Olive woke the next day feeling restless and tired. She couldn't get to sleep until early hours of the morning. She held onto the oak railing while going downstairs to the kitchen. 'Please, if god exists make mum be at work already.' She begged while creeping down the last few stairs. She slowly made her way into the kitchen. Her mum was still there. She had her hair in a tight bun and had her work uniform on.it was a white ottoman blouse with a tight knee-length red skirt. She worked in the local bank. When dad passes away her um acted differently. Not exactly mean, but cold, more like her daughter was more of a roommate then a daughter. Another reason Olive went to her diary for shelter. "Did you get rid of that book yet?" Her mother said in the same icy tone as if she couldn't express any other emotion towards the girl.
"Yes, I did, mother." Olive replied in a respectful tone. Usually when she talked she would look her mum in the eye, but she would go back to her diary and explain the things she would see in her eyes. Now she couldn't bring herself to look her mum in her eyes. The only way to describe now what she saw in her eyes was a glazed over cold reflective stare, finding any little thing to criticise her about.
"Your application form for Nelworth college was accepted." She said while cleaning the mess she had made. Olive looked up, a little bit surprised. "They said you had passed your entrance exam with flying colours." Her mum continued. Olive inwardly smiled. Olive tried her hardest and set her sights on only the best of the best for one reason. She wanted to impress her mum, she wanted to make her proud. But when she looked at her mother and realised her face was unchanging, she couldn't help but feel upset. Upset that all those all nighters, and countless hours trying to reach the top were for her mum, wanting at least a smile in return for her efforts. Yet, it was to no avail.
"Start packing your stuff up, you should be ready to move out by the end of next week." Olive stared at the wall next to her mothers back. "Yes mother" she said before starting to go back upstairs. "Have you already eaten?" Her mother questioned. "No I.. I just lost my appetite." She answered honestly before running back up the stair. Tears pricked her eyes... 'No, if she can't even smile to me, she's not worth me crying over!' Olive thought. But she was her mother, and Olive had her limits. Her eyes were dampening, but she stopped any tears from escaping.
She spent the first half of the day slowly packing away some of her belongings. She was a mess of emotions. Some of her wanted to stay while the rest wanted to get up and out of this hell hole. But for some reason Olive thought that her presence was helping her mum get over her fathers death. But if she stayed she wouldn't be able to land a stable job or expand her knowledge. The only decent job in this small secluded town was the bank, and on the few occasions she visited, it looked like they weren't needing to hire anytime soon.
While Olive was thinking her thoughts drifted to Nelworth college. She heard it was the top college nearly anywhere. She passed the so called 'impossible entrance exam' with flying colours. To get in there you had pass the entrance exam, and because of the difficulty of that they would award you a full scholarship. There were other ways to get in as well, you could be awarded a scholarship for your sports abilities or music abilities or traits like that. In short, that school was the best of the best. The only way some other person would get in, was if they were awarded a partial scholarship and paid the rest, or if they were rich or were from a very influential family. She was most definitely not.
Then while she was midst her thoughts, she posed the question, 'Does Nelworth have uniforms?' If they did, she was knee deep in trouble. She couldn't afford a uniform. She glanced at her closet nervously. In there was where she hid her wallet. Two years ago they were robbed, they lost a lot. From then on she started hiding her valuables, now she just hid them out of instinct.
She was about to go get her wallet when she heard a woman laughing flirtatiously Olive froze. Olive and her mother lived in a rather secluded area surrounded by forest. She peeked around the corner of her curtain. It was her mum. She sighed in relief. But she slowly looked back out wondering why she was laughing like that. There was a man next to her! Olive recognises his clothing as the males banking uniform. Olive sprinted down the stairs.
Her mum opened the door and saw Olive running down the stairs. "Olive! Why are you rushing? Oh yeah! Do you know Michael?" Her mum asked loudly. "N-no, I don't think I've meet a Michael before..." Olive answered while trying to think clearly. Why has her mother brought home a man? Se had never done this before. Why start now?
