Chapter 68

My smirk worked a little too well in fact. They all charged at me, at once.

Their weapons, the majority being daggers all came, stabbing or slashing in from the different sides. A few though were using swords. I was much more worried about the swords than the daggers.

I tried to take a step back to dodge their simultaneous attack. Then, I had to take another and another. Before I knew it my back was pressed against the wall, and yet again all of their attacks were coming in straight for my head, chest. There were coming in for my whole body!

I could feel a cold sweat forming on my brow, then with a scream, I released the spell that I had been preparing. The domain of fire. Suddenly, the entire pathway became a fiery hell. Well, it did for them, for me, it was rather cosy and warm.

Then I went on the offence, my sword slashing the closest person to me, directly in half. The top half of his body flew off to god knows where, the bottom half collapsed to the ground before being incinerated in the fire of my spell.

His blood that would have normally squirted out and covered us all, was turned into vapour then gas almost instantly. The other nine didn't react to their companion being killed. This didn't bother me much as I almost flew into the next guy, my sword ripping a hole into his chest, as I pulled it out, I sent a fireball straight into the face of the next person.

That left me suddenly with seven to deal with. They had all now regrouped outside of the domain of my spell, annoying me a little. The sudden advantage that I had given, myself was suddenly gone. Yet, this was not the end.

I removed the fire domain and instead conjured a darkness domain up to replace it. The well-lit path which was just lit up a second ago, instead now became so dark that not even a speak of light could be seen coming out of it. They thought, began to send cross bolts into the darkness, these bolts though all seemed to end up near to where I was standing, which worried me a little bit.

Though I thought it was them just being lucky, and waved it off. Little did I know that I was completely wrong and that the nightingales have so feared for their accuracy in crossbows and their top-quality equipment, alongside their information network which made even the next best to it look like a pile of cow dung.

Then I came out of the darkness, sending fireballs to their feet causing them to explode on impact.

Bang! Bang!

The explosion caused the ground to shudder near me a little bit, but near them, it shook violently and sent the five that were closest to it flying even further away from where I was. Then while the other two were still trying to recover and get back to their feet, I made quick work of them with a couple of sword flurries.

Pew!

Hearing the air near my head being ripped apart, I ducked down narrowly avoiding a crossbow bolt. Then I looked up at the five remaining nightingales who had already recovered.

"Fuck. You bastards are tough huh!"

They just looked at me like I was crazy. I had just killed five of them without suffering a scratch and was killing them tough! He must be crazy if he only thought that went through all of their heads.

Then as we stood there in the brief respite that we had given each other, I heard the pounding of boots on the cobble streets. It was the noise of heavily armored soldiers, moving towards us.

"Shit, dam guards are here already!"

In my anger, I did not notice that the nightingales were just as angry as was. They seemed to be more worried and angry than me, not that I noticed it though In my anger.

Then I began to cast the strongest of my spells, I hadn't used it since the mage tournament that I had competed in.

I could feel the dark and fire mana, combining in front of me, into the sword that I desperately wanted. Though to my horror, I noticed that there was simply not enough mana in the air currently to sustain this type. Then remembering what I had done in the tower, I willed my mana forth into the spell so that it could be finished.

It worked!

The dark and fire greatsword soon appeared before me.

The nightingales, all took a step back in shock at what I had made. Then while grasping the hilt with both of my hands, I swung the blade down. It went straight through one of them, the resounding explosion of dirt, fire, and darkness, instantly killed the other four. At least I hoped that it did.

As soon as it impacted the ground, I darted off. Running through the gap that I had made. As I came out of the little path, I ran almost straight into a large group of guards. I froze seeing them just as they did seeing me.

Then I ran off in the complete opposite direction to them. Running through all of the streets, weaving left and right as I dodged through all the various crowds and groups of people. Soon enough I had lost them in full. Taking a breath I finally began to think of a hiding place, which I could use to lay low while everything passed over.

The gates themselves would all but certainly be fully sealed by now, trapping me inside the city. Then as I thought, it came to me like thunder. I should hide where they least would expect it. Inside their camp.

Then I began to walk off, in the direction of the headquarters of the garrison.

Soon enough, after hiding from a few search parties I had arrived at the headquarters. There were only a few guards, standing outside. As I walked past them, I quickly came to know that they did not even know what was going on in the city.

Then as they had already seen me today, I walked back into the building without any trouble. Deciding once I was inside, the best place would be the commander's office, I headed there.

As I opened the door, I found that there was no one inside of his office, which did make sense to me as there was no one outside of his door as well.

Then I had a look around the office, finding nothing I quickly got bored and sat down in the chair behind the desk in which the commander was in earlier.

Then after doing that for a minute, I decided to go through he draws on his desk,

It's not like he will know right?

Opening the top two, on each side, all I found were documents relating to money and the assignment of recruits. Aside from that I also found a lot of other similar documents all relating to the same thing.

There was only one draw left now, the one which was in the center. Pulling it open all I found were some letters. Each one was addressed to various military commanders around the local region by the look of it. It was all about preparing for war against Mocia. As I read on, it seemed like troops and supplies had all been gathered already. They were ready to make an incursion into Monica itself! Alongside that, I found information that detailed the movement of the last few units of rangers all into this region as well. It seems after the demon attack, the rangers had been nearly wiped out.

Then I heard some footsteps coming in the hallway outside of the room. I got up and hid behind the door. So that when it was opened no one would be able to see that I was here. Not a second later the door opened with a squeak.

The commander came walking alone, closing the door behind himself as he did. He didn't notice me at all. At least not until he sat down and looked up, finding a sword against his throat.

Seeing it was me, he relaxed a bit.

"You did a real good job. Not just killing the ambassador, killing ten other what I assume to be nightingales, a score of mercenaries and almost caused a riot within the city itself. For an assassin, you are dammed good with words, and yes you can hide here until the search is other."

Smiling at what he had said, I sat down in the chair opposite him. Just resting my sword against my leg in case anyone had decided to come in and grace us with their unwelcome attendance. The commander noticed this but did not deem to say anything. I guess he just accepted it.
