I don't remember

Song Yinan's hands trembled, and the document slipped from his fingers, landing lightly on the table without a sound.

Ying Yue leaned forward to hold his hands still. "I'm your sister. You're my brother, Ying Shen, and we promised we'd always stick together. You left me with Big Boss, remember? The Jade Circle was after you."

"Wait," his forehead wrinkled and his face was the very definition of confused. "I don't…"

"I was twelve when dad died, remember? You were already around nineteen. You said you'd take care of me. You said we were a team." She pressed on. Her eyes were focused on him, willing him to remember. Surely, if she reminded him of all the things from their past, he'd get his memories back, won't he? "You taught me how to fire a gun. You taught me how to swim. You taught me how to pick locks."

He shook his head, seeming like he was in pain. "I don't remember…"

"It's me, brother!" Her tone started to inch higher, catching the attention of the diners nearby, and causing Ying Yue to glance around briefly before dropping her voice an octave lower. "It's me, your Xiao Yue."

Seconds passed.

And then a minute.

And then a few minutes. Both of them were stuck in silence until Ying Yue withdrew her hold on him and pulled herself back, a bit embarrassed by her aggressive outburst.

"I'm sorry, this must have come as a shock to you." She frowned.

Song Yinan opened and closed his lips before giving out an awkward laugh. "It is quite a shock." After a while, he sighed and offered up a polite smile instead. "I apologize, but I really don't have any memories of my past… Right now, all I know is that I am Song Yinan, and I treat the Song family as the family I belong to. But with regards to what you said… I am grateful to know that I was someone's brother, after all."

"A really good brother," she whispered.

"A really good brother." He echoed. The smile on his lips now seemed genuine, and although she knew he hadn't fully accepted the truth, at least this was a step forward for the both of them.

After that, the atmosphere as they dined didn't seem as intense as it initially was, and the two ended up talking about random funny things: misplaced phones that ended up in the washing machine, typographical errors with names of food inserted within important project proposals, tinkering with the toilet controls to get revenge on another co-worker…

Talking to him seemed easier than she imagined.

Wang Longwei offered a cigarette to Su Jianjun. "Indulge me."

The other man only glanced at the stick briefly before dismissing the invitation with a shake of the head. "You know I don't smoke." His eyes focused on the screen monitor in front of them, following Ying Yue's every move and expression as she talked and ate with his very own special chess piece that went by the name of Song Yinan.

"I've got to say, you've planned this whole thing quite well." Wang Longwei blew out a puff of smoke, making the room hazy. "Is our man in Juyan still cooperating?"

He replied by propping his head against one hand, looking like he was bored already. "Mmm. He has to, if he wants to take over that business."

This answer seemed to please the Jade Circle's master. "So what's next? When can you eliminate the girl?"

Su Jianjun sat back and rubbed at his chin, like he was thinking about it deeply, deciding on whether to tell-all or not. In the end, he decided on the latter. "A good general never tells."

Wang Longwei shrugged. "I heard Fei Huangjin seems to have developed a weakness for the girl. You might as well take out the young master of the Fei's while you're at it." He didn't seem too bothered with Su Jianjun's secretiveness. He was already used to it by now.

Another cloud of smoke was blown into the air, and the room became even hazier. Ying Yue's smiling face on the screen monitors started to blur from their eyes.

"That doesn't sound like a bad idea." Su Jianjun replied.
