31. 'Unfair'

*Qin Shan POV

After Song Meng dropped me off at the dorm, I run over to my bed and collapse into it. I can't believe that we are together now. It feels unreal that this event has happened. However, Huan comes out of the bathroom and my smile fades. She looks devastated.

"HuanHuan, what happened?" I ask her softly and she looks up. Her eyes are puffy and she is trembling slightly.

"Its nothing... did something happen between you and Song Meng?" She inquires directing the question back at me.

"We are dating now." I frown at her. Something is really off about the normal, happy-go-lucky Huan I know.

"What happened?" I repeat myself and she comes to sit beside me.

"I confessed to Wu He." She murmurs and I take a sharp inhale. If Wu He hurt HuanHuan, I wouldn't be able to ignore it.

"And..." I coax her on a little bit and she leans on my shoulder.

"I gave him a card and didn't stick for his reaction. After class, he came up to me and straight up rejected me. It hurt a lot and I don't know why." She shrugs like she is trying to ignore what happened and I get miffed.

To me it seemed like HuanHuan and Wu He were basically made for each other. I don't believe that Wu He would straight up reject Huan like this. I reach for my phone but HuanHuan grabs my wrist.

"please..don't." Her voice is almost a whisper and I nod, relaxing my hand. Instead, I go up and grab a pint of icecream from the mini-freezer, get two spoons and hand one to HuanHuan.

We eat in silence for a few minutes before she just shuts her eyes and goes to sleep on my loft.

"Good night HuanHuan" I whisper and I leave to the bathroom where I text Song Meng if something had happened between his best friend and Huan.

He takes a long time to respond.

"What happened?" He directs the question back at me and I know that he is hiding something. Before I can, angrily, reply, another response comes.

"I'll ask and get back to you tomorrow. Have a good rest tonight Ms. Girlfriend." My cheeks flush and all my anger is forgotten. Hearing that word coming from him makes my heart flutter and anger disappear into the air.

I send him an emoticon and reply "Good night Mr. Boyfriend :)" before shutting off my phone and exiting the bathroom. Seeing HuanHuan still curled up on my bed, I cover her with the quilt and head to her bed. It is so unfair that while today was one of the happiest in my life, she experienced her first heartache.

---The Next Morning---

I almost run to first class seeking answers, any information that could help lead me to what happened that made Huan so decrepit and weak.

Song Meng is waiting at the door and he smiles, dazing me.

"can you not do that." I mutter when I get near him and he turns his head, perplexed.

"Do what?" He asks with a little bit of mischief in his voice. This boy clearly doesn't know the effect he has on me.

"Smile like that. I think I lost my mind for a fat second there." I lower my voice, I little bit embarrased to admit that I, Qin Shan, will be one of the girls so smitten over their boyfriends.

"Okay. I'm sorry." Song Meng looks at me and raises his eyebrows, his smile changes into a more laughable one and I return it.

"Let us go inside then." I say and take his hand, pulling him into the interior of the classroom.

As we take our seats, I prepare myself to give him the interrogation over what happened between HuanHuan and Wu He but he beats me to it.

"As you probably know, your friend confessed to Wu He and he rejected her." Song Meng's voice is calm but he refuses to look at me. He is definitely hiding something.

"What a shame, HuanHuan was so devastated. She cried for three hours before falling asleep on my bed." I exaggerate a bit just to see if I can make him tell me everything. It works.

"He likes her." Song Meng's voice drops to a whisper as he admits this fact and my eyes open wide.

"Why did he reject her then if he likes her? Why didn''t he just confess too? They are so perfect together I don't understand...mmm" Song Meng cuts me off by putting his hand over my lips. His fingers are cold and feel soothing.

"Wu He did not have a choice. That is all I can say." He looks down guiltily and I believe him. Maybe there is some taboo about Wu He and Huan... then again, wouldn't there be the same for us.

"Then...then what about us." I almost whisper it to Song Meng and he opens his clear eyes, staring into me.

"I don't want to let you go, but, if you feel obligated to leave, you can." His answer is so vague and it makes me uncomfortable. I decide to drop the subject as the teacher comes in and begins todays lecture.

The silence persists and becomes awkward between us. Several times I glance over at Song Meng who seems whole-heartedly focused on writing notes on his paper. His fist is clenched slightly so I know that this is just a facade.

As the lecture finishes I whisper into his ear.

"We will talk about this later. Have a good day Mr. Boyfriend." He smiles at me and then nods in agreement.

We hold hands as we walk out the door and towards reality.
