"You are mistaken." Fei looked at Carol with her arms straightened at her sides.
"Miss Carol is not my master. Only young master Carlos is. I suggest Miss Carol apologize to him for your unseemly behavior earlier. It doesn't matter who you are, if you disrespect, curse, or harm Master, I will not show mercy," Fei continued, with her expression unchanging as she disregarded Clare's increasingly twisted one.
She had no good impression of this second miss of the Rochesters. This had been the second time that Fei caught her blatantly disrespecting her esteemed master.
The first time was when Carlos first returned from camp, when Carol had continuously teased him. However, as her master did not dwell on the matter, Fei decided to forgive her for her mistake.
However, it seemed like the second miss had not learned from her past errors.
Carol roared with laughter. "You? Show mercy? Say that to my father! What makes you think you can even get to that stage? Carlos is MY brother, and I get to decide how my relationship with him goes."
"And I am his bodyguard, in charge of protecting him against danger, including possible danger."
Seeing how the mutant still hadn't shown any waves of emotion on her face, the young lady gritted her teeth and decided to go a bit further. "You are just a servant, albeit simply stronger than most servants. In fact, you aren't even worthy of the term; you are just a tamed monster."
As she continued on to the last line, her expression flickered before returning to a face filled with condescension and disgust.
Without waiting for a response this time, Carol walked away with massive strides of absolute confidence, her stylish black boots clunking against the marble floor.
As the steps grew fainter with each second, the rest of the tense corridor gradually eased up.
However, no one spoke still.
The crowd looked at the bodyguard with pity and scorn, waiting for her reaction.
Hearing those words, Fei could not help but feel a piercing pain in her chest.
This was definitely not the first time she had been insulted, but Carol's words had a different quality to those other insults.
She lowered her head. To the surrounding servants, she seemed to be tacitly acknowledging the validity of the second missus' words.
She was just a servant, a tool that could be easily disposed of, a tamed monster who has no race.
Fei trembled as she continued to contemplate. She wasn't human.
She would never have the family that she yearned for. Mutants didn't have a family. That was something that she had previously ignored on a subconscious level.
In addition, she would never have a closer bond to her master than that of a faithful servant.
The mutant thought back to how Carlos had treated her today. He had no care for her feelings, no care for her beliefs. He had only remembered her presence when he felt like he was in danger.
Though he had said they were friends, he would rather play with this 'Marcus' he met on the internet rather than her.
Was Eyrie, the person who had reached out to her in the name of wanting to be friends, the same?
Was it that she took pity on her that the eldest miss decided to allow her to eat and sit with the rest of the Rochester family?
Is there any other reason to show such kindness to a mutant?
All of a sudden, Fei felt a twinge of nausea hit her.
Why was she thinking so much, anyway? There is no point.
From the very start, you had vowed to protect your master as his humble servant. You did not wish for anything more than that.
So why do you feel so disappointed when you realize that you are in the exact position you wished for? Fei asked herself.
Was it because of the emotions?
She wasn't even human, so why did she have these sensations in the first place?
I need to bury them; Fei had a ridiculous yet not so ridiculous thought.
Emotions once again terrified her.
She was changing into a person she did not want to be due to this extra baggage known as emotion.
And her conclusion was once again: bury these feelings. Ignore them.
Determined in her goals, Fei woke up from her thoughts and glanced at the video game console and headset that had fallen to the ground from her master's tantrum.
Her eyes softened.
It didn't matter what happened, master will always be master, and she will always be by his side as his bodyguard.
Fei silently picked up Carlos' possessions and placed them back in place, ignoring the judgmental stares of the crowd. She soundlessly bowed to the other servants and left in the same direction that her master had gone in.
The atmosphere exploded with noise at once, people discussing the scene they had witnessed.
That maid, she was a MONSTER? What did Miss Carol mean?
– These were the questions they asked each other. However, no one could answer with the truth. As such, everyone began to speculate terrifying fantasies in their heads.
Soon though, before anything could get out of hand, the new head maid arrived and shouted for the noise to cease.
