Sharp Wind

The sun occasionally peeks through the clouds, providing us with a temporary warmth throughout this chilly winter morning. The snow drifts down, kissing our cheeks with it's piercing beauty. The streets aren't too crowded today, and the number of couples I've seen walking by has reached a new high compared to the entire year so far.

Adelle takes the lead as we pass by a group of rowdy boys talking about anime and who can beat Goku. One genuinely believes that Gon from Hunter X Hunter can beat him without any problems. The lights and beautiful decor of the coffee shop promptly come into view as we turn a corner. It's a wooden cabin aesthetic, little log stools stand by the long windows and cozy plaid blankets lay atop many of the wooden tables throughout the shop.

Adelle holds the door open for me as she continues to talk to me about finding a new job and thinking about working at Sport Chek. "It would also be nice since I'll be able to get away from Janice, though I'm mainly intrigued by the higher pay than my current job."

We both step inside and are immediately entranced by the scent of wood, a log fire, freshly made coffee, and warmth. It truly is almost like a whole 'nother world. "When the hell did this place get here?" I ask her as we gaze at the chalk and blackboard menu. "I don't remember seeing it here before."

"That's because they opened last month," She grins at me then turns back to the menu. "It immediately became my favourite place the second I stepped inside, and I've only been here one time before with my brother."

"So you're close with your siblings?" I ask with a soft laugh.

"Sometimes," She giggles and we take a step forward in the line, it's short so I really should decide on what I want already. "Our relationship was like a rollercoaster growing up. We were close as kids, played together, had the same friends and all that. Then once he became a teenager and I, a preteen, we used to fight every hour of every day. We'd even get into physical brawls a lot too. But after some time, we've both become pretty close again, we even have the same online friend group and I'm even friends with a few of his high school friends."

"I wonder what it'd be like for me to have a sibling," I mumble and finally focus on what to order. The sweets here are huge, and they even serve the drinks in actual mugs instead of to-go cups. Though there are also a few to-go cups as well.

"I bet you'd be the more accomplished sibling," She chuckles and we walk up to order. The barista is wearing a red apron with a cute little log fire on it. He has short brown hair and his dark skin is complimented nicely by the lighting.

"Good morning, ladies," He grins, his voice is deep and relaxing. His name tag says, 'Daniel.' "Nice weather huh?"

We both giggle, "Absolutely amazing."

He smiles wider, his teeth are pearly white and perfect. "What may I get you both today?"

"I'll have the dark mocha topped with whipped cream and cocoa powder, and a chocolate chip cookie," Adelle orders then glances over to me with an uplifting smile.

"Um, I-I'll have the dark hot chocolate with whipped cream and cinnamon, a triple chocolate cookie, and an M&M cookie," I finish ordering and he smiles as he taps our orders into the machine. Adelle takes her card out just as I reach to take out some of my cash. "I can pay."

"Nah, I invited you so I'll pay," She smiles and hands the guy her card before I can give him the cash. "Don't worry, you can get the next one."

I slide my cash back into my wallet and laugh a bit, "We go car shopping."

She and the guy break into laughter for a moment, "Sounds like a plan." Daniel hands Adelle back her card and we peer around the shop for a good place to sit. There's a sofa and some sofa chairs lined around the fireplace, and other than a girl working on her laptop in one of the chairs, that area is pretty much empty.

We go to take some seats on the sofa in front of the fire as Daniel gets to work on our drinks. Adelle takes off her woolen blue toque, allowing her long brown hair to flow past her loose shirt as she takes off her winter coat and tosses it onto the couch. The girl on her laptop glances at us then back to her screen as she sips on what appears to be a black coffee.

"So you and Knox really aren't dating?" The fire crackles as Adelle asks me, and my nerves seem to dull as I sit back on the cozy sofa, my body sinking into the seats.

"No, no we're not," I shake my head, listening to the machines work at our beverages and another worker put our baked goods onto some plates and the triple chocolate cookie in a little paper pouch. "He was just comforting me since I'm on my period so I'm all emotional and stuff."

"Aww, you can tell him about that stuff?" Her voice squeaks and even the girl with the laptop smiles a bit. "Now that's an amazing relationship. Especially since some teenage boys are still ignorant about a lot of feminine stuff. So it's pretty rare to find someone that can actually comfort you about that."

"He's never been negative towards me about my female stuff," I grin, staring down at the glorious fire. "Even when I started my first period he immediately asked his sister and mother if I was going to be okay." My face burns a bit, but I choose to ignore it. "In fact, I started my first period about a week or two after him and I became friends. So that just proves how mature he really is."

"You know," She smirks. "You two really would make a good couple."

I shake my head and calmly respond with, "He and I are best friends, besides, I am different as a friend compared to a girlfriend."

She shrugs, "Yeah, that makes sense."

Our drinks and sweets are set on the counter and Daniel calls out, "Adelle?"

At the same time we both stand up and get our order. Our drinks look addicting and filled to the brim. "Thank you," I smile to him as I lift up the tray up, noticing a little paper under my cup. I'll see what it is after I put the tray down.

We set the tray down and take our plates off of it, Adelle quickly brings it back to the counter then takes a seat back onto the sofa. "But I still just think that you two do get along really well."

I take a seat next to her, holding the folded paper in my palms. "I just think it'd be best for him and I to remain as best friends, besides, I wouldn't want to risk losing him because of a bad breakup."

"I guess that's fair," She shrugs and takes a sip of her mocha.

While she's distracted, I unfold the little paper. 'Hey, you're pretty cute <3 6136661111.' His number? Well, I guess that he does seem to be pretty nice. Glancing over to the counter, his smile widens, though he doesn't look at me directly as he works on making a cup of tea.

"What's that?" Adelle asks, setting down her beverage. Her eyes lower before I could think of a response and she reads it. She smirks, "Looks like you have a future boyfriend."

"I don't even know him," I roll my eyes, contemplating on if I should text him now or later.

"No, but you can get to know him over time," She shrugs, raising a coy brow at me. "Besides, at least you already know his intentions."

My mind races, focusing on everything, even the fire. "Yeah. Yeah I guess you're right."
