I Was Too Bored

Yang Yi returned to his cell. Chris was extremely surprised when he saw Yang Yi return to the cell.

"You're back? You didn't die? That's wonderful! Just wonderful!"

Chris crawled up the bed and excitedly patted Yang Yi's shoulder as he laughed, "It's good you're back. You did it! You really did it!"

Yang Yi chuckled and punched Chris's stomach lightly.

Oomph.

Chris bent over and let out a stifled groan. He gave Yang Yi an inconceivable look and asked, "Fuck! Why did you hit me?"

"Your son was about my age, right? Your wife was murdered, right? You plan to seek revenge after you are released, right?"

Yang Yi sneered as he asked the questions and approached Chris. Yang Yi punched Chris again causing him to fell backward onto the bed.

"Tell me, how old are you this year?"

"Forty-five years old."

Yang Yi slapped Chris, "How old?"

"Forty, I'm forty this year!"

Yang Yi ruthlessly slapped him on the face again as he laughed, "How old are you this year?"

"Stop! Don't hit me anymore! I'll talk. Thirty-nine! I'm thirty-nine this year!"

At this point, Yang Yi took a step back and kicked Chris in the face. He then asked again, "How old are you this year?"

Chris looked like he was about to break when he exclaimed, "Twenty-eight! I'm twenty-eight this year! That's the truth. I'm really twenty-eight this year!"

Yang Yi exhaled and snickered, "So tell me, if you're twenty-eight years old this year, how is it possible that your son was about my age?"

Chris covered his face as he replied loudly, "I'm sorry! I shouldn't have lied! I'm sorry!"

Chris looked very calm and seemed deep in thought whenever he was brooding. Others would assume he was reminiscing about something when he looked at them with eyes full of sorrow. Therefore, most people would easily believe whatever he said.

That was why Yang Yi had never doubted what Chris had told him. Yang Yi was furious right now because he had been played by Chris.

Yang Yi always self-professed that he was a genius yet he had been played like a fool by his own cellmate. It was for this reason Yang Yi was furious even though he hadn't lost anything. It was more accurate to say Yang Yi was flustered and embarrassed.

"Speak, what crime did you commit to end up in here?"

Because Yang Yi had killed the Boxing King, Chris wouldn't dare to retaliate regardless of what Yang Yi did to him. Thus, Chris answered obediently, "I was sentenced to ten years for committing fraud."

"Say it! What exactly did you do?"

"I'm in here for financial fraud."

Yang Yi grabbed Chris by the collar and grimly said, "Explain the details for me. Otherwise, I will let you have a taste of my capabilities."

Chris fell on his bed after Yang Yi loosened his grip. He immediately cried out, "I would do anything as long as it got me money. I would scam in any way possible. There was once I masqueraded as a tenant and paid the deposit via a blank check. While waiting for the check to clear, I took the opportunity and went to other prospective tenants and defrauded them of their upfront, rental deposits. There was also the time I investigated the income of some rich people, disguised myself as a tax official, and blackmailed them using tax evasion. That's all I've done."

Yang Yi snickered, "Is that all?"

"That's all!"

Chris said loudly when Yang Yi lifted his hand, "Seriously, that's all!"

Yang Yi slapped Chris ruthlessly and smirked, "Is that all?"

Chris was helpless, "Ok! Ok! There was one more. The scams I mentioned didn't get me much money. So, I planned to pull off a bigger scam. I used up all my savings to give myself a makeover so I could impersonate a top student of an Ivy League university with very bright prospects."

"What was your purpose?"

"My purpose? I wanted to make a large sum of money. I wanted to…"

"I'm not asking what your goal was. I'm asking why you chose to give yourself a makeover."

Chris shrugged as he replied helplessly, "Why give myself a makeover? How was I going to mingle with the upper society otherwise? That was where all the money was. If you want to make a lot of money, of course, there are specific people you need to go to. The scamming effort was about the same yet I didn't make much money from those poor people. Not only that, it was also very risky. If that was the case, why not just scam the wealthy? They would be nice to scam too."

"Good. Please continue."

Chris sighed before he continued, "Actually, you need to wait for the right opportunity when you scam someone. Once the time is right, you strike with precision. So, my plan was first to join the upper society and slowly look for opportunities. The process might take a long time but I just needed to hit the jackpot once and I would be able to enjoy it for the rest of my lifetime."

"Makes sense, continue."

"I successfully joined the upper society but unexpectedly a girl fell in love with me. Her dad was a powerful tycoon. We later started dating and her dad liked me a lot. We were planning to get married and she was already pregnant. Sadly, it was also at that time when my identity was exposed."

Yang Yi chuckled as he said, "You formed a company which had been showcasing good returns. You also managed to scam six million dollars from your girlfriend and her father's social circle. It was just that someone exposed that your company was actually an empty shell and that you were running a Ponzi scheme. Because of that, your soon-to-be father-in-law sent you to prison while your soon-to-be wife left you."

Chris replied in annoyance, "Since you already knew, why are you still asking me?!"

"I'm more concerned about how you got exposed. Your exposure is still a mystery to me because of Whistleblower Protection Act. So, how did you get exposed?"

Chris turned gloomy as he quietly replied, "I had a collaborator. He couldn't stand and he didn't think I deserved the fame and lifestyle I was enjoying. So, he reported me."

"So, it was because there was a dispute over the loot distribution?"

Chris shook his head, "It had nothing to do with how the loot was distributed. The scam was my sole effort and had nothing to do with him. What I got from him was a fake certificate and resume that I paid him twenty thousand dollars for! Because he saw how successful I became after, he demanded three million dollars from me! There was no way I could give him three million dollars if I wanted to maintain the scam. So, I gave him half a million dollars but the bastard still reported me!"

Chris indignantly shook his head, "That's what happened. It was because I collaborated with a jealous bastard with no professional ethics."

Yang Yi said seriously as he nodded, "Why did you deceive me? You're dead if you don't give me a satisfactory answer."

Chris gloomily said in a very soft voice, "I was bored. Extremely bored. It was because I was too bored…"
