Chapter 15: Lag, Load Balancing, and Looming Weirdness (V0.2)
Ran's personal cultivation was booming. Fueled by the steady Dividend stream and amplified by his Enhanced Comprehension, he smoothly transitioned into Qi Condensation Stage 3 within days of receiving the Combat Awareness skill. Life should have been good.
Except it wasn't entirely. His digital farm was starting to show signs of strain.
While the ~200 QL players were consistent, word of mouth about the hyper-realistic, strangely engaging 'Ascension Heaven' had begun to leak beyond QL's controlled circle. Random gamers, curious cultivators from minor sects who frequented P-Hub's forums, and even a few brave souls downloading directly from the bare-bones website started trickling in. The player count fluctuated, sometimes spiking towards 300 concurrent users.
And Ran's minimalist 'Beginning World v0.1' was not designed for that kind of load.
He started noticing it first through the System interface. Dividend reports became slightly erratic. Server latency warnings flickered occasionally. Then, players started complaining in the game's rudimentary chat channels (which Ran could monitor via his Omni-Console).
Ran frowned. Lag? Vanishing loot? Unacceptable performance? This wasn't just annoying for the players; it threatened the stability of his Dividend income. Unhappy players logged off. Fewer players meant fewer Dividents. Fewer Dividents meant slower progress for him. This simply wouldn't do.
Right, time for some proactive maintenance, Ran decided. Can't have the farm animals getting restless and wandering off.
He accessed the Genesis Void again, the 500 SEU cost feeling less significant now with his steady income. His remaining SEU balance was healthy, accumulated from days of consistent player activity.
[Accessing Genesis Void... Please secure all loose data packets before entry.]
[Remaining SEU: 1850]
The sterile white void materialized around him, along with the familiar blocky interface. This time, however, new options were available, likely unlocked by his own progress or the System's mysterious internal logic. 'World Expansion Tools', 'Advanced Asset Libraries (Tier 2)', 'Atmospheric Qi Density Calibration'.
His goal was simple: improve performance and retain players by giving them more space and things to do. He needed to spread the load.
First, expansion. He used the World Expansion tool, feeding it a significant chunk of Creation Units converted from his SEU reserves.
[Expanding World Grid: 1km x 1km -> 10km x 10km. Cost: 500 CU.]
[Generating Procedural Terrain (Basic Quality - Forests, Plains, Hills)... Cost: 300 CU.]
The 'canvas' below him zoomed out dramatically, revealing a much larger, though still basic, landscape surrounding the original Beginner's Rest zone.
Next, content. He populated the new areas with Tier 2 assets – slightly more impressive trees ('Moderately Interesting Oak'), tougher mobs ('Grumbling Boar-Ox', 'Aggressively Territorial Badger'), new resource nodes ('Glimmering Ore Vein - Low Grade', 'Whisperwind Flowers'). He scattered a few simple points of interest – crumbling ruins, small caves, isolated shrines – each with basic quests or exploration objectives.
[Populating New Zones with Tier 2 Assets & Basic POIs... Cost: 750 CU.]
Finally, he addressed the underlying systems. He used the 'Atmospheric Qi Density Calibration' tool.
Let's dial it up slightly, he thought. Make cultivation practice in-game feel a bit more rewarding, keep them hooked.
[Adjusting Ambient Qi Level: Index 1.0 -> Index 2.0 (Mild Increase). Effect: Enhanced environmental energy resonance, increased passive Qi regeneration for players.]
[Cost: 50 CU.]
As he confirmed the Qi density change, a new, unfamiliar System warning flashed in bright red text.
[SYSTEM WARNING: Ambient Qi Level adjustment detected (Index 2.0). Caution Advised.]
[Increased environmental energy resonance may amplify Reality Index fluctuations and interact unpredictably with latent metaphysical signatures.]
[Analysis: Dormant GODEYE_SEED Signatures within world substrate exhibiting increased resonance activity. Manifestation Potential Elevated: MODERATE.]
[Recommend monitoring Reality Index Stability closely. Or crossing fingers. Your call, Host.]
Ran paused, rereading the warning. GODEYE_SEED Signatures? Manifestation Potential? That sounded… significantly weirder than 'Ectoplasmic Resonance'. Seeds of what, exactly? And 'manifestation' implied things becoming real, which seemed alarming.
He briefly considered rolling back the Qi change, but the lure of better player retention and potentially richer Dividends won out. Besides, the System itself seemed uncertain ('Moderate' potential, 'crossing fingers'). It was probably just another beta quirk, arcane technobabble warning about something unlikely. His priority was stabilizing the server and keeping the Dividends flowing.
Monitor it? Fine. System, flag Reality Index Stability for passive monitoring.
[Passive Monitoring Activated. System will issue vaguely alarming notifications if things go pear-shaped. Ish.]
Satisfied, Ran bundled the changes together.
[Saving World State: Ascension Heaven v0.2. Deploying Update to Live Servers?]
[Estimated Downtime: 5 Minutes (Utilizing Quantum Flux Deployment™ - Patent Pending)]
He confirmed the deployment.
[Deploying Update v0.2... Players will experience brief disconnect.]
Minutes later, players logging back into Ascension Heaven found themselves in a vastly larger world. The lag was gone. New areas beckoned exploration. New monsters promised greater challenges (and hopefully better loot). The subtle increase in ambient Qi made practice feel more rewarding.
Chat channels exploded with activity.
Player count surged almost immediately. Old players returned, new players joined, attracted by the buzz of a major content update. Within hours, the concurrent player count smashed past 500 and kept climbing, reaching into the thousands as word spread like wildfire across gaming forums and cultivator networks.
Ran watched the numbers climb and the Dividend counter spin like a slot machine hitting the jackpot. The energy pouring into him was immense, accelerating his cultivation at an astonishing rate.
V0.2 working as intended, he thought with satisfaction, conveniently pushing the cryptic 'GODEYE_SEED' warning to the back of his mind. Stability achieved. Player base growing. Dividends flooding in. What could possibly go wrong?
