Katsuki frowned as she ate her cutesy ice cream, trying to remember when she had snuck it into the basket. They had stopped at a picnic table in the park, sitting across from each other with the grocery bags next to them. The second he had put one of the bags down, she had pulled out the frozen treat like she had a honing device on the damn thing.
As if she could sense his confusion, the little menace just looked up at him and grinned broadly, ice cream still on her lips. His eyes were drawn to them, and suddenly warm, Katsuki looked away as he took off his jacket. Coughing, he broke the silence. "So why's Captain America here anyway?"
He felt a little bad as her smile faltered, especially since today was the most flustered he's gotten her since before Hosu. But like hell he's going to wait until their next argument to find out about her this time. She seemed to agree with this line of thought, her eyebrows furrowing into a surprisingly concentrated expression for an adult eating a children's treat. Finally, she hummed in satisfaction as she took another bite and answered.
"Honestly, I'm not super sure. The I-Island expo isn't until after finals, and even then he usually doesn't attend after his fall out with one of the scientists that All Might worked with. My best bet is that he's trying to do PR after the Stain video Kaminari showed us leaked."
Katsuki frowned as he remembered Stain's speech. "Your dad is the fake who chases after petty dreams or somethin', right?"
Star looked like she wanted to tell him he was wrong, but she hesitated. "My dad is a lot of things. He's a hero. He's strong, charismatic. People love him in America. To them, he's perfect." She took another bite of her ice cream. "To me he was perfect."
"Tch, that media clown?"
She looked up at him sharply and he scowled, but held his tongue in case she stopped talking. This was the first time he was hearing something about her past directly from her without yelling involved, he realized. If he was literally ever honest with himself, he would admit that it made him feel pretty damn good.
She smiled briefly before speaking, and he doused his train of thought in case she was listening. "I, um... I got a letter about a year ago. It was obviously from someone close to my dad since they knew his quirk details, and how to get the letter past him. It also had too much personal information about me to ignore. So when it mentioned that I would find out more in Japan, I hopped on a plane and told my family that I wanted to train under the Ojiro's more." Star glanced at him, deciding to leave out the details of the letter. If she told him the letter mentioned her scars, not only would she have to explain THAT, but he might also notice the scar from the party.
"That's why I kept the news about my abduction from getting out." She continued. "So far all I know is that he had some shady business partners here in Japan. I haven't found out who sent the letter or what they wanted me to know. So I can't risk him bringing me home yet."
Katsuki couldn't hold it any longer when he heard the last part, standing up abruptly. "Home? As in leave UA?"
Her eyes hardened a bit. "I'm not leaving without a fight. I'm here to make sure no one goes through what Hitoshi and I did… or for as long as we did."
Her expression suddenly shifted as she beamed at him. "I'm going to rescue people like you rescued me from Stain. And I'm going to look even cooler doing it." She grinned, finishing her ice cream with a shiver. Why did she think eating ice cream at night was a good idea?
Katsuki scoffed, feeling his face get warm at the idea of her looking up to him. Just remembering the look on her face when he found her in the alley was enough to make his neck heat up as well. Damn it.
"Yeah whatever, even if you do become a rescue hero, you'll never look as cool as me." He scoffed, secretly liking that she had a passion for a branch of hero that went well with his own.
She shivered slightly again, but stood up and leaned forward with a shit eating grin on her face. "Are you... blushin-"
Katsuki quickly threw his jacket at her face before she could finish her sentence, watching her struggle with it in amusement while he picked up the grocery bags.
"Tch, in your dreams. And don't get any of that cold shit on my jacket, got it?"
She finally got it on and picked up the last bag, flushing again as she became flustered. "Er-"
Katsuki let out a bark of a laugh as he looked at her. She frowned as he continued laughing, touching her face to make sure there wasn't any ice cream left on it. What was so stinking funny?!
Letting out one last chuckle, he started walking away. He snickered again at how big the jacket was on her, and as she hurried to catch up, he let himself imagine her as a penguin waddling after him. Just like he had hoped, she let out an angry noise, confirming she had been using her quirk.
He smirked. Too easy.
