to be all things considering, it was easy enough but time consuming.
Standing up after sitting for an hour Haley felt a wave of exhaustion wash over him, tiredly he stretched and heard his bones crack during the process which was unpleasant but the sound forced him to stay awake if only for a few minutes longer.
Slowly he managed to drag himself up the steps to the dining room where the old man was sitting waiting for him patiently, "What took'ya so long? I've been waiting for you to start." He said before greedily grabbing the plate nearest to him, the plate had some toast on it which wasn't yet buttered – next to that was a box of wheat cereal and a couple of bowls with a jug of milk, it was a simple yet calming sort of breakfast in Haley's opinion.
Despite nearly two-thousand years since the 21st Century it could be said that the human races diet didn't evolve alongside their technology as much as one would think – the food was only somewhat healthier and items could be stored for much longer before they had to be disposed of due to these advancements but apart from that everything had remained generally the same, the 'tradition' of preparing breakfast by hand was still quite popular even among the upper-class needless to say of those like Haley and the old man.
Haley took a seat and grabbed himself a bowl before quickly preparing some cereal in it for him to eat, without another word he dug in hungrily only now realising how empty his stomach truly was after so long.
It didn't take long for him to completely clear the bowl and make himself a second, then a third; As Haley was preparing to make his fourth bowl the old man stretched out his hand slowly and took the box of cereal from his hand and placed it back on the table.
"Eating too much and so fast is bad for your body, why don't we have a little talk while we wait for your digestion to catch up huh?" He said with a smile, the smile didn't seem to match his usual demeaner and caused Haley to feel uneasy as if he was staring at a greedy snake.
But not one to argue with good advise he simply nodded and remained quiet, the old man took that as his que to start and began to speak: "My name is James, no last name so don't bother askin', I've been a farmer here for the past thirty years – I was a soldier before that so if you get any ideas you should think twice before crossing me, you hear?" He said with a laugh, "So what about you? Got a name you wanna share?"
Haley took a moment to think before replying, 'I can't use my original anymore, not for the time being anyway, how about… four? In honour of the stupid username that got me into this mess.' He thought that it was quite a good name even if it was just a number.
"Four."
James looked at him sceptically as if waiting to see if he wanted to change his mind but after a few moments of silence he heaved a soft sigh and seemingly gave up, "Four it is then, just call me old man from now on it's what everyone else calls me." He said with a small laugh which he forcefully stopped after seeing Haley not reacting.
He shook his head and Haley could faintly hear him mutter something about young people these days being too serious, 'If this was yesterday then things would be different.' He said a half-apology in his heart to the man.
He didn't know if it was because of his 'choice' or whether having had his body die even if for only a few minutes had effected his mind but his emotions has become more internalised than before, he reacted more in his mind than he did with his actual body which could be a problem with the integration with his body and mind now that he was a 'cyborg' but he couldn't be sure since he had no point of reference after all.
Haley silently began to fill his bowl once more and in response James got up and cleared his plates to the sink, "Your bedroom is upstairs and the 2nd door on the left, the bathroom is the 1st on the left – get some sleep kid." With that he left the room and Haley could hear the sound of the front door open then close as he was left alone inside the house.
He didn't notice the small smile on his face as he began to eat again, 'I guess I was wrong about him, so he wasn't originally such a grouch huh?' He thought, unbeknownst to even himself his impression of James had improved considerably because of that short exchange.
"Burp!" The sound escaped his lips and signalled that it was time for him to stop eating, he didn't even know how much he'd eaten but the box that had been nearly full was at least 3/4ths empty now that he was finished with it.
With an expression of satisfaction and a full stomach he cleaned his bowl at the sink and left it to dry naturally, he noted the distinct lack of a lot of tech beneficial in daily life which made sense considering the lack of a computer that could communicate with the drones in the basement, 'I guess the only place with more recent tech would be the drone control centre but I'd need clearance to enter since they're technically government buildings.'
Before he realised it, he was in the bedroom and was collapsing into a large double bed, the warmth engulfed him as he slowly drifted to sleep silently.
