(I hope you enjoy this first chapter!)
It wasn't very out of the ordinary. Just a kind gesture. At least that's what I told myself. I didn't think it would lead to a friendship, much less a relationship, but I suppose I thought wrong. At first, it just just a regular day. I woke up, ate breakfast, got dressed in my uniform, and said goodbye to my parents before leaving for work. I checked the weather on the way out and it said there wasn't going to be any rain or thunder this week. Maybe I was checking a different city? I have no idea, but the next thing I know, is it's pouring down rain while I'm waiting for the bus to come!
Where I live rain is quite popular, so I can't say I was that surprised. I'm just mad at myself for not coming prepared. I'm getting hundreds of texts, but I can't look at them since I'm busy covering my phone so it doesn't get damaged by the water. My hair is soaked and it slowly went from a light pink to magenta. My uniform is totally ruined and I'm definitely going to have to get a new one.
When the bus finally came I hurried on and grabbed hold of a pole to keep my balance as we moved. I pulled my phone out and checked my messages. A few were from the people in my parents' apartment asking if I was okay because of the rain, others were from group chats me and my friends have, nothing from my brother or sister though. Sigh.
"Damn those two." I muttered.
I turned my phone off and looked around. The streets were empty and hardly anyone was on the bus, except... standing right across from me there's a man around my age looking at something on his phone. He has black hair- or at least it looks like it. I couldn't tell if it was naturally black or it was brown turned into black because of the rain. He was wearing a very professional uniform that had something scribbled across the front. He was wearing black pants and what looked like black tap dance shoes.
"Is everything alright?" He asked
He glanced at me then returned back to his phone. His eyes were a bright, beautiful green, but somehow they looked very cold and sent a shiver down my spine. I quickly looked away and stared out the window.
"Yeah I'm okay." I murmured.
Awkward silence followed and finally, I decided to reply to all the messages I received. Little did I know, he was looking over my shoulder while I was responding to all the messages from my neighbors. After telling everyone I was perfectly fine I turned my phone off and looked out the window to witness all the stores and lights pass by. When we reached my stop the man got off with me. He called out to me and handed me an umbrella.
"You need it more than I do. Take it so your friends don't worry as much."
I took the umbrella and opened it, I put it over my head to shield myself from the rain. I looked up at the man and smiled.
"Thank you, sir." I said.
"Yeah. You can keep it as well. I don't need it anymore." He responded.
He walked away without looking back, I watched him disappear into a game store across the street.
I walked into the small café directly across from the game store. There were so many people waiting in line to get their orders, I didn't have time to change into a new uniform. My coworkers were caught up making orders so we didn't get time to say hi or talk to each other. When everything calmed down we all sat at a table and talked about our weekends whenever someone came through the door we'd take turns going to take orders and making them.
A group of people dressed in uniforms came through the door when it was my turn. I got up and walked over to the register.
"Hi! May I take your order?" I asked.
I'm very cheerful at work which is mainly why I'm always admired by my coworkers and customers, but these people did seem to notice at all and kept talking as if I wasn't even there.
"Hello? The young lady just asked a question. At least have the decency to answer." A voice responded.
I smiled, nervously as each one of them gave me dirty looks. They each ordered coffee with a blueberry muffin, which was hard to tell because of their thick Australian accents. They obviously weren't from around here. The mysterious voice in the back had to translate for me, making the people even more furious with me. I glanced at the window while taking the order and saw the rain started to come down harder. When I looked back I saw the familiar black hair and green eyes of the man from earlier today. I took a step back, surprised. He towered over me, his cold eyes staring at me.
"I don't know what to order. What's your favorite thing to drink here?" He asked me.
"W-well I personally like the Carefree Cotton Candy beverage but I'm the only one that ever drinks it so you probably wouldn't like it." I responded.
I quickly looked back to the screen that was recording their order. I couldn't look at him without blushing. I heard my coworkers whispering in the background and one of them named Crystal came over.
"I'll take over, you go ahead and start making the order." She offered.
I handed the tablet over to her and headed to the back to make the coffee. I could here Crystal advertising to the group of people and managed to persuade them to buy an extra cup of coffee for half the regular price.
"Alright so then that's four cups of our original coffee, three blueberry muffins, and a Carefree Cotton Candy?" Crystal asked.
"Yes, thank you." Said the man.
I smiled to myself and thought about how much they're going to regret ordering the Carefree Cotton Candy. Making the drinks hasn't always been my forte, but it isn't that hard. I had the Carefree Cotton Candy drink done in half the time it took me to make the coffee. I grabbed the muffins from the fresh batch Crystal had made during the chaotic morning. I carried the tray out and went over to the table the business people had gone and sat at.
"Okay, but the problem isn't the servers it's the connection." One said.
"The whole game is shut down. There's no way it's just a connection problem. One of the servers has to be corrupt." Another argued.
"Maybe it's neither." I interrupted, "if a whole game is shut down I'm going to guess it's just a system update. There's only one hacker in this world capable of shutting a game down and I'll assure you they hate that game you're playing."
They all stared at me in silence. I placed down their drinks as if nothing was wrong and rushed back to sit at our table. I sat down, put my head on the table, and put my arms around it.
"Jeez that was harsh. Normally people love your enthusiasm." whispered a boy named Ferne.
"Yeah. Normally." I said while I looked up and blew a strand of hair out of my face.
"Don't let it get you down. We'll get the rest of the customers today." Crystal offered.
"Ha you wish!" I joked, sitting up straight. "I want that pay check just as much as you do."
The rest of the day went smoothly, the people in the business suits didn't leave until closing. But whenever they needed something someone else would offer to go take their order. And that man hated the Carefree Cotton Candy, but just to be supportive ordered it again, which I thought was super nice. I cleaned up at the end of the day. I was also the last one to leave, so I had to lock the doors. Ferne gave me his spare jacket for the rain, even though I still had the umbrella. I hopped on the train when it had arrived, but right behind me was the man. I sat in one of the seats and to my surprise he sat across from me and stared at me.
"So it seems I've run into you quite a few times today." He said after a long moment of silence. "Sorry about my coworkers. They're new to the business and don't know how to behave."
"Oh that's alright. Sorry you had to translate I could have just called my friend Hazel over to help me translate." I responded, waving it off.
"You refer to your coworkers as friends? You truly are a weird girl.." He said, glancing at his phone. "So what's your name then?"
"Well of course I think of them as my friends. We all get along very well and we've been working together for over 3 years in the café." I told him. "And my name's Kokoah."
"What a unique name." He said reaching for his phone and standing up. "My name's Hunter. Hope to see you again another day, Ms. Kokoah."
He started walking towards the door and got off the bus. I looked out the window and saw a bunch of mansions surrounding us.
"Wow.. he's rich." I thought.
About an hour later I was finally able to make it home. I checked on my parents, who were already asleep, then headed to my room. I kicked off my shoes and looked in the mirror in the restroom connected to my room. The person I saw before me had long, pink hair put into a braid that hung on off their shoulder. She has brown eyes with black tiger-like stripes spread across. She had a perfect smile and soft lips. It looked like she had super soft skin. She looked as if she was a female model. But it once the makeup was gone, all that remained was her tiger-like eyes and pink hair. Everything else vanished and so did the "female model" dreams she had.
Sadly, I brushed my teeth, then turned off the running water from the sink and walked over to my desk where my laptop was charging. I unplugged it and logged onto a new game.
"This is why you shouldn't mess with the most skilled hacker in the world, kids." I mumbled.
I played the game a bit and didn't understand why people enjoyed the game so much. But, nonetheless, I hacked into the server commands in less than 5 seconds, it was pretty weak for such a popular game, and there had being quite a few hackers before me. But, none of them could match my skill. I shut down the entire game for another 72 hours, made sure no one could change the command, then logged off when everything was complete.
"Bed time." I said.
I changed into my pajamas and hung up my new uniform for the morning. I put Hunter's umbrella and Ferne's jacket next to the uniform so I could return them in the morning. I took out the ponytail holding the braid together, allowing my hair to unfold and curl. I jumped into bed and went to sleep without another thought.
