Quillish Wammy, the original Watari, was a famous inventor and philanthropist. He also was the founder of the orphanage known as Wammy house. After L. Lawliet, most well known as L, had his success, Watari took it into his own hands to create a successor to L. His orphanage turned into a place of training for the exceptionally gifted.

Like L all the orphans to come from Wammy house used an alias. The most famous being:

- Near: The youngest in line to succeed L. He eventually took his place in L's absence after death.

- Mello: The eldest in line to be L's successor. He leaves the orphanage soon after learning of L's death and gives the title of 'L' to Near.

Now the original Watari was killed, the family continued to create these intellectual titans from gifted children. The newest Watari (from our story) is the second grandson of the original Watari.

R is without a doubt Wataris best student, and is considered a son to him.
