Some men rushed in to take the howling man to the infirmary. They were doubly surprised to see Guan Ting bruised and in pain. Next to the master, he was the most-feared man in the syndicate, famous for his brutal ways of torture. He was said to have survived numerous encounters and was rumored to have saved Fei Huangjin's father once.
But the image of him now -- face red and bleeding, hands clutching his groin in an attempt to ease the pain -- definitely dampened their adoration for him. Perhaps the master punished him?
The room they left in was draped in silence.
Ying Yue had her eyes fixed on Fei Huangjin, who now had his hands on his trouser pockets with an unguilty look on his face. He turned to her with his lips thinned. "I wanted everyone to know I was serious about you. That's why I set it up."
She let out a sigh. "You really have to learn to discuss things like this with me."
His eyebrows lifted. This woman was really one to talk. "And you have to learn to be more open to me, with less of the disappearing acts."
"Hey!" Her chest tightened and an embarrassed flush filled her cheeks.
Fei Huangjin's deep magnetic laugh filtered through the room, lightening the atmosphere and her mood along with it. But the smile that touched her lips disappeared as soon as it appeared, as she was instantly reminded of the door she had seen earlier.
"Huangjin…" There was a hint of skepticism in her gaze.
He sighed, sitting on the chair that Guan Ting had vacated and pulling her to him gently. She hesitated for a bit, but still ended up sitting on his lap and leaning her head on his shoulder. "What is it?"
She bit her lip and said in a careful voice, "Did you know Ying Shen?"
"Ying Shen?" He pulled back, and the loss of her head support forced her to look up at him. There was obvious confusion on his face. "You mean your brother, Ying Shen?"
She nodded.
"No. Why do you ask?" Although she was a bit troubled with the fact that Ying Shen wasn't someone who could ever have encountered Fei Huangjin, his straightforward answer also made her slightly relieved. She wouldn't know what to do if she caught wind that he was purposely keeping things like this from her.
She flashed him a small smile. "Nothing."
Fei Huangjin sighed. There it was again with keeping things from each other. "Didn't we just talk about being more open?"
"Don't you have work to do?"
"You're changing the topic."
She groaned lightly.
The arms that were wrapped around her tightened, and one finger started tapping against her skin. "When people work with one mind, they can even remove Mount Taishan [1]." He flashed her a proud smile that was begging for praise for what he had said, but Ying Yue only rolled her eyes at him.
"Ying Shen…" she started to say, but then she paused. She wasn't ready to say it.
Fei Huangjin sighed again. "Well, if you're just going to be sitting on me, taking your time, then I might as well give you this." He momentarily released his hold on her as he reached for a small black velvet box in his pocket. He gave her a lopsided smile as he opened it, revealing the very ring she had asked to be customized. The champagne-colored diamond at the center glimmered underneath the light, reflecting an array of colors.
Ying Yue gasped.
"Master Po finished it this morning and I had Guan Ting pick it up."
"Guan Ting?"
"That guy you beat up earlier." He smirked.
Oh. Ohhh. She giggled in amusement. And her eyes sparkled in admiration with the design and workmanship. "It's beautiful."
"Mmm." He reached for her hand, slipping the ring on her fourth finger with ease. It fit perfectly, and the size of the diamond was just right against her slim fingers.
