The groans of the dead woke me up from my nightmare.
I could feel the tears welling up as I could hear the banging against my door caused by my mother. "Breakfast" She somewhat kept track of the time and always told me when it was time to eat.
I stood on my feet and stepped onto the balcony looking at the horde of dead shuffling to my building.
I didnt know how much longer I can live in solitaire, Im still a teenage will I really die like this? I searched my room and managed to find a bag of 4 month old chips "Better then nothing" I quietly opened it and put one into my mouth, I savored it as I watched the dead sway in unison. 'IM LATE' 'TIME TO TAKE MY PILL' 'WORK' One by one they screamed their daily worries and then silence.
I didnt even hear my mom groan anymore, Little did I know it was the calm before the storm..
"WAHHHHHHHH" The cry almost made me drop my food as the horde flew into a frezy smacking into the glass windows on the main floor.
The worst part is that the cry came from the floor above mine. "Crap!" I couldnt let the baby be found by them, I glaced towards the door that my mom started furiously banging and scratching on "LUNCH" She screamed. I closed the balcony door and carefully stood up onto the railing, After freaking out over the height I managed to climb up the balcony. There was childrens toys and chairs. The door was open and the apartment was a mess, Food and beer bottles were strewn across the floor. I rushed to the crib and found a small baby wrapped in a green stripped onesie. I calmed the baby in my arm and tried to look into the bedroom but it was locked. I couldnt even dream of what the childs parents were thinking after all this.. I grabbed what seemed to be the childs diaper bag and filled it with everything usefull. Baby formula,Canned foods, wipes, what remained of their clean water bottles. "I NEED A DRINK" And then the banging started on the front door. I moved faster and grabbed the childs binkie before running to the balcony. When I climbed down I could hear the door break down and the horde that was on the streets found themselves on the 3rd floor of my apartment building. When I found myself steady I was shocked to see my neighbor frantically trying to tell me something. And Then I saw what he was telling me.
I was able to look my mom in the eyes as she stood on the other side of the balcony window, The glass cracked as a red mark appeared on her forehead. Everything seemed calm as I looked at her, The skin around her nails had become a dark grey and her face, You could see almost black veins under her skin. Her eyes almost seemed normal except for the strange grey liquid slowly dripping from her tearducts. They all had it, If that liquid enters your body your done for. It doesnt even have to be more then a drop. My heart dropped as she started smashing her head into the glass, I ran over to the fence closest to my neighbor and tried to hand him the child. But my mother wrapped her arms around my neck, I could hear her teeth as she tried to bite me. I pulled the baby close to me as I fought against her grasp, My neighbor jumped over and managed to pull her off of me and hold her down. "Get to my apartment and ill run to you when i let her go. Be ready to close the door" He whispered and nodded to me. I held the baby tight "Its going to be okay little one" As I climbed over the fence and got in position of the door, "Now!" I heard him jump across and I slammed the door behind him. I expected my mother to follow him but she just stood on our balcony looking into the air. Then I realized that he spoke loud enough for the heard above to get riled up. She was staring at the sounds of the glass breaking and we could see some of the dead land on our balcony, Others just falling.
"Damnit" He mumbled and sat in a old looking chair, His hand pressing down on his neck. "What do we do now" I glanced over at him "You cant stay here, Julie bit me and im not turning into one of those things" I sat on the chair across from him and sat the child on my lap
"Whats your name? I know my mom talked to you but we never offically met"
He sighed and leaned his head back
"It was Reuben. But most called me Robert"
"Then this little one will be called Reuben" He laughed and looked at me
"You're what, 15? You cant take care of a baby. I suggest you return that thing where you found it, He caused all of this trouble. Even my wife is banging on the door and she was deaf!"
I stood and shook my head
"Im not abandoning anybody. I guess we'll find a new place"
"You can stay for the night. But tomorrow its all over" He suddenly started coughing, Coughing up the grey liquid into his hand. "It works fast, Girl. Especially with a bite."
We got settled in for the night,
With Robert locking himself in his own bathroom with the farewell words of us taking the remainder of his food.
