Excusing himself from the carriage Arjuna opened the door while it was still moving. Thankfully the carriage was moving at a slower pace sp Arjuna could just simply step off without having to worry about the speed.
Night was approaching and the guards all had torches in their hands as they walked along side the carriage.
A hooded figure jogged over to Arjuna as he too started to follow the carriage in a light jog.
Arjuna let out a small grin
"it looks like Kei wants me to be her teacher"
Alanis crossed her arms and hmphed
"she has a great affinity with the spirits, there are always a few of them around her. The thing is, she can't see them, even when they try to reveal themselves to her, she just can't see them"
Arjuna looked at her in confusion
"then why could I see that little wind spirit?"
Alanis shrugged her shoulders
"Perhaps your eyes have a special ability or have you also have an affinity with spirits. Just not as much as her."
Arjuna laughed, some people were just born with golden spoons in their mouths. He couldn't be jealous of it or else that would be the only thing he could think of.
"so," he asked while walked over to the driver's seat of the carriage. "does she have talent in anything?"
Alanis swung herself up over to the driver's seat. She gave the guard who was driving a glare which made him promptly hand her the reigns. He then jumped off to accompany the rest of the guards.
Alanis leaned back
"she doesn't have enough strength to pull back a bow, nor enough to light a sword or any other weapon. She almost knocked herself out with a staff and she seems to trip with any weapon taller than her like a spear or polearm."
Arjuna nodded, he could see elements of that when he taught her basic fighting skills, but the two of them had managed to overcome those with the patience of Arjuna and the determination of Kei and after a few days she finally learned the basics.
Alanis let out a sigh.
"But while she is still hopeless at almost every form of combat. She has a great affinity with spirits, making her an excellent candidate for being a mage, a spirit one to be exact."
If Arjuna remembered correctly, magic was split into three categories or systems and spirit magic was one of them.
Alanis continued
"spirit mages are extremely rare, and human spirit mages are even rarer, out of 100000 people only 900 would have the capabilities to be a mage and only 1 of those would have the affinity to be a spirit mage.
Arjuna leaned back against the seat and asked Alanis as she directed the carriage onto the right path.
"is spirit magic really that great"
Alanis responded quickly
"of course it is! spirit magic is alive, it's not just a simple fireball, it's a communion with the spirits and it harnesses the power in a much more efficient way than simply just pumping in mana into a circle."
Arjuna argued
"but it needs a spirit to work"
Alanis argued back
"spirits are everywhere, it depends on your ability to communicate with them"
Arjuna laughed and lit up one of the lanterns on the side of the carriage
"is that why you learned their language?"
Alanis nodded
"precisely"
A young childish voice yelled out almost immediately when Alanis finished talking.
"There are spirits around me?"
Her voice was immediately muffled and Hisoka's voice reached the two of their ears.
"I apologize for the young miss's actions, we didn't mean to eavesdrop"
Arjuna let out a light laugh
"don't worry about it Hisoka, its something both of you should have know anyways"
Rei leaned her head through the window of the carriage to look at Arjuna.
"I can become a mage?" she asked excitedly
Arjuna smiled and pat her head
"you can, but must train with Alanis first"
Rei's voice dropped in excitement and she replied with a small "oh" and went back into the carriage.
Arjuna looked at Alanis with suspicious eyes.
"what did you do to her?" he asked leaning his head closer as he stared at Alanis. Alanis avoided his eyes blushing as he leaned closer and closer to her.
"Alright alright," she said pushing Arjuna's face away. She corrected the carriage slightly and gave Arjuna a small explanation.
"I've been trying to get her to see the spirits, the problem is, she doesn't even have a picture of what the spirits are, and no matter how much I try to explain the idea to her. She just doesn't get it"
Kei who realized that she was about to get dissed in frount of Arjuna. Leaned her head out again and yelled back.
"all that she does is tell me to see the spirits, she doesn't give me steps or any descriptions to help me"
Alanis snapped back
"spirits have no form, they are formless, every-changing"
Rei argued back
"then how am I supposed to see them?"
Alanis stopped for a moment caught in her own web of words.
Rei looked at her with a triumphant and smug expression while Alanis glared at her.
Arjuna let out a sigh and raised both of his hands between the two.
"alright both of you, lemme try and help out"
Arjuna turned to Rei. His brown eyes shining with a warm light. His raven black hair reflected the light of the lantern next to him making him seem even more kind and warm than before.
"Rei" he began by pointing out a few leaves fluttering in the wind.
"those leaves, are being flown around by the wind right?"
Rei nodded confused
"The wind is something we can't see, but we know it exists because of its presence. The same thing goes for spirits, don't look for their physical forms but instead, the actions and results that they make in your environment, and as for the formless thing, think of it like water. It fits into whatever it contained in making it not really have a true form, but also having a present form"
A lightbulb went up above Rei's head. Her eyes widened and she let out an
"that makes so much sense!"
Arjuna let out a smile
[Rei has learned a bit about spirits]
Alanis turned and gave Arjuna a look that screamed "how?" How did a human teach about spirits when he himself couldn't even see them.
Arjuna could only shrug his shoulders. Perhaps he had a knack for this sort of thing. His master had said that each of them had innate talents that could be discovered later in their lives. Perhaps this was one of them that he could cultivate in the future.
Alanis's voice cut Arjuna's thought process short
"oh, I think we have arrived"
Arjuna looked in frount to see a large city spread out before them. They were still in a foresty area but through the gaps in the trees, the sight of a large city could be seen sitting in an open pasture.
As they continued to travel down the path the trees in the forest started to slowly receed and instead fenced cobblestone paths could be seen.
It was almost sunset, but not yet. Arjuna could still see bits of blue in the mainly purple and red sky. Alanis urged the carriage forward and they drove towards the gate in the city in frount of them.
The City of twilight. A city surrounded by forest and more trees. A river ran straight through the city cutting it almost completely in half. The city had many districts 4 of them were market districts, two of them in the inner walls and the other two in the outer walls. The lake district in the very center was where the nobles resided. Some of the more famous districts included the sword district and the armorer's borough
There were around 12000 residents ruled by the city lord lady Giorsa, the population was a majority of humans with a few smaller races mixed in. The houses were made in an eastern style though Alanis could see hints of elvish architecture on the buildings in the distance.
Much like the city of Dawn, it was a place named after the special phenomenon that occurred at twilight. The river that ran through the city at twilight would bring about a large group of fireflies. At twilight, there was no need for light, the fireflies flew around the city illuminating it in a beautiful soft yellow glow.
Because of this event, the city of twilight is most active at nightime and it's been know to always have some sort of event happening even at the later hours of the night. The city was a notable merchant city with its four market districts barely keeping up with the large influx of goods coming in. The sword and armorer districts were also fairly well known for creating good gear.
Arjuna could only smile as they drove closer to the city. This was going to be a place he would be extremely familiar with soon.
