Awaken

I woke up in a place I have never been to. Looking around I could see the room was small and dark. The bed I was laying in had a frame and raised off the ground. I tried to sit up only for a splitting headache to hit me. I groaned as I held my head. I could hear voices outside the room.

"What is wrong with her? She has been out for days yet you have yet to figure it out." Orpheus was here. I wanted to get to him but couldn't see straight as things seem to spin.

"I told you it's her awaking. I can't just 'fix her' as you keep saying every day. She has to push through it by herself. If I make her wake it would just make things worse for her." I recognized that deep voice though I only heard it once before. Vince continued to lecture Orpheus, "Now go back to Ayane's where the other loudmouth is. l will get you when you can see her." Orpheus mumbled something I couldn't hear as he left.

I tried to call out to him but my voice came out in what couldn't even be called a whisper. My head gave another throb as I tried again to get up. I pushed through it and finally had my feet dangling off the bed.

I was about to push off when Vince entered. "I wouldn't do that if I was you. You will just end up crumpled on the floor. Your body is going through a lot of changes right now. I imagine you're in terrible pain right now for pushing yourself too hard." He moved over to me, picking me up slightly to put me back in a sitting position.

I tried to talk again "I want to see my mate." my words were strained but they came out this time.

Vince shook his head no. "He will just want to remove you from my care and right now you need to be here. Can't have you hurting yourself more. Your stunt at the pits has already pushed your change into overdrive."

I huffed which hurt but I refused to show it. "So how long must I stay in your 'care' as you put it." mocking him like he did Orpheus earlier. "I have never been one to just sit still and do nothing." I watched as Vince messed with some bottles and cups next to me. He was mixing something together. My guess is medicine and it smelled awful.

He turned to me with the stuff. "Now that you're awake maybe two or three days. Your body shut down so you wouldn't feel the worst of you change." He handed me the cup.

I tried not to gag as I downed it."So the back out was my body protecting me, but why would my glowing speed up the change?" I tried to ignore the taste of the medicine now stuck to the walls of my mouth.

"That glow is your beast energy and the more you use it before your first shift the more your inner self awakens. You used so much of it your body went into shock. Now you must deal with the consequences." Vince took the glass and set it on a wooden tray with all the bottles.

So I had awakened my beast a bit too fast, but then why had she spoken to me? Wouldn't that mean she was already awake, just not out yet? As if being called she surfaced "I awoke that day at the lake but at that time I was still unable to reach you." Vince left the room with his tray not noticing my shock.

"So the glow was you reaching out to me," I whispered not wanting Vince to hear me in the other room. He probably would think me crazy if he did.

"Yes, the moment we came here I awoke. Before I slept knowing that I had no place in that world. Transforming there is not possible due to the lack of spirit energy." Her voice was soft and kind of like sunshine after rain. "Now that we are here your body has absorbed it too quickly causing your current state. If you grew up here this would have been much easier on you."

"So spirit energy is how one shifts, but why did Vince say my glowing sped it up instead of it being you trying to communicate with me?" He seems to be some kind of doctor but his facts according to my beast are wrong.

"Dragons are different, we don't function as the others do." she paused as her words sank in. She had said dragon, the very beast my mom had been. "Yes your mother was a dragon and when a dragon has a dragon offspring a part of that dragon is passed on. I am that part and as you grew so did I."

"Basically I inherited you like part of her gene pool. Wait, did you just answer my thoughts before?" I covered my mouth quickly hoping Vince didn't hear my raised voice.

My dragon laughed "Yes I can hear your thoughts. I just wondered how long you would continue to whisper."

I rolled my eyes. Great so my dragon likes to mess with me. "Would have been nice to know. I thought Vince would think me crazy if he heard. Anything else you would like to tell me?" At least now I didn't need to worry about Vince if I just talk in my head. "I wonder if this qualifies as becoming borderline Schizophrenic?"

My dragon growled "Are you implying I am but a figure of your imagination. I will have you know I am perfectly real." she huffed.

I giggled "Yes because having a voice in my head seems perfectly sane? Though at this point I think my sanity is the least of my worries. I think you need to explain how this fast-approaching first shift is going down."
