Chapter 36: Revisiting 'Nightmare' (Part Ten)

She looked up, crying and laughing at the same time, a laugh filled with irony.

Heaven really knew how to toy with people, what was all this?

She had been defiled by a strange man, forced to comply time after time, her body sullied, and now she had to witness that Jingfeng was unfaithful as well.

Was this to comfort her, or to punish her?

It was truly ironic.

"An'an."

Ji Jingfeng had followed her. He stopped at the edge of the fountain, hesitated for a moment, then continued forward, walking towards Ji Anning.

"Don't come any closer..." Ji Anning turned around, saw Ji Jingfeng approaching, and stepped back, "Let me be alone for a while, don't come any closer."

For the first time, she felt that fate had been truly unfair to her.

The Jingfeng who once saved her life--she had made up her mind to be by his side for a lifetime, but he didn't seem to appreciate it.

Was it really only because she had a fatal effect on him that he stayed with her superficially?

Seeing his intimacy with Bai Guo, it definitely wasn't the start of their relationship.

He and Bai Guo had also grown up together; they were childhood friends. If they were together, they could be considered childhood sweethearts.

And she, in the Ji Family, had always been 'a medicine,' a superstitious remedy a fortune teller claimed could save Ji Jingfeng.

In fact, she was clear about all of this, including the fact that Jingfeng's act of saving her life was most likely because of this reason.

Yet, she felt a sudden unwillingness, resenting that Heaven treated her this way, that she was so mistreated.

One moment she was being assaulted blindly, and the very next she ran into her childhood sweetheart fiancé cheating with another woman.

And yet she felt she had no ground, no position, no right to blame anyone, and not even the face to be angry.

Wasn't this a punishment?

Ji Anning retreated to the center of the fountain, leaning against the rockery, with no place to go back to, she bent down, squatted, and hugged her knees as she wept bitterly.

This time, the arrogant boy's mocking and contemptuous words didn't work at all.

She only wanted to cry, to have a thorough cry, and to shed all the tears she had held back over the years.

People often say, cry it out... it will be better once you've cried.

"An'an..." Ji Jingfeng's footsteps drew near slowly.

He looked at Ji Anning and called her softly, his tone and gaze filled with guilt and apology.

Ji Anning looked up, her face a blend of tears and water, her vision blurred. She could only see Ji Jingfeng standing tall before her, she couldn't see his face clearly, as if she never really had.

She cried and said, "Jingfeng, just go, let me be alone for a while, I don't want to see you right now."

It was not just him she didn't want to see, she didn't want to see anyone at the moment.

Hearing this, Ji Jingfeng's hands at his sides clenched into tight fists. He wanted to take another step forward, but Ji Anning's attitude made him dare not move any closer.

He was afraid she would run away again, afraid she would just run straight home.

His mother might feel sorry for him, and in the end, she would probably forgive him, but the grandfather wasn't so easy to speak to, and it would certainly affect Bai Guo.

Thinking of this, Ji Jingfeng bent down slightly, trying to get a little closer to Ji Anning, "You'll get sick like this."

Ji Anning bowed her head, ignoring him, her shoulders shaking as she sobbed.

Seeing she wasn't averse, Ji Jingfeng attempted to reach out to pull her, "Let's find a place for you to change your clothes, and let me explain, okay?"

But before his hand could touch Ji Anning's arm, she suddenly extended her hand and pushed his away, "I really don't need your explanation, you don't actually have to explain anything to me."
