Chapter 4

I woke up at 5:00 am this morning to get ready for school. The whole time it felt like someone was watching me, waiting for me to let my guard down. I think it might have something to do with that shadow thing last night, but I'm not entirely sure.

I found my way to my first period without much difficulty, but I was still a minute late. My teacher didn't mind my tardiness, because she knew that I was new. I finished my math assignment very easily, it was the fire magic that was difficult. I had trouble with magic all day, it's so exhausting. I made it back to my dorm and immediately I felt an evil presence, I shook away the feeling and walked inside.

"How did your first day go? How do you feel? Did you have fun? Should we celebrate? I think we should celebrate!" Melanie said while jumping up and down. "Sorry, Melanie ate some magical candy that makes you super hyper." Max explained. "Oh, well the normal part of my classes was extremely easy, but the magic was exhausting." I said with a yawn. "That's what magic does. Do you need to sleep? Do you need some caffeine? How about coffee? Do you need to sit down? You should sit down." Melanie said, still bouncing up and down. "Melanie slow down one question at a time." I said. I turned to Max "How long does this hyperness last." "About another thirty minutes maybe." he said with a sigh. "Oh, great."

"I'm gonna do my homework now. I'll see you guys later." I walked in my room and realized I still haven't charged any of my electronics. I put my phone on the charger and waited for it to power on. I had 64 miss calls and over 50 text messages. Most of them were from my parents. Some were from my friends, I even had some from kids I don't even like. I texted my friends reassuring them that I was okay. I told them I had to move and that I had lost my phone charger so I couldn't talk to anyone. I apologized for scaring them so much and somehow they forgave me.

My homework was really simple, it only took me 15 minutes to complete. When I was done I helped Max cook dinner again. Melanie finally calmed down, and David came home from wherever he was. We ate dinner, did chores, then we all went to bed.

I tossed and turned most of the night, and got about four hours of sleep. The rest of the week was the same as Monday, exhausting and difficult. I was grateful when the weekend came, the weekend meant I got to have a break.

"We should do something this weekend." David said, sounding hopeful. "Like what?" I asked. "I don't know, just something fun." he said. "There's a party going on at one of my friend's dorms." Melanie offered. "You think they would allow us all to come?" Max asked. "I'm sure I could convince them, after all, they want to meet the only student here with the ability to control light." she said just before she glanced at me. "Wait, I'm the only student who has the power to control light? Are you serious?!" I asked in disbelief. "Yep." Melanie said with a smile. "So, are we all up for the party?" she asked. We all nodded in agreement. "Good I'll see what I can do."

A few hours later she told us we were all invited. We all started getting ready. Melanie came in to help me decide what to wear. "You should wear something that will impress Max." she said. "Why?" "Oh come on Samantha, we've all seen the way he looks at you. It's obvious that he likes you." "It is?" I asked. "Yes, besides don't you like him too?" she asked quietly. I blushed "Yeah, I really do like him." "I knew it, now finish getting ready we have a party to get to."

I decided to wear a navy blue dress with rhinestones on it. The dress went down one inch past my fingertips, making it easy for dancing. I curled my hair and put on one of my mother's necklaces.  I walked out and everyone stared at me with awe. "You, you look beautiful." Max said. "Thank you." I said blushing. "You look great too." I said. He was wearing a black suit, and he looked absolutely breathtaking in it.

"Are we ready to go?" David asked. "Yeah, lets get going we can take my car." Max said. We all piled into Max's car and drove 15 minutes to the party. When we got there we were greeted by a short native american girl. "Hey Melanie, and Melanie's friends." she said. "Come on in." We entered their dorm, there were about 50-60 people around our age in here. "So, your Samantha right?" the native american girl asked. "Yeah, are you the host of this party?" "Yep, my name is Mandy by the way." she said with a smile. "Nice to meet you Mandy." "You too, I'll see you guys later."

David went to the food bar, Melanie went to go mingle with people, and Max went outside for some fresh air. I decided to join David. "Hi David." He jumped a little, "Oh hey Samantha, how are ya doing?" I smiled, "I'm good, what about you?" "I'm good." "Oh, good." "Is something on your mind Samantha?" he asked. "Do you think Max likes me?" "I thought it was obvious that he did." "Melanie said it was obvious too. Am I the only one that didn't notice?" "I guess so, but the real question is, do you like him too?" "Yeah, I just don't know how to tell him."

"Well, if you like him and he likes you, maybe you should just ask him out." he said. "I don't know. I'll figure it out." I said with a sigh.
