My Dragon

I pushed through the pain as I hurried to the window knowing there was no time to get to the door. Holding in a scream as another jolt of pain went up my spine I climbed out the window landing with a thump. I wanted to curl into a ball and never move again because with every step a new flash of pain would hit me. I could hear Ranald shouting for me but all I could get out was a scream as I crumbled to the ground.

My dragon gently spoke "Just let go. The more you fight the pain the worse it will get."

"How do I do that when I can barely breathe?" Until now I thought menstrual cramps were the worst. Haha jokes on me because this is fifty times worse.

"Just let the change come with the pain. Focus on where it's coming from and let it come." Her voice was soft but I could feel her passing as if on edge. I tried to do as she said, focusing on the pain that starts at my spine. It eased as I heard a crack. I let out a long breath of relief before moving on to the rest of the pain. When the pain vanished and my sight cleared I watched Ranald dash around the corner to stop dead in his tracks. His mouth hung open as Orpheus and Dad came shouting behind him.

"Where's my daughter? We could hear her screams all the way at my place." Dad Growled before bumping into Orpheus's back as he stopped dead just as Ranald had. Dad pushed him aside and smiled when he saw me. "Well my dear it looks like you finally shifted." I could see a small glimmer of sadness in his eyes. "I got to be honest with you though, I had hoped you would be a fox." I knew why without him saying more as he walked over to me leaving my two dumbfounded mates to gain their composer. Mom had a hard time because she was a dragon and it would probably be just as hard on me. If I was a fox I wouldn't have to worry about the unwanted attention soon to come my way. My Dad placed a hand on my leg. "Your dragon form looks amazing."

I tilted my head side to side to get a look at myself. I was much taller than the trees around me and if that didn't get me noticed my red and gold scales that shimmered in the sunlight would. I stretched my wings and found while the tops were mixed like my body the underneath shimmered like pure gold. Fascinated by them I started to flap my wings gently at first but then harder as I tried to lift myself from the ground.

Dad grabbed my leg laughing as Orpheus and Ranald got knocked to the ground by the large gust of wind. "I think that snapped them out of it."

I looked over to watch as they both tried to get up. I laughed as I finally started to ascend into the air. I couldn't help it with how every time they tried they just fell over again. Once I was above the trees there was only one place I wanted to go. Mirror Falls had the biggest water surface of water that I know of. I took off as my Dad tightened his hold on my leg while cheering like people do on a rollercoaster. Flying felt so good, like when you ride a bike for the first time without the training wheels. Scary at first but then amazing as you feel the rush of air on your face.

I could see the falls now so I dipped down brushing my claws against the surface and splashing dad who was still having the time of his life. I could now see my full form as it glistened off the water's surface. Dad was right, my dragon form is beautiful. I could now see my head. My eyes glowed green and on both sides of my head are horns that swop back around my pointy ears and then beneath them coming to a sharp point halfway along my jaw. I watched as the image smiled.

I gently landed on the water's edge by the cave entrance. My Dad let go of my leg and stepped back to look me in the eyes. "I have not had that much full in years." We both laughed. "By the way dear you may want to get home to your mates. By now they probably came to their senses and are freaking out because you took off without them." I sighed knowing he was right. I held out my leg but Dad shook his head. "I think I will stay here a bit and fish. Been a long time since I have done that here. Normally it's half a day's walk but you cut it down to minutes." I smiled and nodded before stepping back to take off. Time to go see what my mates think of being mated to a dragon.
