I was so close. By now my fingers had turned white and red. Just a bit more pulling. The ropes felt itchy, and it didn't help that the only light was provided by stars and the moon.
I had a pretty great day in this world. Walked how far with a headache, got knocked unconscious, and found myself tied to a tree. How wonderful.
Oh my- yes! Yes! I had managed to wiggle my fingers out of the rope. With a quiet cry of satisfaction, I used my free hand to pick up the sharpest rock within my radius and used it to cut my other hand free.
My legs were next. I was not as careful this time, as I made a cut on my left leg in the process. That didn't matter, though. I was free. Now I just had to escape.
The hammer was sitting in the same spot I had left it hours ago. It was decided that I would grab that last. First of all, it wasn't going anywhere without me. Second of all, I was just a tad bit nervous to get so close to the cottage. The window was still broken, so I could be heard easily.
A metal pail was sitting over by the blackberry bush. That many blackberries would sustain me for a while. Now I just needed water. The man had gotten water from somewhere nearby. I wandered around the cottage looking for a pond or a-well! A well sat behind the cottage. It looked clean. I sent the bucket down the well and pulled it back up to see it full of water. The water was very cold, so I didn't hesitate to take a drink. Afterwards, I untied the pail from its rope.
There was nothing else to do but get the hammer. I got on my hands and knees and crawled towards the cottage. Once I got close enough and I felt my heart was going to break from my chest, I reached out and snatched the hammer.
Any sane person would have left right away. However, I couldn't help but peak in the broken window. I rose my head slowly until I was just barely looking in the window. My eyes widened and I turned to run into the woods. The man sat on the bed, sharpening a very large knife.
Huffing and gasping, I dove behind a bush. He really was going to kill me. My head felt tingly. I was smart to get out of their when I did.
Suddenly, I jumped. The door to the cottage had opened. My head poked around the tree. The man was carrying a lantern and the knife. He walk slowly over to the tree I was tied to. After a couple of slow steps, he stopped.
Strength and determination are essential in everyday life. It does matter if you are plotting an escape or cooking a dish with a suspicious amount of basil. You still need both.
