The Black Earth and Sky

The sect was simple, past the gateway was a small court yard surrounded by five buildings, each building had smaller gardens to the back. Atom decided to join the black Earth and Sky sect, the old man had set him free and if nothing else, Atom trusted him. Still he thought compared to the Po family this place seemed to be in ruins.

"Is this the sect?" Atom questioned.

"Yes child, in the center is our martial pavilion, to its sides are the refining and inscription halls. Behind me is my residence and behind you is the dormitory." The old man said pointing; "you'll live there."

"Are there many apprentices?" Atom pressed quietly.

"Just one."

"Teachers?" Atom continued baffled by the situation.

"Just me..." the old man laughed as he placed his hand on Atoms shoulder "this old man has been lazy but don't fret I will raise you to be a monster, but first you need to rest."

Reaching into his pocket the old man withdrew a small white pill, "this will thin your blood and provide you with nutrients. Take it and sleep," he said placing the pill in Atoms hand "given your bodies shape you will sleep for quite sometime."

Atom took the pill, in his life this was one of the few acts of kindness ever bestowed upon him. "What shall I call this new master of mine?"

"You can call me Master Lee" The old man said calmly.

Atom bowed respectfully "Master Lee this humble student gives thanks." As Atom began to raise his head he felt a cold sensation rushing through his body.

As if the cold steel of a blade was pressed on his neck a chill shot down his spine. Master Lee spoke clearly as the sharp words caused Atom to mildly hyperventilate - "monsters never bow." Looking over the sect the masters voice carried weight; "my master said if a monster drops its head the villagers are sure to cut at it... monsters never bow..."

The old man walked away clearly upset, but Atom just stood silent for a moment washing himself in the words of the sect founder. 'Monsters never bow.' He thought again and again.
