Chapter 25

"Alright follow me, I'll take you to get your stuff."

Ella smiled but it was obvious that she was forcing it a little bit, there was a hint of sadness in her voice. Although she also believed Ash deserved it, they had known each other for years and she couldn't help but pity her.

"Let's go."

Sam smiled back at her and followed behind her, they didn't know each other that well so he didn't know what to say and felt a little bit awkward so he silently walked next to her.

"You're my superior now."

"Huh?"

Sam was surprised by her sudden words, he tried to understand what she was saying but he couldn't, he looked at her with confusion in his eyes which made her laugh lightly.

"You have been promoted to the grade of Sergeant, there aren't a lot of people in the camp who haven't heard about it."

The same confused look stayed in Sam's eyes, he was genuinely curious about why he was promoted to sergeant, most sergeants could beat a grade three beast already as they were grade 4 evolvers for the vast majority and although he knew that he was valued for his potential and not his immediate strength that was still a weird thing.

"I think it's kind of a favor they are doing you while expecting you to return it one day, they believe you'll get strong enough to take Moryl into the ranks of the strongest planets."

Sam thought about it and felt like refusing, he didn't want to be tied to the army especially after what he saw today, right now he just wanted to use them to get stronger and richer since they were the ones with the access to the hunting grounds.

Hunting grounds were just like Tunger moon, places that had a big population of beasts that you could hunt to hone your fighting ability, to gather cores used to evolve or to get beast materials that are extremely useful to make weapons and armors and the only people in Moryl who could go to Tunger moon were the military and the nobles, since Sam wasn't a noble he had to stay in the military, for now at least. When he got rich enough buying a small spaceship wasn't anything hard to do and he would be able to travel to other hunting grounds.

Also he was almost certain that instead of a "favor" it was more of a leash, they were trying to rope him in and to keep him there which Sam didn't want at all as this idea conflicted with his future plans.

"Can I refuse that promotion ?"

Ella looked at him with wide eyes and stuttered:

"R-refuse?!"

She had been in the military for years already and she was only a corporal, she had tried so hard to climb the ranks and this young man just said he wanted to refuse such a huge promotion ? It was a leap over 3 positions after all !

"Why?"

She stared into his eyes and asked, of course if he wanted to refuse he should have to have a satisfactory reason or else she decided she would try to convince him, in her eyes there were no cons to being a sergeant in the army but it was different in his perspective.

"I don't want to be tied up to the army, I want to keep my freedom and as a normal soldier I can resign anytime but a sergeant knows too much military secrets so he can't resign that easily."

Ella had a thoughtful expression, she looked at Sam and felt like he definitely wasn't fit to be in the army, most people in the army had already given up on their freedom, especially in Moryl where there were stricter rules than in most other armies.

"You do you, you can go see the general yourself to refuse it. It was his decision after all."

When she said that they had already walked back to the warehouse, the short travel that took 2 minutes in the flying ambulance took them a long 20 minutes by foot, they walked by training grounds, gymnasiums, housings, parks and tons of different things that made it seem as if they weren't in a military base but in a classic city.

Ella pushed the door to the warehouse and as expected it was still empty, with a vocal command she turned the lights on and Sam could finally see what was inside, rows after rows of shelves full of different sized packages. There must have been at least a few millions of them, although there was no one working there Ella walked to a small room on the side and checked something on a computer.

After awhile she walked back out and went to a huge 10 meters high shelf, next to it was a rolling staircase on wheels that she pulled and walked up on, she grabbed a big package that she carried as easily as if it was empty and walked down the stairs. Looking at her being so leisurely Sam wondered if she didn't get the wrong package, there was supposed to be a whole midnight cat inside !

"Here it is, you should check the content when you get back but I don't believe someone would dare steal from a sergeant anyway."

She winked playfully and laughed, she was obviously teasing him and Sam only smiled wryly, he guessed this "sergeant" name was going to follow him for awhile.

[The core is the most important part, ask her if it's inside. We'll lose time if it isn't and we will have to come back.]

Mechy said suddenly.

"Uhm... Ella, the core is also inside right ?"

"Yeah it should be... what do you need it for ? You can't use it until you're a grade three evolver, I think selling it to the army would be the best thing to do now."

Although grade three beast cores weren't rare there were always new evolvers who needed them and so the military bought them for a good price, since Sam was only a grade one evolver he didn't have any use for it as it was too potent, that was why Ella asked him.

"Uhm... I have my reasons, I'll be leaving now. See you."

Sam smiled and left like a gust of wind, he didn't want to answer anymore questions so he excused himself before it turned awkward. He was also excited to work on his first ever piece of equipment and ran back to the workshop even though the sun was already setting, he was planning to spend the next night working on it.
