Chapter 16

It was do or die.

Vergil took out two charms and summoned his own shikigami.

Two sinister looking insects came out, they had an appearance of a mixture of a human and an ant. They were a little taller than Vergil and they were extremely strong.

Their defence were considered among the top few which made them great against the horde.

Vergil himself activated his own trump card and he rushed fearlessly into the horde.

Vergil shikigamis guarded his side and Vergil himself led the charge, his hands created explosions each time he touched a demon and his injury did not slow his movements down one bit, the numbness was already long over.

He took many demons down and received many injuries in return and the battle was pumping him full of adrenaline preventing him from truly knowing how damaged his body was.

But the enemies before him, the exciting battle, the feeling of life and death one breath away was utterly thrilling!

'Live! Fight! Survive!' Were the words constantly playing in Vergil's head…

At that exact moment…

From the darkness of the horde, Vernon came out of hiding and a fist coated in a flash of light headed towards Vergil.

Vernon who was in an incredible state of concentration easily saw the attack and he countered with his own fist!

Explosion arts Vs Lightning elements.

'Boom!'

Their fists collided and a crushing atmosphere around them just exploded.

What was the result?

Vernon's arm was charred black while Vergil layed on the ground unmoving.

Evan who was still injured by the explosions earlier was watching the whole fight. Seeing their fighting methods was enlightening to say the least.

They didn't fight like what Evan originally thought. In fact it was completely different. He was taught in the army while the greys were protecting the whites, the whites were supposed to deal damage from the backline.

But these two were one man armies who didn't need anyones protection.

Vernon walked over to Vergil's body. Vergil was still alive but he couldn't move a wink all he could do was stare at Vernon.

"I will be handing you over for court martial Vergil. Prepare yourself." Vernon looked extremely sad while saying it as he stared at his former pupil.

Vergil was a genius, everything he was taught he absorbed like a sponge. He was popular, charismatic and powerful and he very quickly rose up the ranks and he earned his five stars.

But would everyone be happy?

The power balance in the army was a delicate and there were many players who had many ties and grudges with each other and Vergil entered the game without a backer.

The result?

Well let's just say that it wasn't pretty, seeing that he betrayed the army.

Vernon did try to help Vergil but he was one voice against many others.

"Sir Vernon Look! The strange gate!"

Woken up from his reminiscing, Vernon quickly turned towards the gate only to see the phasing devotee with Vergil's body.

The area where Vergil's body was last seen was empty and somehow that devotee managed to magically transport Vergil's body way over there secretly within a matter of moments… How was this possible?

The devotee brought Vergil up onto a large table and a strange atmosphere gathered when the devotee started chanting like some lunatic.

Vernon did not know what was going on but he definitely felt that wherever he was doing should be stopped but could he stop it in time? He didn't think so, he was running on fumes and the enemy was still at full strength.

He gritted his teeth and ordered the withdrawal, he had already seen the amount of casualties and it wasn't good.

"Carry the wounded and store the dead. Quickly!"

The order was given out and the rest followed the order. Some with reluctance, some with anger but they followed nonetheless.

"Where do you think you're going?"
