The Verge of Death

THAT EVENING, ALICE had returned to the Ragan's Estate in a daze. Poor Hartley had attempted to make conversation with her the entire time but alas, Alice wasn't in the mood to entertain. She remained in her own little world, staggering left and right all the way up to the doorstep of the mansion where Wyatt waited.

"Is she alright?" Wyatt had asked Hartley when Alice breezed past him without a word. To that, Hartley merely shrugged before he left.

Tucked in bed that night, Alice had some troubles with falling asleep. She couldn't pick the image out of her head. The scene where the carriage had toppled over the cliff side played incessantly in her mind, reminding her time and time again of life's fragility.
