Chapter 10

"Stop, there's a darkling close." Angelica whispered as they all paused a couple houses down from where they were going. She took a couple steps forward and cocked her ear to the wind. The three of them walked, slower now, forward a little more as the school came into view. A man with short black hair appeared at the two large door that was the entrance of the building. "That man used a movement skill." Angelica spoke again as they watched the man run inside.

"That must be her father's scout," Damien spoke feeling his hope fly up his throat as he couldn't help but smile.

Damien started to walk forward but Rebecca grabbed his arm making him stop. He looked at her quickly before he followed her eyes. A teenage girl with brown skin and frizzy black hair darted from the entrance. Damien's eyes locked onto her for several heartbeats as a darkling came over the roof of the building and started bounding after her. The girl didn't pause to look behind her as she ran around the corner; the darkling clawing the ground as it went. Damien watched for a long moment before he just started laughing. The girls looked at him with a confused look on their faces.

"How is that funny!? That girl is going to die!" Rebecca demanded sounding upset. Damien looked at her, the smile that was plastered on his face wider than ever.

"I thought that this was going to be hard," Damien laughed as he turned directions and started jogging after the girl.

"What do you mean?" Rebecca spoke as she kept pace with him with ease.

"Well, that's probably her." Damien spoke as he shook his head,

"How can you tell? She looks nothing like the picture of her mother we saw." Angelica asked looking shocked. Damien could only shake his head at that, his lips still tilted upwards. The girl up ahead of them turned and ran down an alleyway.

"That's is true…Oliva said that the queen used magic on her to hide her. Call the other's back. That's her I know it." Damien turned and started off down an alley way as he followed the darkling.

As they rounded the house at the mouth of the alley, Damien felt his stomach drop as he saw the darkling take one large sweep at her. In one swift movement the man that they had seen at the school appeared behind her, wrapping his arms around her middle before he landed on the ground softly. Damien watched the man as he yelled at the girl and she shook her head, yelling right back.

"Go!" Damien yelled at Angelica and Rebecca who darted forward with more speed than he had and jumped next to the man. After another moment the boys appeared in front of the darkling as well, their blades drawn. The darkling, however, didn't notice them as it focused on the girl. Damien pushed his legs to run faster to keep up with his scouts. He skidded to a halt directly in front of the darkling, his scouts spread out behind him.

"Get her out of here!" He shouted at the man. The man looked at him for a long moment.

"Uncle John we can't, this is our problem, we can't just leave them here." The man named John looked from Damien to the girl before he picked her up and jumped into the air "John!" She screamed at him right as they vanished.

Everyone jumped into action the moment she was gone; Ryan and Nathan jumped towards its chest and slammed their daggers into it. Rebecca and Angelica were behind it as they slammed their daggers in its back. The darkling let out a loud scream as it tried to follow the girl and her scout.

"Oh no you don't," Jake muttered as he ran under it and sliced the tendons in its legs causing it to fall forward.

"Hit the vital points before it regenerates!" Damien spoke in a low voice as he drew his sword and jumped forward plunging it into the darkling's chest.

"Don't!" Everyone's head snapped to the side as they saw the girl appear again. "Don't kill it," She screamed. They all looked at her shocked as they stared at her. She looked furious as she glared at them. Where had her scout gone? "If a darkling goes missing do you know what will happen? They will know where this location is and more will show up. Then this entire town will be leveled! You brought this here and now it's time to handle this situation correctly." She snapped right as the scout arrived behind her as he shook his head and turned his back looking down the street.

"What do you expect us to do then?" Damien asked as he crossed his arms and looked at his mate with interest.

"Hold it down," She spoke as she pulled her large baggie hoody off and dropped it on the ground then, she pulled off her long grey and pink arm socks dropping them on the hoody. None of the scouts moved as she crossed her arms and glared at them.

"Nyline, don't do this. You'll just end up hurting yourself." The older scout spoke in a deep voice. She only glanced sideways at him before she threw her long frizzy black hair over her shoulder. Her angry eyes returning to Damien, her arms crossing over her chest.

"Just do it," Damien muttered. Each scout grabbed an arm and Jake stood near its mouth. Damien's eyes were glued to his mate. She took one deep breath in before she walked close to its mouth. It snapped at her and to Damien's surprise she didn't flinch away but simply look at it, determination in her eyes.

"Calm yourself, you found nothing here." She spoke softly as she sat on her ankles and looked down into its eyes. Her hand rose, then it froze for just a moment. The look on her face was that she was preparing herself for something horrendous. Then, shutting her eyes tightly, she pressed her hand against the side of the darklings face.

There was an intake of breath from all of present as the darkling instantly calmed before it looked as if it was sleeping. After a little she withdrew her hand and stood, taking a step back.

"Move away, return home and give your report." Her voice commanded the scouts they stared at her; she shook her head and looked back at the darkling. The ground beneath the darkling turned into a pool of black shadows as it started to sink. The scouts all retreated as the darkling slowly withdrew into its darkness.

"Is it alright to leave it like that?" Damien asked looking at his mate; he couldn't help but smile at her. She was beautiful even if she didn't look a lick like her photo. However, when their eyes finally connected, he only saw her icy cold brown eyes staring at him with her mouth in a thin line. He wasn't sure but he thought that he had never had anyone look at him with so much hatred before.

"It remembers nothing; so, it will not pose a threat. The injuries that you gave it will regenerate before it gets back." She spoke her voice hard as she turned back to the pile of her items on the ground. John crossed his arms as he watched her put her headphones back in.

"What did you do to it?" Damien looked at her, his eyes narrowed.

"I removed its memories of since it got here. You should return to your world before you bring anything else over. There is nothing here for you." She placed her hand on her head as if she was in pain before she looked over at him. Then turned back to her items and picked up her arm warmers.

"Actually, there is something here for me," Damien spoke as he took a couple steps forward. She froze as she stood her back straight and didn't look at him.

"I am not the person you are looking for. You can speak with my uncle John about this." Damien stared at her, of course she was! She turned not looking at him, "I'm going home." She pressed a hand to her head again as if in pain.

"Please wait!" Damien spoke quickly as his hand closed around her arm; it was ice cold but quickly warmth spread from his hand. The girl looked at him for a moment her eyes wide before they turned to slits and she ripped her arm from his grasp.

"Don't touch me!" She screamed before she turned and vanished. Damien stared after her. Had she just used a movement skill?

"Well, your mate is crazier than mine." Nathan started laughing as Rebecca walked over punched him in the shoulder.

"Mate? Does that mean that James and Elizabeth are your parents?" The man called Uncle John spoke as he walked over to them. Damien raised his eyebrow at the scout for a moment. Uncle John looked Damien up and down before he let out a long breath and looked at his scouts.

"That is correct," Damien spoke as he crossed his arms.

"Come on, we will continue this conversation at my house. This is not a discussion for the middle of a street… Nyline is not going to be happy about this." John shook his head as he picked up the discarded hoody and turned. Angelica walked up next to him, her eyes going to his.

"She's not? Isn't it everyone's dream to meet their mate?" Angelica asked looking confused and John smiled down at her.

"Most people, yes. However, Nyline is different than normal people from our world. Once you get to know her, you will understand more." Angelica's confusion deepened as John rustled her hair. Damien watched him go before Jake walked behind him and gave him a soft push which made his feet start moving.
